Hey Haligonians!!
The details have been set for our Kick-Off!!
Date: Thursday, Nov 1
Time: 5pm - 8pm
Venue: Paperchase Cafe
Activities!
Eye of Argon reading!
Continuing the Adventures of Little Tommy!
AND WORD WARS!! Bring your pens and papers, or your laptops........
And presenting for the first time ever...
Halifax's NANOWRIMO WORD WAR TOURNAMENT!!
But Jhaaaaa, what IS a word war??
Word wars are short spans of times, ranging from 5 to twenty minutes, for concentrated writing. It's easier to accomplish than sitting at the computer for hours on end, and we generally count the number of words we've written in that short period of time. The person with the highest number wins the word war and we do it all over again.
SIGN UP IN THIS THREAD IF YOU ARE INTERESTED!
State your weapon of choice (pen/paper or laptop) so I can pair you off properly!
I'll look forward to seeing you at this prestigious event or else relish calling you various names designed to tease and malign your name in a most mild manner!!
Copy-paste this and add your name if you're coming!

All right! I was so hoping for a write-in kick-off. It'll be so much fun!
I won't try the word wars. I doubt I'd get very far. But I'm totally coming and I know I'll be bringing at least one person! I keep trying to sucker in my friends from work....

I'm so happy that the date chosen was when I can be there -- I shall certainly be in attendance!
As for the word wars -- bring it on -- I'll be using paper and pen -- but maybe we can have a John Henry type competition of some sort between Man (me) and Machine (whoever wants to subject their laptop to EXTREME ABUSE...) --
All the best! I can't wait! Maybe I'll get beyond 7K this time around...

So, I've come to the realization that there is NO way I am going to be able to handle NaNo this year... but I think I'm just going to set some sort of personal, reasonable goal and go for that. I'll probably be there on Thursday, but I'm not going to commit to word wars.

Count me in, friends! November 1 works well for me; I can go there straight from work and begin my first journey. :D
I'll be writing my novel on Google Docs so that I can work on it from any given internet-enabled computer, but that would require me to purchase three hours of computer time, money more wisely spent on caffeine and brownies. I'll probably pop into Loomis down the street and bring a notebook to write in; I don't handwrite very often, but I enjoy it whenever I do (I'm slow as all hell at handwriting, though. :P)

Hi,
I am Dana, otherwise known as "scribblesthecat".
I am new to Nano this year. I have been writing for a while but I am stuck in Short Story Land so I thought I should give this a try. I am sure I have a novel in there somewhere.
Plus, we just moved here (about two years ago) and I was told that I would have to take up a hobby such as knitting or sewing to while away the winter months and all I have to show for it is three asymmetrical doggy blankets and a couple of cat toys.
I was all psyched up to sit in front of the computer on November 1 and work on my "I am such a serious writer. Leave me alone...." attitude, but Word Wars and coffee sound like much more fun. I will likely bring my laptop although I am not sure how trusty my battery is. Maybe I will bring some paper for back up. I won't be able to read what I wrote but I can probably still count the number of words. ( :

Welcome Dana!!
I spoke to Aisha (Paperchase proprietor) this morning... she's going to let us have the back couches and arrange it into a small cosy circle for us! Not only that, we'll have two actual tables for the Word War Tournament for you guys to write on properly so you don't have to scribble on your lap.
There will be much candy to be had.
I've got a few prizes for the winners of the Word War Tournament, and those who place tops will get to choose their NaNo swag first!!
Yay!!

Ok, I'm not sure what time I'll be able to sneak in or out, so I think I'll step down from the word war this time around. Damned work! Why must I need money so badly? *laughs*
