I'm thinking about my next NaNo project (or just thinking in general), and I was thinking how interesting it would be to collect a bunch of essays answering the question: "How many people do you have to sleep with before you can be labeled a slut? Is it different for men/women, gay/straight? What role does age play?" If anyone can give my input on this, I'd appreciate it.

I asked a similar question in this same thread, and I was surprised by the answers. My FMC is in her mid-thirties and inexperienced. I asked the collective brain how many lovers she'd think was average? Answers ranged mostly from "even one is too many before you're married" to "2 or 3." And this was in the "Erotica" thread, so I was really surprised.
I grew up in the swinging 60s when we had the Pill and no AIDS, and my answer would have been way higher. Way higher. I mean WAAAAY higher. As in "When you say 2 or 3, are you talking about how many at one time, or how many per day?" So maybe I'm not the best one to ask...

I don't think number has anything to do with it.
----------If someone wants to have a lot of one night stands, chat up, or be chatted up and have some kind of connection, I don't think that's slutty.
However if she were to walk into a bar, announce loudly that she was easy and horny, and didn't care who she slept with, then I'd consider that slutty.
My take on it is if there is an emotional connection, even if it's for one night, then that's fine. It's it's just random sex, whoever, however, then that's slutty. I think a good start would be at least knowing your partners name before you sleep with them.

The question isn't how many...the question is how the rumors work.
For instance, one of the MC's in Jay Asher's Thirt3en Reasons Why was a girl who was a virgin, and yet thanks to a rumor started when she was fourteen she was branded as the school slut by senior year. And still a virgin.
Rumors just flat suck, and often have nothing to do with the reality. So that's one route.
