This thread is for people from the Arlington Writers Group. The author search function is down so I thought if people post here we can add each other to our buddy list.

If you post, your username will reaveal your profile. If you want it more private, you can PM me. But, I'm a very public person, so I am lettin myself hang out.

I hope everyone else takes the plunge.

Also, we should post our signatures, that function is down too. But aparently, mine will show up because this is the first post.

Wierd.

Yay, I found it!! OMG this was difficult to find. This site is not too user friendly and doesn't really allow us to search for individual users. Frustrating!

Oh well. We're here. We'll be writing. And maybe we can discuss it at our meetings!

I hit 2254 words tonight and don't know how to update my wordcount. Some of the user-unfriendliness is due to traffic. Maybe I'll figure it out tomorrow. I donated to the site, hoping they would use the money to buy more bandwidth.

Anyway, some people are meeting at Ballston Mall on Saturdays. I'm able to meet weekends or M, W, or F in the evening. I'll probably be skipping the B&N most of this month, just because the anthology does not affect me and I'll need the time. However, if people will be writing there, it's as good a place as any to meet.

I got the wordcount on three Diet Dr. Peppers. I weaned myself down to Fresca as the night wore on, but I'm still wired. Yeah. Tomorrow should be interesting.

Figured it out. It's under Edit Writer Profile. Hardly intuitive, since we'll be editing out wordcounts about daily, our profiles probably once. Still, I've got the finger and thumb on my forehead.

What the hell is going on with the mailing list?

Still wired,

Add me onto the list, please. :) I'd try to figure it out, but I need to run to work. Still, nearly 700 words in the last half hour or so that I took out of getting ready... and hopefully the next thousand or more tonight. Yay!

I haven't been in your group before, but I'd be up for some weeknight write-ins.

I wrote 575 words before I got ready for work and another 165 on the subway going to work, leaving around 930 words for tonight. This may not sound like a lot to some of you, but for me it's damn near a miracle!

Hi Kali, Gail,

Not sure if you're interested, but if you have the time, you might want to swing by our Meetup group:

http://writers.meetup.com/499/

We get together every Wednesday (or, at least, most every Wednesday) at the Barnes & Noble in Clarendon, and I suspect that we'll be devoting at least one meeting to doing a write-in sort of thing.

Good luck!

Wow, I found you guys. ..You usually find me under the meetup for the writers group under a different name but just wanted to let you know I am going by Lady Leuedaei ( a penname I really like) for the NaNoWriMo contest. . .I may keep the name longer as I really like it.

Now the really important stuff. ..I'll try to be at the meeting at Ballasten Common Mall on Saturday. I'm new to this contest as well as the group and a whole lot nervous about it all but well, as my father said. . ."if you don't try you'll never know if you could've done it or not". So as Yoda says. .."do, don't try" ! Please add me to your buddy list so I can figure this whole thing out. ..not as user friendly as I'd hoped.

Hi there!
I've been a lurker of Arlington Writers Group for a while, so I'm very excited that our paths are crossing with your participation in NaNoWriMo.

I haven't attended one of your meetings yet, because I spent August & September outlining and researching my book, and then I started writing it on Oct. 1. So that makes me either an unofficial participant in NaNoWriMo or a cheater, which ever way we want to look at it. ;-)

My manuscript is currently 40,000 words, and I hope to finish out NaNoWriMo between 80,000 and 100,000 words. The work is pretty intense! But I'm having a great time.

Barb, in answer to your query about posting the word count, go to EDIT PROFILE, chose the AUTHOR STATS tab and scroll down until you see the Word Count field. I guess at some point there will be a word count applet on this site, but for now, that seems the be the way to enter this info.

I added Morgaine84 to my buddy list.

But there is also someone else who added me as a buddy and I have no idea who it is because the notifications of buddies disappeared from my profile.

Can whoever it is please PM me so I know who you are.

Thanks.

And maybe we should all PM each other if we are going to add people as buddies. You can only add one at a time.

This is my first NaNoWriMo, so I have no idea what's going on, I'm just using it as a good excuse to get some writing done. I've got 1500 words down now, gonna try and get some more done tonight.

Well, I made it too!

First day done with 1,964 words. I'll try to figure out how to add all of you to my buddy list. This isn't an all too intuitive site.

Oh man, I can't believe I'm actually writing that old-school science fiction novel that I hope is inside of me. Space station, aliens, robots, trade alliances, war, love, sex ... oh yeah, space sex at that!

Ya gotta love it!

OK, I want to add you guys to my Buddy list but I don't know who anyone is other than Wtchkng and Barb2874.

I take it that Jeff is Jeff (I'm brilliant, aren't I?).

Maybe we can ID ourselves on the Arlington Writers board.

Oh yeah, my most creative handle is rayanderson. I'm really ... uh ...

Do we still say "handle" or am I in the wrong generation?

Thanks Colleen!

And by the way, I loved Mists of Avalon. It's currently at my Mom's in Texas (with about 2/3 or my book collection) and I've been thinking about pulling it back out the next time I'm there.

See you Wednesday!

Is it okay to show up at B&N to write? I don't know if it would be rude to ignore the proceedings and spend time at a writing group actuially writing.

Eric,

Of course you can show up and write. This week might be kind of boring for you. We are putting together a book which is a collection of our writings over the past year and today is the last planning session before we give it to the people who are preparing it for publication. So, none of us will be writing at the meeting this week. But feel free to come and write, write, write.

I know we have talked about dedicating at least one of our meetings to the nanowrimo this month and it may include people sitting around writing. You should check out our site for the schedule.

Here's a shout out to all the Arlington Meetup Writing Group writers. SHOUT OUT!!! I'm glad we have this thread to communicate. I plan to go to Busboys and Poets in Shirlington at 10am on Saturday morning and write until at least 2pm. Feel free to join me. It's good to be back in the group.

Peace Out,

Gayle

Hey Gayle,

I may join you at some point this weekend. I know that I have absolutely, positively no plans this weekend other than to write. And maybe do some stuff around the house. I want to see how much progress I can make tonight writing. But if I get stuck in laundry mode in the am, I may just write from home.

Glad you're back in the group!

One thing I learned this weekend that is not conducive to writing is being at a woodland retreat...with friends...and alcohol...did I mention alcohol?

On an unrelated topic, there is somethign I've been wondering about the timing of this project/contest/literary death march: did the organizers of NaNowriMo (all praises be upon them) chose November to make this more like an obstacle course? I mean, Thanksgiving is going to be a big black hole for anyone trying to participate (unless your idea of Thanksgiving is sitting alone in your basement with a plate of turkey loaf and the new issue of Guns and Ammo). If they did this in April, for example, we would have the whole Arbor Day thing to work around...but that would probably be more manageable.

Is it obvious I am desperately trying to avoid starting up my day at work?

Anyway, good luck to you all over the next few days.

Jeff,
Chris Baty says in his nanowrimo book "No Plot? No Problem!, that he chose November because the weather sucks and he felt people would have more indoor time. (I'm paraphrasing here a little) The first one was done in the spring and the outdoor temptations were great.

I tend to agree with him. Regarding Thanksgiving, except for possibly the day itself, I plan to crank hard. I've put friends and family on notice---don't mess with me until I finish this book. The only exceptions are my granddaughters.

You're cranking the words out. Good for you.

Oh and about woodland retreats and booze, well I think you learned first hand the disadvantages of this kind of writing scenerio.

How in the world can travel and booze not be conducive to writing? You just set up your computer so you fall toward your keyboard, not backward into the chair. Read some Hunter S. Thompson. Better yet, don't read anything and keep writing. Beware the tryptophan in the bird tomorrow. Everything else if full of carbs, so you should be well-loaded. Everyone else will be sleepy and watching foot ball.

Above all things, write, you infidels, write.

Erich
