[STICKY] The All-Ireland Word War (Rules & Sign-ups)

For the past couple of years, we've run an All-Ireland Word War, which pits province against province (plus Dublin as its own group because there's so many of them).

And despite the fact that Onyva has helped Connaught to a storming win both times, we're going to have another go this year at boosting people's word counts with a bit of healthy and friendly competition - and perhaps this year another group can win... (Well, we can dream.)

The rules are pretty simple - in fact, even simpler this year than in the past.

To take part, reply to this topic or send me a NaNoMail declaring your interest and stating which group (Connaught, Leinster, Munster, Ulster or Dublin) you want your word count to contribute to. You don't have to sign up for the province you live in; it can be the one you're originally from. But you'd probably want to have some sort of connection, else why bother?
Unlike in previous years, the cut-off date for sign-ups isn't till November 23rd (it's been more like the 5th before).

During November, update your word count at least every other day. Anyone who doesn't update for more than 4 days on the trot, or else warn me that they won't be updating, gets dropped from their group.

I'll log everyone's word counts every 2 days, starting on the 6th - usually about 10pm. I'll then do some quick maths (or get my spreadsheet to do it) and post up the averages for each group (i.e. total word count divided by number of signed-up participants).
In the last week - from the 24th onwards - I'll take word counts every day.

The winning group is the one with the highest average word count by midnight on November 30th. An honourable mention also goes to the group with the highest percentage of people reaching 50K or more. And of course, we cheer everyone who passes the 50K post as it happens!

Also in the past, we've had separate topics/threads for sign-ups, results and chat, all of which have been locked after a certain point except for the chat one. But this year I can't be bothered with all that, although the leader board will have its own topic - have your say wherever you please! :)
Regional Word War Leader Table Update

Hi,

Thought I'd start a new thread for posting when updates have taken place as it's easier to just cross-post across all the participating forums.

The results from the 4th November have been calculated and can be found here:

If anyone sees any mistakes (and there were several in the last one) please PM me to let me know. :)
Online chat and word sprints

There's a chat room in existence for the use of all WriMos in Ireland.
http://writers.sharp-words.co.uk/chat-room/

You do need to register (for the chat room, not for the website unless you want to post comments on the site), but it's relatively painless.

There's also a timer which can be used for word sprints - for example, set it to 10 minutes and see how much you can write! You can have word wars with other chat room occupants using this timer too (although nothing is automated, alas).

I'll personally be in the chat room every evening when I'm home (and weekend days too) if anyone has any pressing questions (and the site's playing up), and to take part in general chat and word sprints as well!
Radio interviews

Hi
My name is Jenni Duggan - I am a journalist with RTE and am interested in doing a radio report about NaNoWriMo. I did take part myself a couple of years ago (didn't quiet reach the word count though!). I think it is a great idea and am also hoping to try my hand again this year.
I would love to interview a few people for my radio report and would really appreciate it if anyone would be interested in talking to me. I am hoping to interview a couple of people who have done this before and someone who is totally new to the NaNoWriMo experience.
If anyone would be interested in being interviewed they can send me a message here or email me on jenniduggan@gmail.com
thanks!

Ask your questions about Dublin here, don't be shy

Various people have asked questions about Ireland, or about Dublin specifically, on the Plot Realism forum, and invariably someone (often me) sends them to the Dublin forum.

No one seems to have turned up, so I'm opening this thread to anyone who needs answers. Ask away, lads.
My MC has tickets for the Late Late Show!

Does anyone know what the procedure is if you are in the audience? If so I'd really appreciate your help with this!

Questions that come to mind are the following
What time do you have to be there?
Where do you meet up? Is there a bar or a reception committee?
What happens in the commercial breaks?
Does everyone go home immediately after or is there mingling?
I'm thinking that my FMC might win a prize, say a holiday. What would the lead time on actually receiving the prize be? Would it be a voucher or actual tickets for a given date?
Is there anything else i should know?

Thank you so much in advance,
Kind regards,
First Sentence

For those who have started writing, what is your first sentence?

Mine:

My name is ____.

I haven't decided on a name yet. Technically I haven't even finished the first sentence. Not very creative. Probably will change it at some stage. But getting the name in early is important to the novel. Gonna go off now and procrastinate on baby name websites lol.
Irish :)

How are you using Irish / Ireland in your story? Or are you using it at all? Why or why not?

Any classic figures like banshees or leprechauns? Or in the typical Irish films about Ireland including the IRA and major historical events? Or a Ross O' Caroll-Kelly rip-off? How about Irish sports? Or just phrases - you wouldn't put on the kettle would ya? - feck me the remote! - etc. Modern Ireland?

I'd really like to include the Burren into my story. It's such a great landscape and could work really well as plot device and just to ground the story and ensure it doesn't just take place in a nondescript vacum located somewhere. I haven't been there since I was really young and my main memory is wanting a pen in the gift shop, so I must revisit or make up the details a lot to use it. But I've set my heart on it for some unknown reason.

One of the ideas I'm considering is someone coming up with a new novel way to promote Irish and the madness that ensures due to it. Ideally it would be written in Irish, but that's just not going to happen. I don't have all the details ironed out, but say it's set in a Gaelteacht, would in just be better to mention that they are really speaking Irish and leave it at that or would it be advisable to throw in cúpla Focal so to speak? It would be grand if it was solely Irish speakers speaking fluently in their natural environment, but I foresee people switching language in mid-word and just generally mangling the language while trying to learn it or maybe a group of people jabbering away and the narrator not understanding a word.

Still on the fence how to make it work. Not even sure if I'll use that idea.

Not about your book per say but more about who you try to be when writing, do you put yourself into each thing that you write or use friends as characters or do you have a list of persona's that you employ instead? Do you keep chapter notes to keep you focused or are you more freehanded with your flow lines and plots? Do you see it as a novel or adaptable as a screenplay as well or are you just trying to get 50K of anything down and use NaNoEdMo to make it make sense? You genre preferences and placements for your writings, time periods, research methods if any, inspiratoins and detractions from your writing process and even what you hope to get out of NaNo aart from sore backs and masseusse bills for fixing your wrists back to normal.

I had not seen anything like this on the board but of there is please pardon my eejitness and foolishness in not researching enough.

I call upon all Irish teens to help me in my quest for... stuff

It's gotten to that point in my Nano where I'm stockpiling buddies to validate me and my novel, otherwise I may just abandon things.

Again.

And I need an extra special favour from you guys.

I'm trying super-hard to make my YA novel as Irish as possible. I want people to be able to identify with it, y'know? But I seem to be failing miserably.

To make a long story short: Any tips on making a Dublin Young Adult novel TRULY Dublin? Without going too much into the woes of drink and drugs and all of that =P
Word War... vs BUFFALO, NY!

Well well well,

Our little friends from the other side of the pond... Buffalo, NY, has almost unianimously decided to have a Word War against you, whether you like it or not! Due to the fact that we both have A) roughly the same number of participants, B) several Irish folk on our team and C) several bitter Joyce scholars who are seeking revenge outside their jobs! So we are taking it out on you!

Think you can outwrite us before the end of November?? If not, then you shall be donned with the Hubcap of Shame, a humiliating burden of your loss, until next year! Muahahahaha. Let the trash-talking and noveling commence!!
Question for anyone who has previously participated...

Just out of interest; how many words would you say we need to write a day? Is there a guideline or anything? I'm a bit confused about all of this... it's my first year doing NaNo; and my internet keeps breaking so I rarely get a chance to check out the site. Any rough estimates you could provide from past experiences or suchlike would be greatly appreciated.

I'm probably posting this in the wrong place; just tell me and I'll delete it or something. Please, find it in your hearts to go easy on the NaNo newbie if I'm making loads of mistakes... xD
Anyone up for the UK & Ireland Word War?

The subject line basically says it all. :)

For the past couple of years, there's been a Word War between regions in Ireland and the UK (run by someone over in England) - though this has nothing to do with the All-Ireland Word War (run by me, of which more later).
Basically, you sign up for your word count to be counted in your region's total; an average for each region is taken, and a leader board kept up throughout November.
There will be separate 'teams' for the different Ireland regions - Dublin, Elsewhere, Northwest and NI .

Sign-ups aren't happening yet, but Loriba (the organiser) has asked me to sound out if anyone's interested in taking part. If you are, please reply here. You don't have to do anything except update your word count regularly during the month, and hopefully clock up a big one!

[This topic is cross-posted to all the Ireland regions.]
