Nassau Write Ins Nov. 17 & 18

As set forth in other threads, Nisha and I will be hanging at the Borders on Old Country Road Monday & Tuesday night (11/17 & 11/18). One of us will be there by five each of those nights.

Its a great space for writing, plenty of outlets, long tables, and plenty of coffee and tea options. Being surrounded by books is always inspiring! I would, however, recommend getting your dinner elsewhere.

Last night, Nisha & I each kicked out about 3,000 words during our three hours in the cafe, plus we got a chance to chat and help each other out on some plot points.

Join us, we'd love to meet you and hear about your novels!

Hey guys. This thread is for all us Long Islanders to chat and complain about how other people say we have weird accents :p. I live in the Town of Babylon, which I think it broad enough to say without worrying about being stalked or something, lol. How about you guys?
Nov 29 - Pilgrimage to the Big Duck and Visit to Tweeds Buffalo Bar

I stoped at the Big Duck in Flanders today to find it open (some web pages were saying it wasn't open until after Thanksfgiving). Assuming that the person for the day doesn't call in sick the Big Duck will be open on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

My idea is to get a group together at the Duck around 1 PM on saturday, November 29, after thanksgiving. Obviously this isn't for everyone, especially for the western members of the group but it's easy to get to from the end of the LIE. After this we will then go to Riverhead where there is a great place called Tweeds Resturant and Buffalo Bar. The prices are a little high, but then again it's hard to tell. Online they say you can get a bison burger for $8.50 with potato wedges.

They also sell yellow rubber ducks at the Big Duck with "The Big Duck" written on them.

I need a good headcount to see how many peope are interested in the resturant part.

McGovern's is an Irish pub run by an American and a Brit, the latter of whom is my father and the former of whom is my father's best friend. They are both pretty liberal about who becomes their guests for the day (especially if one of their kids is bringing in a nice batch of them) and, as long as there isn't any major sporting events going on, the place is essentially empty. It is underage friendly, there are tons of meals and drinks served aside from beer and the like (and all of you who are over 21 can certainly get something stronger, if you so please). You can come in for a few drinks and some small snacks (anybody who sits with me can get a discount =D), I'll make sure to tell Edgar (the chef) to prepare some grease-less foods for all the laptop users in the house. It is easy to get to and I'd love to be able to host a write-in/chat for anybody who can get there. I made a thread about this earlier and there seemed to be some interest, so now we can talk about dates/times!
NYC kick off and Sunday write-ins on the island in nassau...

Hello all!

Tomorrow is the kick off party in NYC at the no idea bar. It looks like fun but I dont want to be the only longislander going...if anyone else is interested...email me (milan.loka @ gmail). Maybe we can get a group to go together.

Also, I know that people are still torn about suffolk/nassau write ins. Is anyone up for meeting at Panera on Old Country Road, Carle Place at two on Sundays for write-ins?

Hope everyone is gearing up for the big day!!

Just Popping In ...

Just popping in to say WAY TO GO LONG ISLAND REGION!! Pushing 400K on the 5th day! I think we are going to have a LOT of winners this year ... Keep writing. When your fingers get tired, use your toes. When your toes get tired, hire a secretary. Persi
The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shockproof shit detector. This is the writer's radar and all great writers have had it. ~Ernest Hemingway, interview in Paris Review, Spring 1958

Thanksgiving Break

I just realized that thanksgiving break takes up like a quarter of month so I should probably find some people by where I'll be then. If there are any people in the vacinity around Southhampton (westhampton beach, Speonk, Quogue) I'd love to meet up with you guys the week of thanksgiving. So let me know when and where some write ins will be.
Write in - Riverhead - Thursday or Friday - Anyone Interested?

I'm thinking the Panera Bread in Riverhead might be a good place for the east people to meet and write.

Location: 11 Commerce Drive - Down Route 58, (east of the end of the LIE) past the Riverhead Raceway (with that larget Native American statue) but before you get to Mill Road / Pulaski Street. They have their own stop light now. Either Thursdays or Fridays would be good for me, but I can't do the first Friday or the second Thursday due to other group commitments. 7:30 - 9:00 Sounds like a good time off the top of my head.

Now, in the other thread we have going I see many people are up for an October meet. So, what happens from there? Is there someone who typically sets this up? Or should I just throw out a place to meet, a date, and a time and see who can make it???

Welcome from the new Co-ML - Tenative Kick Off Meeting Information Included!

First of all welcome to NaNoWriMo. Welcome those who are new and those who are returning for the second, third, fourth time or more! This is my first year as co-Municipal Liaison and I’m excited. I’ll be working with Donavan who has gotten the whole ML thing down to a science.

First I should introduce myself. My name is Christopher Beattie, and my online handle is commonly known as “Tzor.” I’ve been doing NaNo for several years now and I’ve managed to win in the past few years! I’ve always admired the hard work the ML’s have put in the past.

The biggest problem is the kick off meeting. This is when we have the most numbers of people. It’s hard to find a good space. Most bookstores don’t have a “meeting room,” most libraries require residency for all of the members of the group, and you can’t really get 30 or 40 people into a Panera or a Starbucks. I’ve tentatively scheduled a kick off meeting at the Unitarian Universalist Church located at 380 Nicholas Road in Setauket. The date is Sunday, October 26th at 4 PM. After the meeting those who want to can head off for some dinner at the nearby John Harvards.

During the month of November, we generally have “write ins” at one of the local coffee places with internet access. Some of the areas we have used in the past have been the Panera that is on Route 110 in Huntington. Another place is either the Borders or the Barnes and Noble by Smith Haven Mall. Fridays are generally good days for write-ins although we can arrange for other dates if we have enough people in agreement.

Don’t forget to check out the new sponsorship feature! Yes it might be a near impossible task to get all your friends to write a novel, but it’s a little easier for them to give money for you writing a novel. If you have a number of friends who are all willing to give a little then we can be a strong region not only in word counts but in contributions! Let’s work to make this year the best our region has had!

----------

Moments of the Kick-Off Meeting

We had a great turnout at the kick-off meeting and I know that if you didn’t make it, you wanted to make it in spirit. We had old faces and new faces. Donavan forgot his duck, but Hiducky was there to take over the meeting, baseball bat in hand.

Did I mention I don’t do “minutes” … I do moments! Here are some of the things that transpired during this great kick off meeting. Once again we have a lot of writers eager to write and we discussed various suggestions about how to write without getting your inner editor in the way. People from all backgrounds are involved in this project.

We still have a week to go before we all start writing, so we can still spread the word. Check out the “Fun Stuff” tab and the “Flyers for Downloading.” There is one with pull tabs that would be great in a college dorm bulletin board, or on your local library’s bulletin board.

The next item was that of write-in locations and days. This is a complex matrix thing and the best way to solve it is to … well ask. So if you have a place and a day you would like to write with others (Panera Bread locations have food, drink and internet as does places like Starbucks) then post your idea here on the forums and see who else might be willing to join you. Using LOCATION & DATE would get the best response.

Some of us (nine to be exact) then retired to John Harvard’s for some food.

Don’t forget to get onto http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linotypo/ our regional email list for photos as well as the generic marathon template spreadsheet.

Well, I suppose I'll throw it out there...

My father owns a bar (all ages, but no drinking under 21 - not that you'd want to be drunk for NaNoWriMo anyway) in Oakdale by the name of McGovern's. It is pretty close to the Smith Haven Mall and I could easily make sure the place was empty for us - we could even get internet at the bar, my dad added an internet connection for people with laptops (a.k.a. him and me, really). I know it might not be the easiest place for all of you, but I think I could get in a LOT of people; and as long as we don't go when there is a big sporting event going on, the place would be deserted - and if we REALLY needed to, I could probably get him to 'close' for a couple of hours.
