I don't know if everyone knows this or not but Seattle traditionally kicks our butt in wordcount. This cannot stand. We're Californians. We survive fires, earthquakes, floods, landslides, riots and traffic on the 405! Yeah, that's right, I said "the 405" cause we put a "the" before our freeways! (Did you know other places don't? What's that about? We drive on the 5... not I-5.)
As it stands, Seattle is beating us!
Seattle: 3,214,742
LA: 2,860,057
That's 354,000+ words. Cue overdramatic: Noooooooooooooo. But we can rally and destroy Seattle with a flood of words, right? I do believe it's on, so let's bring it.

Okay Snail,
Where're you getting your stats? Direct me to the link please!
My Buddy djdd is in Seattle and I've warned her about the LA invasion.
I'm exhausted from carrying the heavy bags under my eyes and was going to skip the writing tonight but now you've made me MAD! So looks like I'm going to burn the midnight oil again.
Thanks for consuming my precious time!

Hi Hannah, the best way to see Seattle's word count is to look at your friend's profile and then click on their "nano stats." Don't worry, I didn't know how to do it either. Gategrrl taught me!
Everybody write!

Are. You. Serious? Is that widget right? Seattle is beating us by almost a million words! Whaaaaaaaaaaat? How can a city where the writers call themselves ducks write so much? My mind is blown.
ZOMG people, this isn't a word war, it's a word massacre.

Why do we have to come in second every year? I'm getting a second city complex. Or middle child syndrome or something... it's like Jan Brady swallowed L.A. We have to do something!
Well, it's not over yet.
It's not over.

Next time pick a city that has a 90% illiterate population with a total population of 100.
Thanks for the aggravation.

Well... I did say Seattle traditionally kicks our butt every year. This year I guess they also decided to give us wedgies and cut in front of us in line and push us into the dirt and make fun of us in every way.
I only hope this motivates us to put down our cell phones, get out of our cars, stop blogging and write?

classy response, dream!
we have fun here in LA, and we don't get easily insulted by the obvious cracks at our expense. we don't pretend to be snobs, or know the right coffee, but contrary to popular thought, we do read on occasion and even more than that, we can TALK. oooh, baby, can we talk!
but we call it schmooooozing. X

This made me laugh. I am a first-timer, and didn't know about the quantity war. Are we sure we want to engage in this? Witness McDonald's: how many trillion of those salty, gooey cookies they call hamburgers sold? Doesn't mean they're good, does it? However, I agree that we should strive and prevail. Just putting "the" in front of the names of the freeways gives us plenty of extra words. Good luck to all!

Personally, being originally from Brooklyn and a Yankees fan, I'm satisfied as long as we can keep kicking Boston's ass. Or is it asses? Either way, how can we expect to beat a bunch of people so hopped up on caffeine all of the time. I think it's even added to their water supply like fluoride is. Besides, what else are they supposed to do but write when it's nearly always coudy and or raining up there? I'll gladly trade a few words for a few hundred days of sunshine and nice weather. Remember, as Albert Hammond once sang, it never rains in Southern California; so screw those twitchy, wet shutins, we've got sunshine on our shoulders and 80 degree Thanksgiving weather. Whoo hoo!!! :-)

Great Caesar's ghost! I mean this in the nicest possible way but where is everyone? Can I hope for a forth week rally? I mean, we're looking pretty skunked at the moment but I still have hope that we can close the gap... forge ahead. Plan a stealth snipe and outrageously beat Seattle at the last minute?
(Okay, I know that it's a long shot but if there's one thing I've learned from Hollywood: Never give up! Never surrender!)

Although it's not over, kudos to the Seattle region for really cranking out those words.
Kudos to all of us for doing such an awesome job.
We're in fifth place on the scoreboard and Chicago is on our booty. They are surging right now and are about to overtake us, so let's do our best to stay in fifth place!

Argh, I'm getting there, but it's going to be a real slog to get through 7.5K words in one day. Got 5K to go. Off to write now.
Go, LA!

I'm doing the same thing. Just hit 45,033! Have done 4000 plus or minus so far today with that 5K to go. For some reason it is not "like butter" as said by Chris Baty. It is sheer willpower and prayer. I like my story; I just seem to have lazy and slow moving characters or characters so involved in plotting and strategizing that they haven't let me in on their secrets yet. It is fun. But I am tired. Once again, on my mark, get set, go 5K more, Lady!

Well, I know the majority of posters kinda drift off and away after November (I do too) but I just wanted to put our final score out here.
12,681,017 Words! 5th place out of all regions.
We didn't win but I think that's still an amazing amount of writing for one month! Seriously, 12 million words! That's brilliant! Amazing! Go LA! Hopefully, I'll see everyone next year!
