There is a hollow ring of emptiness when I knock on the door of this forum. But I'm jetlagged after 8 weeks in Ireland and I thought I'd update our Singapore Novelists website (the index page anyway) and then take a look-see in here.

So open for discussion in case anyone enters in here are the following topics:

Venue: Maybe this year we could start early-ish on ideas for the event, whether we should change venue, day, time, and stuff like that. Three years at the Arts House has been good, but frankly I think we need a venue with better food choices, preferably cheaper and definitely halal since so many of our WriMos are unable to partake of what limited bites are on offer. Suggestions?

Arts Council grant: I think this year we will give it a miss as last year it worked out to be a bit of a burden on yours truly. We have Alphasmarts coming out of our ears so I think we can manage without.

Novel publishing: After so many years and so many novels, should we actually now begin the process of trying to get our novels published? Should we do it individually or should we do a writers' support group to get the ball rolling?

Anything else? Just throw it in here, if there's anybody about out there to read this in the first place.

How do you edit your novels? Do you print it out and then attack it with a red marker or do you just read it through on the computer and do the changes? Share your tricks because I have no idea how to start. Thanks.

For me, it is exam preparations from now till April ='(

Just had to tell everyone here that we are able to get a literary agent to talk to us for free on Saturday!!!

PLEASE SPREAD THE NEWS.

It is happening at The Arts House, Living Room which is second floor on Saturday, 8th December from 2pm-3pm.

I was wondering how our entire word count fared with other regions.

Well, being a small country, our total wordcount was still in the thousands where other places like London and Sydney were well into millions. However, we aren't that bad actually.

If you imagine every single word we wrote placed out in an area (i.e. number of words per square kilometer)
Here are the stats

Singapore 931 words per square km
Malaysia 0.799 words per square km
Sydney 127 words per square km
London 1977 words per square km

(Word count as of 10th Nov, 1620 GMT, Area estimates taken from Wikipedia)

So, we are churning out almost 8 times as many words than people in Sydney and only twice as slow as Londoners. (Haha, self-consolation)

Yup, it's near the end of NaNoWriMo 2007. Did you notice the word 'near'? That means it isn't the end yet!

It's time for all WriMos who have finished to go trawling through the Singapore authors to spot those who are within reach of the pretty purple winner's bar and PM them encouragement or open a cheer topic for them in the forum.

Do you feel that? It's the beckoning of the halfway point. You've rounded a corner and there's a little mountain lodge with a steaming cup of hot chocolate all ready and waiting for you.

The air is crisp, the mountain peaks look like Heidi should be yodelling from across the valley and there's a bubbling stream that deserves nearly 5,000 words of description alone to bring you to 25k.

Kinokuniya this Saturday

Kinokuniya actually have us on their website Events Page for this Saturday, 24th, 2-3pm.

It's an official event of the Singapore Chapter of NaNoWriMo with both MLs taking part along with Ovidia Yu (a past WriMo) and hopefully a couple of other writers, so if you can make it down to show your support for NaNoWriMo that would be much appreciated.

Singapore Writing Events

Some of you may already know that the Singapore Writers Festival runs from December 1 to 9. Go check out their website for more information on lots of events www.singaporewritersfestival.com. They're still in the process of updating it so keep checking. Tash Aw will be here and Goh Poh Seng will be making probably his final trip to Singapore from his home in Canada.

I was at the press conference this morning and NaNoWriMo was in the list of 'organisations to be thanked'. Wasn't that nice!

There's a Hallowe'en-meets-Getai event on at 7.30pm on the lawn at the Arts House this Saturday so if anyone wants to hang around after the Kick-off to attend that...

Word Wars

We've never had any official word wars before. I've been drifting around various other regions looking for potential opponents but they all seem to have paired off. Our traditional rivals in Malaysia are looking a bit quiet this year. End result is I have an idea for an internal Singapore word war (well, farfalla over in the Ireland: Elsewhere had the idea and I just sto... borrowed it).

Idea is this:

You sign up in here for one of the following Singapore regions:

East
West
North
Central
Overseas (okay, not technically in Singapore)

At the end of the first NaNo week I total your individual word counts and divide them by the number of WriMos representing each region and so on each week until the end. The winning team wins a prize at the TGIO. If Overseas win then we'll make arrangements for prizes to be delivered.

Valerie will have to count as two people because she's off the planet as far as word count goes :D
