Okay, I've been writing, off and on, for most of my life, and I've gotten to the point where I like a little . . . okay, a lot of mixing in my stories. I don't stick to any one genre. Which makes most of my stories a bit complicated.

Fantasy and Science Fiction are largely setting based and are mirror images of each other, though not incompatible. (A bit like Female and Male, actually.)

Mystery is a plot, Horror could be either.

For crying out loud, I once read a fantasy novel that was nothing more than a monster slasher flick with all the settings changed.

I've got a story idea that I'm going to use for this unholy project and it's complicated in the extreme, so where should I take it?

It's a fantasy world that's grown up, time it about Gothic Victorian England, sorta. There's a missing person that was almost a murder and it's being investigated by a guy who mixes science and magic, sorta kinda, with a distinct flair all his own. There's religious nuts on both ends of the spectrum and there's an ongoing argument about the historicity of legends and myths. Combine it all with artifacts that might or might not be fakes and a society of people who live outside the normal rules of reality and things are going to get a bit nutty.

The Mainstream description said that it might contain aspects of several of the others, and that's what I'm seeing.

Sounds like a lot of the science fiction I've read recently.

From what I understand, mainstream fiction doesn't really fit into any ONE category... the sci-fi / hacker / fantasy ... I would've put that under horror because it's mostly horror... I'm writing something sort of inspirational, but it's ficition... with lots of comedy relief, but... it's not comedy and it's not religious ... so i chose mainstream fiction for my genre.

Make sense??

It sounds like YOUR plot might be more fantasy... since it's set in an alternate reality? Sort of like "The Golden Compass" by Pullman. I've read a lot of fantasy that doesn't have very many "fantastical characters" but it's still an alternate reality. But you can still write under mainstream fiction if you want. it's covered.
