Lakewood Writers

Hello Lakewood folk!

We get together every Saturday at the Colorado Mills Borders Cafe in November. Before November... we just kind of tentatively schedule stuff.

RTD writers?

Hey there!

I have a very long commute which is even longer by bus. Normally that would put me off, but I made the committment and bought the regional bus pass and I'm writing as I go!

Are there any other Denver commuting writers?

Clearly this isn't any way to set up a time meet, I just thought we could offer each other moral support.

Write on!

Night of Writing Dangerously Pie

I hope its okay I made a new post, because I didn't want this to get lost in the sea of posts on the official topic. There's a very good chance I will not be there due to unforeseen problems, but I reserved five pies where I work. I was wondering if someone would play courier and take them to the write-in at the tea house? Don't worry about paying for the pies, I'm picking up the bill. I just feel bad promising pie and then backing out.

If someone in the Highlands Ranch area (that's where I work) could help me out, please let me know. Thank you!
NE/Central Denver Write-In: Hooked on Colfax

Is anyone in the Cheesman Park/Glendale/Cherry Creek/Downtown Denver
area interested in a regular write-in at Hooked on Colfax?

DETAILS
------------------------------------------------------------------
Location: Hooked On Colfax, a local coffee shop
3215 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80206

Day of the week: TBA (Probably a week night that isn't Tuesday)

Time: 7 - 10 PM

Format: First 30 mins for socializing, then mostly quiet writing time
---------------------------------------------------------------
If we have 10 people commit, we can reserve the basement area.
There's a small deposit, which I'd be happy to put up. They have free
wi-fi. There is also free street parking along Colfax.

Here's the web site: (well, myspace, that seems to be all they have):
http://www.myspace.com/hookedoncolfax

I'm also up for recommendations of other neat places in that area. I
like the Shoppe, but I think it's kind of small for a write-in.

If you are interested and think you can reasonably commit to coming, please post
here with what weeknights work for you. If we can get at least 10 people in fairly
short order, we have a better chance of getting the night we want reserved!

(Hopefully I remembered all the info I needed to post for hosting a write-in?)
Northglenn/Thornton area write-ins

Awww, my post was one of the ones that fell victim to the server biting the dust.

Anyway, for those in the northerly section of the Denver metro area, we already have some write-ins scheduled! We currently plan to meet on Tuesdays at 7 at the Atlanta Bread Company located at 104th and I-25. The proper address for those who like such things:

351 West 104th Avenue
Northglenn, Colorado 80234

The store closes at 9, I believe, but quite a lot of typing can be done in two hours. We do greet and bid one another goodbye, and have intermittent speaking during, but it is primarily a write-in.

We're also "official" and listed on the Denver area calendar. But if we get a lot of people who hate the time/location, I imagine we could see about changing it, or adding on another. My word count goes up drastically when I'm out of my apartment, so adding more is fine with me. :D

Here's hoping this post will stay on the board!
Really bumming halfway through

Well, today is the 17th....more than halfway through...and i'm about 5,000 words behind and really bumming. I have nothing left to say in my story. i still like the MCs, they just have said it all. I normally have 2 rules for writing. 1) pull out chair. 2) apply butt. and then just stay there till the writing happens. but for some reason, its not working this year. i've hit 50,000 3 years in a row, so this isn't a sophomore slump.

Please share your words of wisdom and little tricks. I can use all the encouragement I can get.

The Colorado Night of Writing Dangerously (NEARLY FULL!)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT 2: WE HAVE INCREASED THE RSVP LIMIT! We can now fit 42 people in here with tables and chairs for all! EVeryone will have to be cosy and share tables, though, no lone writers allowed. And be aware that if you want a soft seat, bring a cushion...we have 27 that can be spared here, but I'm reserving those for older writers and those of us staying all day. I have also added a list for RSVP's at the end of this post that I will update with each new attendee or cancellation, so check it out and make sure you're on there!

Where: Seven Cups teahouse
1882 S Pearl St
Denver, CO, 80210
(Helpful direction notes: We're located in the Old South Pearl Business District, so if you know where Stella's and Sushi Den and those places are, we're a few blocks south of there. Or if you take public transpo, get to the Louisiana Pearl lightrail station and head south on Pearl.Basically, get to where Evans meets Jewell,.

When: Monday November 24th from 10am-10pm
(Why Monday? Because the shop is closed that day, so we get it all to ourselves. Why 10 to 10? Because I'm doing all the opening and closing stuff and so I get to choose >P )

Details: Please bring $10 per person to help pay for the electricity, heat, and renting costs for the day (since we normally use no heat or electricity at all on Mondays while we're closed and because Greg wants to be able to pretend to pay me for running the place for 12 hours) and be prepared to buy some tea and/or snacks while you're here. Also consider bringing a(n optional) donation for the Office of Letter and Light, please!
Seven Cups does have free WiFi and we have tables and chairs for about 30 people, so bring whatever writing materials you need to get your stuff done!
Also bring a sweater or jacket just in case; we'll have the heat cranked but if we get hit with a Thanksgiving snowstorm no one wants to freeze ^_^.

RSVP either in this thread or to me via PM if you please, and hope to see you guys there!

The RSVP List
Denver noveling essentials

So. We're halfway through the month. Halfway through the insanity. And about now, you're probably all running low on steam and going, "WHAT WAS I THINKING? HOW WILL I EVER GET THROUGH THIS? HULK SMASH GRARG!!!"

...well, maybe not that last part.

Anyway, I figured we each have our own tips that help us get through the mid-month NaNo hump of novel death. So let's go on ahead and share!

My noveling essentials:

-Lots and lots and LOTS of tea, specifically puers (for supressing that pesky urge to eat like a normal human being) and Golden Buds (for a caffeine burst like no other!)
-Shawls to keep off the approaching chill
-93.3 to keep me from wanting to smash my computer when I get sick of the same noveling music after several weeks of it
-Fast food menus, for when even the noveling machine needs to eat
-A dictionary, for picking out random words in the hopes that it'll inspire me to use them
-GoogleDocs, for writing while at work
-Cream puffs, both for the sugar rush and because they are satisfying to throw at things in frustration but require minimal clean up!
-My Plot Bunny, for it can save laptops from chai-spill-induced destruction AND provide a handy way to ice my wrist!
South Denver meet-ups and write-ins (UPDATE: THe write-in is set!)

For those of you just checking in on the forums, here are the details thus far for the South Denver NaNo stuff:

What: The South Denver Weekly Meet-up
This is a SOCIAL meet, just so that everyone is aware...some writing may take place and we try to spend at least some time talking about our novels and offering advice to stuck writers and whatnot, but the primary purpose is just to relax, take a small break from NaNo, and bounce around some ideas so that we can get back to our novels afterwards with a fresh perspective!
When: 7:30pm-whenever on Tuesdays (I live within walking distance, ie next door, so I can stay until people stop showing up!)
Where: The Perkins on Colorado Blvd and Buchtel Blvd, just to the south of I-25 across the street from the movie theater and Dave and Buster's. (If you need directions or help getting there via public transpo, let me know!)

What: The South Denver Weekly Write-In
This is the writing-specific meet, not a social meet...some socializing may happen, but please keep it limited since the primary purpose is to write. We'll be having some word wars and informal competitions this year as well, so there may be prizes to be won!
When: 4:00-6:30pm Saturdays (it was going to be Sundays, but most of the places I contacted said Saturdays work better for them, so we've switched)
Where: UPDATE! The Tattered Cover Highlands Ranch is a GO! We're in the conference room.

These are the OFFICIAL meets, but remember to feel free to set up unofficial ones of your own! I might even show up at a few with some extra swag as a thank you ^_^. If you do set up a another meet in the south metro area, be it weekly or just a onetime thing, just post the details here following the above format, and hopefully people will make it!
Beyond NaNo... writing group anyone?

Hello! I'm a published, but just starting out, writer on the eastish side, but with the ability to travel. I've got a small writer's group going currently, but it is mostly based on finding time together to actually write, and social fun. I'd like to start, or join, a more serious critique based group. Preferably on the take it home, written critique, discussion method. One could meet weekly or biweekly, monthly if we have to. I'm not sure in what venue, but I think it shouldn't cost anyone more than the price of a drink or two.

I give extremely good critique, and I'm wiling to teach those who need it the subtle art of tactful truth. The writing group could be part workshop, with a short how-to going on, presented by whoever can come up with one. It could also be partly social, but I am in need of serious mutual feedback, locally. There are many online feedback forums, but I desire friends and companions and writing buddies with actual face to face local interaction!

Check my web page for samples of my writing and an insight into who I am and what I think about. If you're interested in joining me, or having me join you, whichever, please drop a line.

We all write during NaNo. But some of us probably want to make a career out of it--it can't just be me--and we could all use a little support! What do you think? Any takers?

An inspiring story

Hi, Denver Folks:

The award-winning author Kate DiCamillo (Because of Winn Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux) has a brief but WONDERFUL essay on her web site in which she shares her thoughts on becoming a writer. I have it printed out and tacked to the wall above my desk.

I don't know Kate, and I don't work for her agent or publisher--but I really find her words on writing inspiring. Maybe you will, too! Here's the link:

As an annual and faithfully devoted donor to the NaNoWriMo cause, I feel it is my responsibility to make sure all Colorado participants DONATE!!!!

Just $10 bucks is all you gotta do! That's like, two large mochas or something like that. Come on... help the cause. Bring NaNo back next year and build some libraries!

Words run out before the story is finished

Okay folks, I will meet the 50K mark by bedtime tonight - that is if I don't stop too often to clean the floor, do dishes or sort a year's worth of magazines. (Why is it none of these things seem important until it's time for nanowrimo?)

Thing is the words are going to run out before the story does so I'm looking at another week or so of writing after the word count goal is met. Suddenly though it doesn't seem as exciting. Although I'm enthusiastic about finishing this story, I can't guarantee that I will because the motivating factor is gone.

Does anyone else ever have this problem? How do you deal with it?

Introductions!

Hey Denver-metro area WriMos! Introduce yourself here with as much or as little detail as you'd like.

This is my 5th year doing NaNo. I write SF and Fantasy. This year I'm writing a SF novel that features vampires and pirates...IN SPACE!! I'm also traveling to NaNo headquarters in San Francisco to participate in the Night of Writing Dangerously fundraising write-a-thon. I'm twittering my NaNo progress for the first time this year (@spleenical).

I was in grad school last year for my first year of doing NaNo in Denver, so I didn't make it to many events, but now I'm all graduated and am looking forward to hanging out with the local WriMos more this year. I'm in the borderlands between Denver and Aurora, and will try to travel all over Denver to meetups in the different "quadrants."

Also, here's a pretty good map of the cities that make up the Denver-Metro area for anyone new to Denver and curious about where everyone else is located:
Weekly stats!

All right, guys, we're into the second week of NaNo by a couple of days now, so I went on ahead and checked up on everyone's progress out of curiousity.

And. Wow.

So far, we have two Denver WriMos who have broken 50K and seven others who have broken 30K within the first week! I tried to see who all was past 25K, but I lost count....yeah, it was a lot. By comparison, Boulder has one who has broken 50K and five others who are past 25K, four of whom have broken 30K.

So seriously good work, you guys! It looks like most of you are either on track, very close to being on track, or well, well, well beyond where you need to be by day 10. Keep up the awesome job!

Just wondered if there is anyone else in my community out there nanoing this year. I'll be writing a cheesy lesbian romance novel LOL. You can answer private message if you don't want to be publically outed and I'll not name names. Just wondered and thought we could share stories. I'm a 43 year old femme lesbian, if that helps get things started....

I can has laminating?

I posted this over at dennanos.org, but I thought I'd put it here, too. I realized recently that I have a laminator here at work, and that I could very well use it to laminate stuff! ... for NaNo, I mean. I've got a "Novelists At Work" sign for the Lakewood folks, and a number of table tents. If you want something done, let me know! I'll print it and laminate it soon as I get a chance. :)
Auraria writers!

So...if I recall, last year there were quite a few of us around the Auraria campus at various points in time, trying and often failing to meet up and have on-campus write-ins. And, well, this is my last semester there (I'd be all woeful about this, but I am SO FLIPPING READY TO GET DONE WITH THIS USELESS TIME-CONSUMING DEGREE), so I figure this is my last chance to see if we can fix this problem and really set up an Auraria write-in group during NaNo.

I've contacted the campus library and the Tivoli about a space to write that is open to all the students on campus and is somewhat centrally located, since getting around campus was half the problem last year (when one write-in is going on on the north end of campus and people are in class on the far south end or vice versa, it's hard to get to where you want to be!), and both have been willing to set aside some space for us for an "official" write-it once a week. With the Tivoli it'd basically just be giving us permission to hijack part of one of the lounges without being kicked out for being loud and a boosted WiFi signal during the write-in time, whereas with the library we'd get an official location with lots of outlets or a power strip, but near-silence would of course be required. I'm thinking Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday in the afternoon at some point for a couple of hours...how does that sound for people? And which location would you prefer so I can get back to my contacts ASAP?
Northeast Suburbs Meet-up?

I live in one of the house farms in northern Commerce City (almost in Brighton it's so far north), right by Reunion. If any of you live in or know the area, you know there are a frightful number of houses and yet very little in the way of stores and cafes nearby. While I have enjoyed the two meet-ups I've gone to that are about a half hour's drive away from the old homestead, I was wondering if there was anyone else who is stuck in this housing gulag who would like an occasional meet-up that is a little closer to where we live.

I propose Heidi's Brooklyn Deli in the Prairie Center Parkway, with the caveat that I haven't spoken to them yet, as I wanted to see if there was any interest in this location before I did. Here's the address in case you want to map it and see where it is:

2239 Prairie Center Pkwy
Brighton, CO 80601
Ph 720 685 1610

I have a three year old and can only do meetups later on weekday evenings with the possibility of sometime on the weekend, although that is more difficult. So if I was organizing it, it would probably have to take place at or just after 7:00 on one of the weekday nights, when my husband can be home to watch our girl.

So let me know if there's any interest. If there is, I'll look into it. Thanks!
