[STICKY!!] The VERY OFFICIAL Sac Region Write In Thread

Let's keep all of the posts about write-ins in one thread. There's an official SacNano calendar in existence, and Kat and I will do our very best to keep it updated with the write-ins as they're proposed and solidified (once the calendar is embedded somehow in our regional forum), but my poor old addled brain will handle this better if all the write ins are listed in a single thread.

EDIT: I really encourage people to comment here with write-ins. That way I can easily add them to the official calendar so that people can see what's going on when. I'll do my best to glean information from the various threads, but I'm only human, or so my doctors say.
----------
I made a website! http://www.mossroot.com
I published a webzine: http://www.daikaijuzine.com
I did other cool stuff too.

What Happens When You Run Out Of Plot?

Why, you have your character stroll into a bookstore, pick a tome off the shelf and start reading, of course! Said results get transcribed into your documents, and the word count continues.

This is what happens when you only get about 26K of stuff pre-plotted and look at your notes and say, "Okay... now what the hell happens?"

I've been busy, body has been hurting, work stuff, time with wife, insert other excuses here. Time for the gear switch to the LAME COLLEGE MELODRAMA PLOT THREAD.

If you think this is a cheesy tactic, trust me, I've seen a lot worse.
*NEW* Davis Write-in Threads

The original Davis write-in thread has become so big that it is in danger of collapsing under its own weight, plus I got tired of having to plow through to the end.

I had planned to go to Cloud Forest Cafe today at 2 pm, but I have decided that I have too much of a novelling hangover from the Night of Writing Dangerously. Plus, I have to break a cardinal NaNo rule and do some laundry and dishes, since even I'm getting disgusted, and I'm not exactly the neatest person around. :)

Carry on, valiant soldiers for the written word! ;-D
Wrote Dangerously and Survived

To those of you who weren't able to come: you really missed out! It was a lot of fun. Great people, great atmosphere, great costumes. It was my first time meeting Chris Baty -- the man is very nice and very sincere. His speeches were heartfelt and entertaining. And, what's more, we actually got some writing done! One guy actually made 50k while we were there (overachiever). I held myself to a more modest goal of 2,000 there and another 1,000 on the drive back. This writing dangerously shtick really works for me, I think I'm going to attempt it every time I sit down.

Thanks to everyone who went for helping me celebrate my birthday in a truly novel fashion! (In case you didn't catch that, that's a double pun--one for the novelling that happened and one for the costumes. FYI.) And to those who didn't make it, I'm looking forward to partying with you in the years to come!

Happy writing, everyone!
I'm down! Medic! Medic!

Well, it's happened. My body has decided that it does not WANT me doing NaNoWriMo. I have tendonitis...I've had it in the past, and this time it's in my elbows. It's really pretty freaking uncomfortable. I haven't written since last saturday, except what I need to do for work. I keep hoping that lots of ice and heat and ibuprofen and limiting my typing will do the trick, but it hasn't yet. Now I've lost nearly a week of NaNo, with only 18 days left and 37,000 words to go...if I magically became healthy tomorrow I could catch up, but I just don't think it's going to happen.

I'm pretty bummed...I really wanted to win again this year and have a perfect record. However, I will pick away at my book where I can and be that much closer to finishing it when 11/30 comes...and I'll finish it in the next couple of months. It's just not the same, though, you know?

Stupid body.

I think I'm down for the count. Depression has been shelling our fortifications for nigh unto a year now. Uni has come with reinforcements for the enemy troops. My backup has not arrived as the family looks like it may be in cahoots with the Separatist dogs... I so wanted to finish this one and use it as my free proof copy from last year's prize. I just can't see it now. I'm starting chapter 5 of 23. We need med-paks!
Name my Unicorns

I have a pink male unicorn and a younger blue (or maybe green, I haven't decided) female unicorn. But they need names.

And they're hanging out with a pinata an anthropomorphic raccoon. So it doesn't have to be really serious. (But if you do have name suggestions for the pinata or raccoon, let me know, too.)

Thanks, guys. :)
San Francisco Writer's Conference?

Hey, is anyone else planning on going to the writer's conference in San Francisco on the 13-15th of February? I'm going and have my reservations all set up, but I have no idea how I'm getting there. I figure I'm taking the train to... somewhere, and then... something. No idea.

If anyone is going, I'm willing to pitch in money for gas in exchange for a seat in the car. Or if you're also taking the train, we could be traveling companions. That way, if I get horribly lost on the transit system, at least I won't be lost alone.

In an ideal world, I'd like to be there in time to be checked in with stuff dumped in room in time for Chris' NaNoWriMo presentation, so I can represent. Sacramento Region FTW!

I'm putting in a vote for Wednesday or Friday night write-ins (it is selfish, I'm busy Tue and Thu), and/or maybe a Sunday afternoon again? Anyone want to weigh in? As I said in the location thread, I like Crepeville, Stone's and Common Grounds based on last year, but am open to suggestions.

I'm thinking about actually doing some prep this year before trying to pound out a novel . . . :D
[NaNoWriMo HQ] NaNoWriMo's Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon

Hello Sacramento Wrimos,

NaNoWriMo HQ is excited to invite you to our second-annual Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon. Come spend a blissful night of eating, drinking, and novel-writing with 200 Bay Area NaNoWriMo participants and staff!

The event is on Saturday, November 15. This year’s theme: NaNo-Noir. We’ll be summoning the spirits of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett with chiaroscuro lighting, mood-setting background movies, and writing feats more dangerous than falling in love with a femme fatale. Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt, this will be a night you don’t want to miss.

How it Works:

All funds from the Write-a-thon benefit NaNoWriMo's youth and adult programs. To attend, just raise $200 or more in contributions through your easy-to-set-up Write-a-thon Firstgiving page by November 10.

Everyone who comes will get dinner, drinks, caffeine, a funny dinnertime talk by NaNoWriMo Director Chris Baty on 10 Years of NaNoWriMo Craziness, and a special Night of Writing Dangerously tote bag filled with books, writing software, and edible treats. You'll also have a chance to win raffle prizes such as museum passes, yoga classes, movie tickets, spa treatments, bottles of fine wine, and a baseball signed by Judy Blume.

The top three fundraisers will get to choose from special prizes, including a Dell Inspiron laptop, a 32 GB iPod Touch courtesy of Storyist.com, and an AlphaSmart Neo courtesy of Renaissance Learning.

As soon as you raise $200, send me an RSVP. If you raise $300 or more, you can RSVP for a guest as well. The ballroom has limited seating, so please RSVP as soon as possible!

For more information about the event, including photos and video from last years event, and to see a list of all the exciting raffle prizes, visit our Write-a-thon page.

Any questions? Drop me a line.

Hope to see you all there!

Night of Carpooling Dangerously?

Hello all,

I'm going to the Night of Writing Dangerously and I was wondering if there's anyone in the area who wants to carpool. I live in Davis and am willing to drive if anyone is willing to pitch in for gas and parking. Let me know ASAP if you're interested.

Happy writing!
Clearing it up - Leonardo DiCaprio in The Basketball Diaries

Sorry, this will only make sense if you were at the HH (and even then, maybe not).

The movie I was trying to think of was The Basketball Diaries, where Leonardo DiCaprio plays JIM Carroll (not Jon Carroll, but you could see why I was confused), an author, musician and artist whose diary about his life and adolescent heroin addiction was made into the movie by the same name. Light stuff, obviously - although I remember it being a good movie.

Anyhoo . . . cleared that up. Now I have to go find some Jonathan Carroll stuff. Looking at his picture on wikipedia, he looks very familiar, so I've seen him somewhere . . . I guess I couldn't be a true fantasy fiction fan and not recognize him. :)
Tuesday 11/11 Write-In

I can't go to the Halfway Hootenany because it's way out of my way. I was wondering if anyone wanted to write in the Fair Oaks / Citrus Heights / maybe Carmichael area. Probably around 5 pm or so.
----------
Have you heard the news that you're dead?
Spontaneous Write In

I'm going to attempt a long writing day. I'll be heading over to Panera on Howe Avenue by about 9:00 a.m. this morning. I'll probably stay there until 11:30ish when the lunch crowd comes in. If I can still write at that point, I'll just relocated to Tupelo for a couple of hours. Anybody who is free and wants to join me, is welcome. I put my sticker on my laptop, so I should be recognizable.

Feel like killing time and answering some questions?

Hello all,

I'm a first-time NaNoer this year and in addition to a novel I am also writing an article on NaNoWriMo for intended publication in the Sacramento News & Review. I've read articles on NaNoWriMo before, but I don't think most capture the true essence of what it is, what it means to us, and what drives a person to undertake such a quest. I'm trying to bring a little humanity to the article and I was wondering if any of you would be willing to answer some questions about your thoughts and experiences with NaNoWriMo. I'll paste the questions in here, and if you could email your answers to firedragon206@hotmail.com I'd very much appreciate it. Feel free to answer whichever you're comfortable with and let me know if you don't want me to quote you by name in the article.

Thanks everyone, and happy writing!
Ryan Mahan

What is your name/occupation?

How long have you been writing?

What made you want to participate in NaNoWriMo?

How many NaNoWriMos have you participated in?

How many have you won?

What are you writing about this year?

Do you go to write-ins?

Do you think write-ins are beneficial?

How did you hear about NaNoWriMo?

Have you ever had anything published? Has it been anything you’ve written for NaNoWriMo?

What advice would you give to a beginning NaNoer/hopeful author?

What is the best writing advice you’ve been given by someone? Who gave it to you?

How do you pace yourself throughout the month? Do you go for the 1,667 words a day, or do you set higher goals for yourself?

Do you have rewards set up for meeting your daily quota?

What do you plan on doing with your novel after you’ve written it? Are you going to seek publication or hoard it to yourself?

Do you write during the other 11 months of the year?

----------

Dear Zombiegoat,

Must I poke you with a stick?

Have you rolled into a fetal ball, cluthching your outlines and graphs for cold comfort in the face of my spectacular, off the cuff word count?

Sincerely,
Melissa
