http://www.sfwa.org/writing/ - This links to a resouce page in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America site. There are a number of articles listed concerning all aspects of the art of writing including manuscript preparation and critiquing. Definitely worth a look.

http://www.writingworld.com - This site looks a little cheesy but the articles are well written. Everything from advice for beginners to genre-specific information.

http://www.writersdigest.com/101sites/2007_index.asp?goto=closead - This is a link to a master list of web sites that Writer's Digest has put together as being the top 101 sites for writers. There are also links to other sites under the Writer's Digest umbrella.

Feel free to post any useful sites you find here.

www.writing-world.com - just a bunch of different articles about writing and such. I've found it to be rather useful :)

www.creativewritingprompts.com - 302 different writing prompts. I think these may change every once in a very great while, but I don't really know?

I second the Writer's Digest link... I also like the Writer's Digest writing prompts. I have the page in my bookmarks, they're updated every week I believe... but I'm not on my laptop right now so I can't find it!! :/

This is a really good thread idea!

Just a note: the link for Writing World is the one with the hyphen: www.writing-world.com. The one without the hyphen: www.writingworld.com, will take you to a different, but excellent website, for the Gotham Writers' Workshop. Both are worth bookmarking. The Gotham Writers' Workshop can also be found at www.writingclasses.com, if that's less confusing.

Here are a few links to workshops on editing and rewriting. They were written either by me or by Holly Lisle

Workshop: Rewriting the Beast (Lazette Gifford)
http://fmwriters.com/Visionback/Issue17/workshop.htm

Workshop: Resurrecting Old Stories (Lazette Gifford)
http://fmwriters.com/Visionback/Issue19/workshop.htm

Workshop: Reworking Info Dumps (Lazette Gifford)
http://fmwriters.com/Visionback/Vision38/Workshop.htm

Workshop: Burn it, Bury it, or Let it Live (Holly Lisle)
http://fmwriters.com/Visionback/issue7/workshop.htm

Workshop: One Pass Manuscript Revision (Holly Lisle)
http://fmwriters.com/Visionback/Issue9/Workshop.htm

Always remember that while something may work great for one person, it will not always work for another. I cannot do Holly's One Pass style, but others have found it a great help.

Vision has other articles that might help. This year's plan -- as we draw closer to 50 issues -- is to rework the back issues into something a little easier to deal with so people can find material there. Back issues can be found here: http://fmwriters.com/Visionback/Index.htm

The current issue is here: http://lazette.net/vision/

I hope you find things that help! That's the whole purpose of Vision!

And here is a site that is dedicated to helping people achieve professional publication. We welcome anyone who is interested in writing better, but the focus is toward publication. We do not allow any fanfiction or discussions on self-publishing. We have over 12,000 registered members, with about 4,000 active each month. There are many boards dedicated to various types of writing, private critique groups (and anyone is welcome to start such a group), monthly challenges, marathons, and more.

I am also about to post the notice for the next Two Year Novel Course (the writing of which, at least partly) falls during NaNo each year, so people can use that to get their book off to a good start. The course goes from initial idea to submission, with a class posted every week. This will be the fifth group to start.

Like everything else on the site, it's free.

http://www.sfwa.org/writing/turkeycity.html - The main site is listed in the posting above, but I wanted to draw particular attention to this. It's a list of cliched or awkward traps writers fall into, e.g. overuse of said synonyms, blatant infodumping, contrived plotting. Some of the stuff only applies to speculative fiction, but a lot of it is general and would be useful things for any writer to watch out for as they edit.

http://www.writers.net/ - General information on writing and publishing. It seems like their sections on agents and publishing are pretty good, especially because you can search for agents who work in a particular genre. The only thing to watch out for is that, since agents list themselves on the site, not all of them are necessarily trustworthy. There are also a number of articles about different aspects of publishing.

http://www.pw.org/ - General information on writing and publishing-- I haven't looked much into this one, but it seems to be pretty thorough.

http://www.aar-online.org/mc/page.do - The Association of Authors' Representatives; you can search the database for different agents.

This is probably the most expansive sites that I've found and just follow any of the links at the top of the page. Everythings organized alphabetically too so things are fairly easy to find.
