I am going to write about Paris in the late nineteenth century. I had sort of assumed it would be similar to writing about New York City or London from the same time period (which I am more familiar with), but I realized there might be differences, so I have a few questions. For starters...

Was there any kind of child labor in Paris at this time, as there was in the United States? What kind of job could a minor expect to get in Paris? Did they have newsboys?

While I don't have any specific research to back this up, I have been to Paris and learned a bit of the history. I can totally see children doing some form of work in the poorer parts of the city - definitely begging. Possibly orphans working in churches performing altar boy duties among others. Lots of industry in Paris so factory work would not be out of the question, I'm sure.
