Hello! We seem to have a few new additions to this forum from the wind tunnels of Lethbridge and area. So, if anyone wants to start with an opening suggestion for a preferred restaurant/coffee shop and a meeting time, this is the thread to do it!

I have some ideas of places, like Penny Coffee House, Round Street Cafe, Jasmine Room, Lethbridge Public Library, College or University library. At about 6 or 7PM, what do people think? If we can decide on a place (oo, I forgot Starbucks in Chapters) then we can meet starting next week!

I think Round St is out of the question. Don't they close around 6 on weekdays, 5 on Saturday? I know they have limited hours, I work just down the street.

I personally love the Penny, the pasta salad there is amazing... not that we're there to eat, but you know... haha! I've never been to the Jasmine Room. There are some nice group study rooms in the UofL library, where you don't have to be perfectly quiet. I think a more social atmosphere would be better for the first meeting, have a little fun before the work begins.

Denny's is opened 24 hours for some write-through-the-nights. I love the Penny too, they make the best coffee in Lethbridge. Jasmine closes really early, too, about six, I believe.

I love the penny, or the MochaCabanna, but like you said Dennys is 24 hours. Are there dates that work for people for a pre-nano meeting, or a week one meeting?

Hmm, I work full-time during the day, go to school part-time at night and I have a friend visiting from BC early next week before all the NaNo fun begins. I might not be able to meet before Nov 1st, unless it's Sunday. I am up for writing anywhere though; a social atmosphere is also a good idea. I tend to go to bed between 10 and midnight weeknights, so I won't be up for late night writing sessions unless they're on weekends. I have classes Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Floor hockey Fridays. I'm thinking people should decide what they want to do without me and then I will show up when I can, that may be the easiest.

The people have spoken! From the sounds of it, I think the best option here is 7:00 PM at Denny's on Saturday, Nov. 3. Come one, come all.

  • When you enter, say that you're with "the novel-writing group", so that the staff will be able to guide everyone to the same table. If you bring your writing equipment or a toy dinosaur, that's usually a pretty good indicator of a writer at work, too.
  • You don't have to order a meal, but keep the "minimum purchase" in mind, just to keep the staff from getting grumpy.
  • There are usually a few electrical outlets available for laptops, but ask first, and bring a power bar, so that other people can use the outlet, too.
  • Bringing a non-writing friend is fine. Bringing a writing friend is even better -- it won't be too late to sign up.
  • Are you guys familiar with word wars? It's very simple: if you feel you've been chatting for too long, just call out for a word war. Everybody puts their head down and writes as much as they can for ten minutes. When the ten minutes are up, compare totals and see how well everybody did. You'd be surprised how effective they can be!

There's no trick to it -- just have fun, and show some support for your fellow writers. Enjoy!

Tonight isn't so good for me either and seeing as how there seems to be only four of us, I guess we should figure something else out. For me, I do my writing at home, so regardless of where we meet up, I'm there more to socialize than to write, though I probably would bring a pen and paper because talking with people always starts new ideas for writing.

I just went out to dinner last night to Plum, which is absolutely AMAZING, though a touch pricey (like $25 for an entree), though we could just get some tasty desert. I was thinking we should have a more casual intimate setting to just talk about things and eat some good food, because I love food, haha. It's a really friendly, small place with comfortable chairs and low lighting, and it's fairly new in town. Later at night it dies down quite a bit, around 10 o'clock there's only a few tables with people.

DaniRae, I read your blog about you giving up on NaNo, but still wanting to write everyday. Having done this for a few years, you really do start believing the "No Plot, No Problem!" mentality, so if you want to meet up and hash out some ideas, it's not to late to pump out 50 000 words, I once did 10 000 in a day!

    Just my thoughts!

So I was sitting in Denny's in Lethbridge, 7 on the clock, with my little dinosaur, book, pen and hot chocolate, wondering where everyone was at. Round 8:30, nice little server told me looks like I got stood up. I didn't know there was only 4 of us in Lethy. So when's the next meeting? I got a good chunk of writing done even if it was a little quiet.

Eek, I work worried something like that would happen! I'm sorry I couldn't make it!

I work this Saturday coming, but I could meet up afterwards, sometime after 6, even if it's just me and someone else.

I'll be there, too, and I'm looking forward to meeting everybody!

If anybody living between Medicine Hat and Lethbridge want to carpool, let me know. Just be aware that I might want to check out the "Toys R Us" before we leave. : )

    7 o'clock on Saturday, where?

I will have to eat wherever we go (since I work during the day), so I'd prefer not Denny's, my experience at the one in Lethbridge has never been good. I stayed at the Sandman once too, and found a half drank case of Lucky beer under the bathroom sink, and an open soap in the tub. Eek.

What are people in the mood for?

    All right, here we go:

    Saturday! 7:00PM!

Now, it won't have the classiest food, but when I think of creativity, my mind always wanders back to the Smitty's I used to haunt with my friends in high school. So, if no one minds indulging my nostalgia...

Smitty's Pancake House: 2053 Mayor Magrath Drive South.

I'll be there a bit beforehand (18h45), with a laptop, a pair of Wrimosaurs, and a handful of NaNoWriMo stickers! I hope to see everyone there!

I may or may not show up. I'd like to meet others for sure, but my schedule is always such a mess. Also, i'd have to taxi it, since the buses (as you probably know) kind of suck on weekends, and i'm not entirely sure how to get there by bus from where I am anyway.

Hopefully you guys won't mind a slacker like me showing up though. I completely forgot my novel for like, a week. :P
