Page 100

Okay it's that time again - my 100th page coincided with about 28k words, which is roughly where you need to be today if you want to stay on a 50k pace! I'm trying for a 100k pace, which means I am behind by about 6k, but anyway...

If you want, post the first paragraph on your 100th page so we can all get another little taste of each other's writing. My page 100 doesn't really have a good paragraph, just a bunch of dialog, so I'll just post some of that:

Quote:

“So you thought the laser communication would work?” Lon was saying to Marc Nelson.

“I didn’t know. That’s why I asked you to bring in one of your optical communications engineers.”

“Right, well, I don’t see any change.” The two of them were watching, on Lon’s wall screen, a live image of the artifact – well, somewhat more than a second old, actually, since the light took that long to reach the Earth.

“Neither do I,” said Nelson. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean it didn’t work.”

“So what did the optical guy say about it, anyway?”

“It wasn’t a guy, it was a girl. Ling something. You should keep track of your employees, you know?”

“Right, okay,” said Lon, irritated. “So...?”

“So she just confirmed that our laser had successfully made contact with the artifact. We know it because she detected the bounced beam coming back to us. Much attenuated and widened by the distance, but it was clearly our beam. Confirming, by the way, that the object is indeed orbiting the L5 point.”

“Fine, but then why isn’t it answering?”

“Quite likely it doesn’t know our language, Lon. How would you expect it to answer?”

“Well, it could at least send back an acknowledgement.”

“Maybe it doesn’t have lasers among its repertoire of equipment.”

Again, the idea is to encourage everyone to actually write their 100th page in order to post something from it. So reply here with your excerpt and we'll know you're on track. Hope everyone's having fun and the stories are going well!
Page 50

Okay folks,

Here's an idea that I thought might be fun: If you want, post the first paragraph that appears on page 50 of your story.

This will give all of us in the region a small taste of what others are writing, and of course the catch is that you have to have written 50 pages to participate, so maybe this will motivate all of us to reach that point!

In my case, page 50 occurs at almost 14K words. Coincidentally, we ought to have passed this point yesterday in order to be on a 50K pace for the month!

Here's my paragraph:

Zang was given credit for the discovery, and it was named “2009 FZ”, following the scheme for the provisional designation of asteroids – in this case, it identified the object as having been the 25th asteroid discovered in the second half of March. Even though everyone was pretty sure it wasn’t, in fact, an asteroid, there was no naming convention for alien artifacts. Presumably it would be renamed after further research revealed the true nature of the artifact. Or, more likely, the whole concept of naming would go out the window in this particular case.

As you can see, mine reads like some kind of bizarre textbook, so no one should worry if their paragraph doesn't exactly shine with brilliance, okay? It's understood that this is just first draft text. Anyone else care to participate?

I'm just about to pass 25,000 words! Can any of you veterans speak to whether it gets any easier? My brain feels like mush, and I can feel the loosely held together threads unraveling. Is my story making sense anymore? Should it? Does it matter? I can't tell. I've never been this far along before. The experience of being unable to go back and read through from the beginning, without setting aside a considerable amount of time, is a bit unnerving. I want to go back and read what's written, but know I shouldn't.

Anyhow,

Happy Writing
Write In Schedule

Since I'm not a moderator, I can't make stickies and such, but I thought i'd post this so we don't have to pour through posts to find it.

And it's keeping me from doing any real writing....I have 5 whole words.

Anyway.....based on what I see write now (get it, 'WRITE' now)

We have two on 11/11 in roughly the same area:

1. Panara in CityPlace
2. Starbuck's on Southern in the Costco Plaza (just west of 441)

11/15:

1. Panara on PGA Blvd in the Gardens.

Times are approximately evening (6ish, 7ish)

Hi, All:

It's from 5-7 (or until they close @ 8), at the corner of Linton & Federal. Plenty of outlets, and I'll have my surge strip, so we can all plug in.

Just got my Nano shirt in, so I'll be sitting there wearing it. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

First Write-In!

Hey folks! It seems our fearless and fabulous leader of years past has gone missing this November. I've put off posting in the hope that she'd appear, but alas...

It's great to see that so many people are jonesing for a write-in. I don't want the new members to miss out on the fun or the venting or the words accumulated during our dedicated writing time. Besides, I won't get anything written if I stay home all month.

So our first write-in is scheduled for Thursday (11/6), 7-9PM, at Barnes & Noble in Boca. It's just east of I-95 on Glades, and we'll meet in the cafe. We'll schedule future write-ins in other parts of the county. Cyberbunny--longtime NaNo-er & hardcore write-in participant--will be available next week, and I suspect she'll be scheduling for the Wellington/Royal Palm/ surrounding areas.

Whether you're cranking along or haven't started writing, we're the folks to meet. It's rare that anyone is farther behind than I am. You'll find me in the cafe on Thursday, wearing this year's brown NaNo shirt. (If you haven't seen it, the back looks like a sports jersey--'NANOWRIMO' and '10' on it.

If you're planning to attend, please post here or send me a quick NaNo message/mail thang.

Happy writing!

a tale of two regions

Hey folks,

Sometime last year I proposed a friendly word count competition ("word war" sounds so violent, you know?) between our region and Ft. Lauderdale. As I recall, we came out behind last time, but hey, it's a new year now, and I say we try it again.

It ought to be a pretty even match up, since at the moment, both regions have exactly 39 members...
Palm Beaches: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/search/search_wrimo/+home_region%3APalm%2BB...
Ft. Lauderdale: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/search/search_wrimo/+home_region%3ALauderda...

So what do you say - shall we give it a shot? Maybe it will give us that little extra motivation we all need to make our word count goals every day. If you guys are like the idea, I'll propose it in the Ft. Lauderdale forum (only fair to tell them we're challenging them) and then start a new topic with the region war widget (shows no data at the moment, but I guess it will be active starting in November) that will show our progress and theirs.

Any thoughts, let me know!

- Chris

PS. I notice also that our region list now includes our once (and future?) ML. Hi Krista!
