NaNoWriMo Israel 2008

Shalom Everyone,

I'll repost this in Hebrew when I get home so if Hebrew is your strong suit wait till you receive that post.

Do you sometimes feel the spirit move you? I've got this bug, and I'd like to infect as many others with it as humanly possible. Of course I'm talking about the NaNoWriMo bug. True November is more than four months away but if we want to do this properly, we'll need a little time to prepare. What do I have in mind?

Preparing a couple of pages of explanation in Hebrew (translated from NaNoWriMo.org) and a couple of their cute posters
Contacting the libraries and Matnasim throughout Israel encouraging them to post the posters and generally prompt the madness
Possibly forwarding a Hebrew NaNoWriMo package to all high schools with a creative writing program/course

What I need is a "little help from my friends". Especially in the translation department!

If you are interested / willing to translate one page from English into readable, attention catching Hebrew, your assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!

First Tel Aviv Write-In

November 9th, that's Friday, morning -- something like 9 or ten, at my house in mid-Tel Aviv -- very near Diesengoff Center. The menu: breakfast and writing fest. Five hours of intensive writing! No excuses! Msg me if you want to come, because obviously we've got limited room.

Birds of a Feather

The title comes from the old adage, "Birds of a feather, stick together."

If you enjoyed the NaNoWriMo experience of 100,000 other like minded crazies all trying to write 50,000 words in one month, I'd like to invite you to join me in staying in touch. If you enjoy writing for writing's sake or if you have aspirations of developing a wider readership, perhaps actually publishing some day then we really need to stay in touch.

At this point, December 2nd, 2007, I really can't envision much more than a virtual nexus like the "Birds-of-a-Feather" wiki and perhaps a discussion forum, but the possibility of real-world face-to-face activities are a distinct possibility.

TGIO Party : Help!

My sincere apologies. I let you all down! Early Monday morning I was abducted by aliens and it took me the better part of the week to escape their ship and return to my proper place in the space-time continuum. As a result instead of organizing a TGIO party for Saturday night, I was fighting for my life against vicious man eating creatures from outer space.

Now I'm trying to play "Catch-Up" and I'll need YOUR help to pull this one off!

With 63% in favor of Saturday night (13 votes out of over a hundred Israeli Wrimos), the official TGIO event will be held Saturday night somewhere in Tel Aviv

Next problem is where? Do any of our Tel Avivian friends have any suggestions? We need a cafe or quiet pub willing to let ten to twenty people share an extended table. If you have any viable suggestions please contact me ASAP either at israel@nanowrimo.org or at 02-9944532.

If this cafe or pub could be close to a transportation hub, Alozerov Train Station or the Central Bus Station (preferably the former) so out-of-towners could get in after Shabbat ... all the better.

Finally as a Jerushalemite who just might not make it to Tel Aviv Saturday night, is there anyone willing to stand-in as my replacement to greet people at the door and share with the rest of us a report after the dust has settled?

Early bird TGIO party at my place

For those who live in Tel-Aviv area (or willing to travel) and do not keep Shabbat, we are having an informal "no more nanowrimo" party before the official one Yoel is organizing. It will start at 10am, but will not yet be the party -- from 10am to 11:59pm, you are welcome to show up, you'll be treated to food, drink and quiet -- yes, it is the NaNoWriMo catch up, where we will write as fast as possible to become winners. Once 11:59 hits, winner and non-winner alike will enjoy merryement, food, drink and more noise as we celebrate the second when it ends. Those silly enough to be coming in from catching up will be joining us at 12:30am Saturday, where we will commiserate and enjoy.

Crash places are available for those unable to get back -- so reserve a place on my couch early!

You can arrive from Tel-Aviv: it's near Hertzeliah Central Bus Station, 501 gets here so you can wait until Shabbat is over. Also perhaps the kind-hearted and carful among you could maybe offer rides to ther others. This is the last Saturday we have for NaNo, so let us make the most of it?

Word Counts, World Wide

If you click over on Fun Stuff you'll fins an option called Word Count Scoreboard. There you'll find a list of all the regions, world wide, and how many words they've written, how many each member of the region have averaged, and how much that region has donated ($$$).

Initially our situation looks pretty depressing. The Elsewhere::Israel regions ranks, are you sitting down? ....... 175th out of 350. Certainly nothing to write home about. (I couldn't help myself.)

Yet when you sort the list by average words per member for each region, we are a respectable 45th! Yeah us!

I have to warn you, the Egyptians (yes they participate as well!) are ahead of us at position 21. None-the-less, I have faith in you. I suggest that over the next seven days we all try to write an extra, say 15 minutes each day! If we all we do I think we can close the gap between us and Egypt considerably!

Go team, go!

The first write-in was superb. We want everybody to join in this experience. Everybody progressed really well, and it's surprisingly easy, not awkward, to write in front of others.

Shalom Everybody,

As the Elsewhere::Israel ML I'm trying to create opportunities for as many of you to meet face-to-face as possible. That's what I signed up for, and I'm looking forward to creating them to the best of my ability.

To actually make them happen I'm going to need some assistance. Thats where YOU come in!

Right now I could use assistance in writing a few dozen emails to try to identify where you all reside. Just broadcasting isn't working. Maybe if we send a personalized email to each and every person associated with this region who actually happens to live here, we'll have a clearer picture of who lives close to whom. From there it will be easier to make this happen.

Let me give you an idea:
- In Jerusalem there are over 24 people registered with this region. Who knows how many are NOT registered!
- I identify eight people in the Kefar Saba / Rannana / Hertzeliya area
- There are over thirty in the Tel Aviv area
- In Haifa and Kariyot there are five

All this based upon what these good people wrote in their Author's Information. The rest wrote "Israel". If we could solicit the specific city everyone lives in, it would be possible, for instance, to let the eight, ten or fourteen people in Kefar Saba / Rannan / Hertzeliya know about the others (in a safe fashion) and I could help them organize a get-together. In the same manner we could do similar things for the rest of the country.

Who has a couple of hours to help out this weekend?
