Well, kept missing days (and days!) and thinking i would catch it up on the weekend or whatever and obviously didn't. Who thinks I should keep going, given that have no hope of getting anywhere near the target? Is there any glory in keeping going even if you know it's hopeless? Sigh....................................And I was going so well for a day or two there.

There is more glory in dying in a lost bottle than in running away, but that doesn't mean it is the right choice...

I am almost exactly in your position (about 3K words on the 12th). I have a large family, a heavily pregnant wife and two jobs. Finding time and energy and inspiration to write is not so simple. I also had 4 nights out in the first week, and daytime writing (even on the weekend) is pretty much a non-event.

Last night, I sat down, worked out which days I have available and divided up my remaining words over those days (nights, really).

Comes down to 3.5K a night on those nights.

I'm really not sure I can even do that once, let alone 14 times. But I'm going to have a go, even if I die trying!!

(PS if you don't mind I'm going to "buddy" you so I can keep an eye on our relative totals, we'll see who goes under first!)

Shayne, I dont even have good excuses like you. I think it was because my outline was so vague, has just made me a bit disheartened and so havent tried as hard as I could have. Loss of confidence, you know.

But I think I will feel too crummy if I give up altogether, so, yes, perhaps I will even just try to get to 20000 - at least that will be something.

The thing is that Im using all the same old excuses for not writing - which is kind of the point with this - to get away from doing that!

So, yes, I will press on. Good luck to you as well!

No way to give up! You are a writer, and writers don't give up, they may die with a pen in their hand, but they do NOT give up. You will be finr once you get over this speed hump that is in your pathway.

Do not give up. Your new baby will be so excited to hear what you were doing while she/he was growing away inside your wife. Just dont go out so often, just stay home in the evenings with you wife and baby and write write write. Go for it.

Well said. Having just watched "Quills" I know what you mean (Involves writing on the wall with a certain brown substance in the absence of ink - now that's a writer).

Thanks for the encouragement, asilalenore

I think you should keep going. If you don't get there this year, you know what? There's always next year.

Nope. Writers don't give up, otherwise we'd have nothing to read but Corn Flake packets.

As to the vague outline, I started Nano without one, still haven't got one. What I did have was a character. That was it. Once I concentrated on the character, I let them tell the story and slowly, the word count rose - okay, it rose faster than 'slowly', but I let them tell the tale and it has been one amazing journey.

Focus on what you have, steep yourself in the world you've created and then let rip with your fingers on the keyboard.

Nope, no giving up. You may not reach the 50k, but half a book written when all around goes to hell is better than stopping right now and wondering how much you could have accomplished in the time left.
