Dear fellow writers,

I'm writing a novel about the rise and fall of a female media tycoon. As part of her global expansion strategy, she teams up with a Chinese media organisation and sets up a big financial news network in Africa (ca. 2015). This really takes off when Africa becomes one of the hottest emerging markets and everyone wants to invest there.
I've already posted a message on the South African message board asking for advice on the technical aspects of such a project - unfortunately, I'm not an expert on Africa. I'm also wondering about some China-related issues (the venture is not absolutely central to the plot but I'd still like to get it right):
1. China has been really active in Africa recently, but most investors seem to concentrate on engineering, construction, infrastructure. Is there any investment at all in African media, financial services, banking, internet communities?
2. Is there any Chinese media organisation (Xinhua or Hong Kong-based media) that invests in other countries? I guess Xinhua is unlikely to invest abroad for political reasons, but how about Hong Kong-based media?
3. Is there any existing media tycoon in China (mainland or Hong Kong) who could hypothetically be up for that kind of speculative venture? Someone I could read up on to get some more ideas for the characters in my novel?
Thank you so much for your help!!! Most grateful for any advice.
Karla
