Feeling wimpy that I have to bring a notebook to the write in. :( No word wars for me I guess, but I don't have anything to type on. My parents won't let me own anything I can type on.
Also feeling a bit intimidated that I'll be the only teenager there, probably. And that this is my first time ever trying to write a non-fanfiction novel.

Random writing around town

To get things going, I am going to be at Kaldi's this afternoon at around 4 p.m. to do some novel-planning. Anyone who feels like showing will be more than welcome. I will try to have a table tent or something for those who have no idea what I look like in person.

How does everyone keep themselves motivated to keep slogging along? Because, this is becoming a grind.

In theory, it sounds easy...1,667 words a day. No problem. Until it's a problem. Like, you get behind and have to turn out a slew of story/words to play catch up.

So, how do you make yourself keep going?

Thanks to NaNo, I tried something new today. I took my Neo (Alphasmart) to the gym. It balanced perfectly on the treadmill and I could exercise at a decent pace/incline while typing. Great little investment. I've had it for a couple of years and I love it.

Poll: Who's doing novel planning, and who's winging it?

So there are two schools of thought about NaNo novelling planning: 1) plan it all out in advance, with outlines and character sheets and such to make the novelling easier, or 2) don't do a thing till clock strikes midnight on Nov. 1, 'cause no planning leads to panic, and panic leads to adrenaline, and adrenaline leads to novelling awesomeness!

Which camp do you fall into?

I'll go first: (1) planned!

While in previous years I've winged it, this year I've actually got a plan. Mostly because I was working on a novel earlier this year that I haven't really started writing yet. I've got an outline that's good on the ends but sort of thin and mushy in the middle, some character sheets that are largely one dimensional, and a lot of world-building that I'm actually quite proud of.

Kick-Off Party

November is only two weeks away, so it's probably about time we get our kick-off planned.

In previous years, we've had a big party on the evening of the 31st, and hung out until midnight, at which point we all started writing furiously. Or at least, that was the plan. What usually happened was we got out our writing stuff at midnight, then got tired and went home.

This year, I think I'd like to split it up: a party Friday evening, and a write-in Saturday night. I'm thinking 6pm-9pm for the party, at a restaurant with good (and reasonably-priced) food. The write-in will start just before midnight (probably around 11pm) and run for however long we can keep going.

I haven't decided where to do this yet, so please chime in with some location suggestions!

In order to schedule write-ins, parties, and other writerly craziness so that as many people as possible can show up, I need to know when you people are available. Please your availability here. Also post your preferred meeting place(s).

I'll start:
I'm available weekends and Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. Tuesday and Thursday evenings can be opened if necessary, but I'd prefer to not have to do that.

Thanks to the suggestion at the meet up yesterday, I looked up and read about the Snowflake Method for constructing a novel. I got as far as the First Sentence, which allowed me to crystallize the premise of the (attempted) novel I am going to spew this month.

I also got to get me one of those spiffy NEO keyboards...just because.

Thanks to fluggington for putting it together. I am quite glad I went yesterday.
