If you want some company while you're writing, post it here (the earlier you post, the more people can plan--but you knew that). Directions or phone numbers to the locations appreciated, along with how fellow WriMos can recognize you. A surprising number of people in coffeeshops look like aspiring novelists!

For sure:
Thursday mornings 6am-8:45am
Java Station

Maybe:
Any weekday mornings 6am-7:45am
Java Station

Gotta love that place :)

Mornings at Java Station sound good to me whenever I can wake up early enuff. Today was not one of those days - I went to the Tegan & Sara concert last night so I woke up at 7:45 :)

Also I'd be up for heading down to Coffee Cat or the IV Java Jones again, probably on weekends.

I personally can't do mornings on anything but weekends, but then no one wants to get up that early on weekends. And even then, I would only be able to go if it's nearby. Unless i ask my roommate ahead of time if I can use her car (I hate not having a car ;;;; ) I can get to ones in IV easily (since I can pretty much walk or bike there). If we hear from more kids on campus then we'll be sure to announce any ideas that we come up with for something near for us~

Does this apply to Thanksgiving weekend? Anyone have any write-ins planned during that time?

How about an all-day write-in on the day after Thanksgiving? Not sure where...

I think I'll wander into coffee shops Tuesday-Thursday this week after work (~5:30-6 till sometime later), trading off between Java Station (Tues/Thursday?) and IV Java Jones (Wednesday?) , the ?'s depending on what other people are up to/for...

(I'm so far having problems with mornings... heck, writing in general. ;) Probably not gonna make 50k this year - hoping for 20-30.)

Hi, Chad.

I enjoyed renewing our past NaNo acquaintance at the PM kickoff party last Thursday!

If you want to write solitary, that's cool, but if you want company and/or camaraderie, I suggest pinning down your locations and approximate times. I've found that it works best to state a specific time and wait for someone to say "Hey, that doesn't work for me, but if it were at X time I could make it," then work out any changes. Also, how someone can recognize you is always good--either that you'll notify the counter person, or that you'll have something large and distinctive with you ("will have laptop and look like I'm writing" doesn't do it, around UCSB--I've had trouble recognizing people there even when given a piece of information that DOESN'T apply to 90% of the people at the location). Your out-of-home writing programs sounds more ambitious than most; good for you!

By the way, folks, the forums and site in general seem to have speeded up considerably. I gave up a few times in the past several days and decided my comments weren't worth waiting however long it would take to get access. Now that we're speeded up again, I hope to see more posts and make more of my own.

This Thursday at Java Station from 6am to 8:30-8:45am.
I'll be there with a silver laptop and a brightly colored polo. I shouldn't be too hard to spot - I'm 16, so I'll be the youngest person there :)

Thanks for posting these upcoming write-ins!

Your fine Municipal Liaison (that would be me) will try to attend some or most of these events, but time's tight and my back has been acting up severely, making seating almost anywhere a challenge for me. I may stop by just to drop off stickers and stuff for Chad to hand out, write a few hundred words, and split. Any event host who wants to pick up stuff from me (current stickers, previous years' stickers, lapel/backback pins), I can make arrangements.

Writing can be much more fun and much easier with company. If you prefer more writing/less talking or vice versa, you probably can find a group that's good for you. Try some out and see what happens! If you're the host and you want to state a preference, that's cool too. (If you haven't figured it out, pretty much anything is cool with me if it involves you in SOMETHING connected with your fine novel-to-be, even if it's only thinking about it or talking about it.)

Long's has a great Halloween candy sale, so I overstocked and probably will bring some to events that I attend, not that any of us needs it ...

Note on Java Station: Coffee is $1.25 self-serve if you bring your own cup, and they've never complained about my 20-oz one from another coffee shop. Several selections of flavors on self-serve, including one or more decaf.

Note on "event" entries: I used to be able to do "recurring" entries (so that they'd come up every Thursday, or every day, or whatever it was) in the calendar. If you think an entry will be recurring and you want it posted on the calendar each time, let me know. The calendar erases events after they've passed, so you can't refer back to old listings (but may be able to refer to old forum postings).

Happy writing, all! Caffeine is good fuel for the writing soul . . .

Hey, Chad and everyone,

I am indeed getting a break from my regular Thursday night meeting this week, so I'm coming to Java Station tomorrow night! Woohoo! I have other errands to do, so I may or may not be able to get there right at 5:00, but I'll be there as close to 5 as I can.

Hey, folks. Glad to see the postings, and I hope people have been showing up. I'm going to try and make the Thursday p.m. and possibly a.m. (p.m. is more likely, unless I wake up early and feel like writing and having someone else's coffee instead of my own).

In answer to Megan's post on the Event for Nov. 15:

I think I have more temporary tattoos (same ones as last year), some older years' stickers, and this year's stickers (I lobbied for pens or pencils, but I lost out ...). I've been giving out the first two of the four designs, but given that we're up to mid-month, I may give out the first three and hang onto the last one to give out during the last week or 10 days or so.

Events: Feel free to propose! The competition with Oshkosh seems to be pretty popular, so I hope I can get that up and running. I've been deluged with work and with doctor appointments (including TWO sleep studies this month--the first indicated sleep apnea, so I'm having another to see if the apnea can be treated in the conventional manner--and physical therapy twice a week for an hour at a time). I DO, however, want everyone to have a happy and active NaNo experience, so continue to prompt and suggest!

Hi all. I'm meeting every weekday morning at Muddy Waters on Haley St. from 8:30 until around 10:00.
Melody, Jennifer and Christine usually join me. The more the merrier.
Marcy

[Writerdude notes that this is a re-post from the "Muddy Waters" forum; I wanted everyone to see this one because it's such a great group. Watch for a really intent but mildly talkative and certainly friendly group of 20ish to 50ish people, mostly women, probably 3-5 or so of them if the group is similar to last year. I think I'm being generous on 20ish and don't mean to offend with 50ish.]

Aw... I'd like to do the Muddy Waters meetups but I have to work and there's no way I can make it from/back to Goleta quickly enough, alas. If there was a weekend one I'd go!

I'll do Java Station on Thursday night... I might wind up leaving about 6:30 or so, however.

I'm planning on getting some writing done downtown at the Coffee Cat this Sunday. I'll probably just head over there after church (so about 10:15) and hang out until about one. If anyone wants to come join me, that would be fun!

Great, glad to see another event!

Thursday, 11/15: I expect to be at Java Station right around 5, probably for an hour or so--my back is acting up, and sometimes I can't tolerate their furniture.

I'm going to try to swing a food and drink discount for the group, so if you order anything, ask for it. Tonight I'll be in the 2003 black NaNoWriMo shirt, pretty noticeable. The chartreuse one was just too much for me to take today ...

If you're on the frugal side, very often coffee shops will grant discounts, especially if you phone in advance. Tell them you're hosting a writing group and ask what they can do for you. I think I got 25% on drinks and 10% on food at Java Station last year. Hey, the saving can make it easier to tip generously!

I'm up for something this weekend (Thanksgiving). I can meet Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and I can stray from Muddy Waters. Goleta Coffee? someplace else that has comfy couches and plugs?
Downtown, uptown, midtown, Montecito. I'll go anywhere just let me know.

I will probably do Muddy Waters friday morning unless I hear otherwise.
We can do it!!!!

I oughta be able to make it to Muddy Waters on friday.

I'm also planning to go to Java Station again at least on Monday next week, probably from 5-7 again.

Muddy Waters is closed on Friday. Jennifer and I are going to meet at java jones at 10:15 on Saturday. I'll have her post which one.

I can go to Java Station on Friday morning. I've never been there. 10:00?

Good luck with the plans! I don't know if I'll be able to do any write-ins this weekend. Part depends on where I am Thursday and Friday, part depends on what else I discover that I need to get done this weekend, and part depends on keeping headaches and backaches at bay. Today's pretty good, thank goodness!

So what about the weekend challenge? Keep it internal, or do you have a nemesis to which we should issue a challenge?

Shucks... the one weekday morning I can make it to Muddy Waters and they're closed. ;P

But yeah - 10AM Friday at Java Station works for me!

Congrats on the seriously high word count, Marcy/Serendipity! Chad, you'll also recognize her by look of serious determination about her writing--but looks like she's having fun with it.

I'm awake too early (up at 2:00 a.m. for a while, then at 5 or so when my wife's alarm went off to go shopping, then REALLY up for good at 6:30), so I may stop in at least to drop off current stickers for you two hosts of the event, maybe for some writing if I'm sick of working--but I have a desperate client who REALLY wants his work done today, and I was trying to have it done Wednesday and failed. Prepaid clients at somewhat ridiculous hourly rates really do have to take priority until I'm sure I can finish the work.

Good luck to both! And I see NO posts on the weekend challenge--just no fun without out-of-city competitors? The event seemed to be popular in years past, but then the message boards as a whole have been much quieter this year, even with 50-100% more participants (YES, we finally topped 200!--but that was with reclaiming the Lompoc/Santa Ynez Valley stretch because the ML had different things to do this year).

ANYONE: Any idea why the boards are so inactive and what I, as ML, can do to help you all keep interested and active?

I think a lot of it had to do with the boards being basically down the first few days. That was a bit of a momentum killer!

Thanks AJ. Chad and I had a very productive write-in. I have the end in sight and am now determined to finish by Sunday, I think it's doable if I can keep up today's rate.

I agree with Chad, I think the slowness of the first week have kept some people away. I only recently came back and found some threads that I can relate to.

Still don't know where we're meeting tomorrow. I'm waiting to hear from jennifer (aka Megan Kent)

Well, I know you have the ability to email all people registered in our region. Maybe folks who aren't reading the boards would be take action if something showed up in their inbox.

I would be happy to work with you to plan an event mid-week, if you'd like.
