To the best of my ability, I will summarize my plot and try to make it make sense at the same time. -takes a deep breath-

Saffron was created in a lab along with twelve other genetically-enhanced humans. She, unlike the others, was raised like a normal human child for the first few years of her life. Her "Mother" and "Father" pretended that the gifts she developed as a result of her creation were normal. She was never told about the other twelve being tested in the Lab. When she was around eight, her "Father", supposedly under the orders of the lab, tattooed a Power Ring (an elaborate circle used to amplify magic) to her back. Her "Mother", who is not a member of the lab staff, discovered this right after "Father" finished. When she heard what the ring would be used for, "Mother" panicked and killed "Father", then did her best to corrupt the circle. Realising the full extent of the danger the child she had grown to love was in, "Mother" took Saffron and her biological child away, changed their name, and started fresh as a secretary for the country's Dictator.

10-12 years pass.

Saffron has been trained as a Sniper/Body Guard who currently works for the current Dictator, son of the Dictator that was in power when she and her "family" came to the city. She discovers, through a bit of spying, that the Dictator is one of the Twelve other children: the first, eldest, and possibly the most dangerous. She also uncovers that he is planning on either getting her back into the group, or having her shot under the excuse that she had done so in protecting him from a Sniper.

Thoroughly panicked, she leaves the city with her foster brother and his best friend. The trio meets up with a pack of In-Humans and one of them, who was used by the lab to compare growth between In-Humans and their creations, joins them to get revenge for what was done. The rest of the story is spent finding out more about the Lab, the other Twelve, and how to stop them/save her own neck.

So, I want to know would the be considered Fantasy or Sci-fi since it is set in the future? And can you think of anything to help improve the plot?

I actually think it sounds good! But I'm leaning towards sci-fi on this one. : ) it's got that distopia feeling that I love as well *_* Go with it!

Sci Fi here mate... and not just because of the set in the future part but more the geneticially engineered bit :)

I would class Duine as very much sci fi and that has magic in it as well so i think your sci fi elements out weigh the fantasy elements :)

i do like the story tho :) good luck with it

I'm not going to even bother reading your post. You can read this and decide for yourself. The difference is thus:

Science fiction deals with our universe and the laws of physics as we currently understand them at the time that the story is written. There may be speculation about what new rules we may discover and how we might bend those rules, but it's still grounded in the knowledge we have today. Science fiction tends to address issues regarding technology and the current or future development thereof, and especially the effect of that development on mankind.

Fantasy, however, uses an alternative universe as a setting in which the laws of physics in our universe do not fully apply. In general, the difference is as simple as adding one or more systems of magic. In the past, the story tended to take place on a world with levels of technology similar to those that existed in medieval England and France. These days, that's not necessarily the case, and fantasy can take place in settings similar to the modern world (see: Harry Potter for a wildly popular example).

Fantasy can also be written in futuristic settings. I love to take Star Wars as an example. Science fiction? Hell no. There are some elements of space opera, but overall, Star Wars is straight space fantasy. The Force is just magic. Lightsabers are swords. Kenobi is the wise old wizard mentor. It takes place in the distant past. And so forth.

Sounds like science fantasy to me, unless you describe the "magic" scientifically as some means of psionics or the like, in which case it's pretty much science fiction. But it sounds more like science fantasy to me.
