On the lookout for a good TGIO venue

Hey y'all,

It was nice to see some of you at the mid-term event earlier today.

Now Chuck and I are on the lookout for a place to hold the TGIO party at the end of the month.

In the past, we've had fellow Wrimos host it at their place...or have gone to places like Epicurean. Frankly, we kinda preferred the more private venue.

So we wanted to drop a head's up that if you know of a place where we can have it, please let us know.

Setting Up Write-In Guidelines

Hey all,

A while ago Rise came up with some general guidelines for setting up write ins. Here are a few of them...

1. Make sure that your Subject line covers location, time, date/days, and that it's a write in. For example:

Write-In Tuesdays, Cleveland Park, 5-7

2. Make sure that the content of your message gives a more specific location as well as directions if it's a bit out of the way. For example:

Who? krobin
Where? Nanny O'Brien's @ Cleveland Park
When? Tuesdays 5-7pm

Directions? On Conn Ave. 1 block south of Cleveland Park metro, just across from the Uptown Theatre.

Hi all! Your friendly neighborhood MLs Chuck and Kay here. Based on the forum posts so far it appears that many of you are already back and geared up for another great year of NaNo. Awesome! We're looking forward to another year of off the wall, over-caffeinated, hair pulling, sleep deprived novel writing!

For you DC veterans, Welcome Back! For anybody new to the DC region of NaNo, Welcome! Glad you're here to join in on the craziness that is NaNoWriMo!!!

We've got a great group of Wrimos here in DC, so for folks who don't know (or may have forgotten, hehe), we run a pretty loose ship. Please feel free to set up write-ins at your own discretion (Kay will be setting up a post soon to describe the proper way to post a write-in). For all the new folks (or those who may have never been to a write-in), I highly recommend coming to the write-ins. They are a great way to meet new people, hang out with folks as crazy as you are, and get ideas when you're stuck. Also, there will be a few organized events coming in the month of Nov. (Kick-off party, Mid-term get together, TGIO party). Details for these are coming soon. In the meantime, meet your fellow Wrimos, chat, mingle, swap stories of NaNos gone by, or just stop by the forums to see who's doing what.

Ready for a pre-NaNo pep talk? I'll make it short :-)! I know there are those of you out there saying to yourselves, "I can't do this, this is crazy. How am I supposed to write a book in a month?" Well, let me be the first to say YES YOU CAN! Everyone can reach the finish line, and even if you don't, that is okay, the experience alone is well worth the time invested. So, when you start to feel like you won't make it, your character gets stuck in a tree for 40 pages and you can't get them out (you know who you are, hehe), or flesh eating zombies killed your main character; feel free to come to the forums, write-ins, or your MLs and ask for help. Somebody is bound to know where your MC is when they've been carried away by an army of trolls that live in a shoebox in the closet.

Once again, Welcome! I can't wait to see familiar faces and meet new folks at the Kick-off party and write-ins. If at any point you have any questions, comments, concerns, or just want to say HI, please feel free to drop myself or Kay a line, that's what we're here for.

November 1 is just around the corner! Woohoo!

For others who have today off, there will be a write-in starting at 11:30 am, probably going to 1, at Coffee and Crumbs (which has wireless, for the quick wikipedia check of a locational or historical detail for optimum fictional accuracy)

DC Mid-Term Party!!! Sat. Nov. 15

Believe it or not my fellow DC wrimos, the midway point of November is almost upon us. Crazy, I know! To celebrate, and to take a short break from your writing responsibilities, we are going to have an informal get together this coming Saturday.

Details:

Where? Buffalo Billiards, Dupont Circle - http://www.buffalobilliards.com/dc/
When? Sat. Nov. 15 - 3pm until...
Who? Everybody

Directions? Due to lack of parking in Dupont I recommend taking Metro. Red Line to Dupont Circle exit. Take South exit escalator to 19th Street. Buffalo Billiards is directly across the street.

Again, this will be very informal. We will try to grab some tables and/or couches so that we can sit/linger. Buffalo Billiards has a full menu including appetizers/bar food; burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and salads. There are also several full bars for those who wish to partake in some adult beverages. There are also pool tables for those who wish to play. Not sure about price, although I know there is a rental fee.

So whether you are 5k over word count or you just got started, it doesn't matter. Come out, take your mind off of that novel for a few hours, have some fun, and hang out with your fellow wrimos.

Directions:

P&P is located on Connecticut Avenue, right at the intersection with Nebraska Avenue.
It is north of Van Ness/ UDC and south of Chevy Chase Circle.

By Metro: Take the Red Line to Van Ness. We are one mile north on Connecticut (a 15 minute walk). You can also take and L1 or L2 bus from the Metro stop.

Parking: We have a parking lot in the rear of the store. If you are driving north on Connecticut, turn right at Fessenden Street then make an immediate left. The entrance to the lot is just before you enter the woods, on the left. If you are driving south on Connecticut you will pass the store on your left after you cross Nebraska Avenue. Make a left turn at Fessenden. There is also street parking.

I'm about a day behind, according to the big calendar, but I feel confident that I'm at least not too far behind pace.

I see we've got a lot of AU Nano-ers, I was wondering if anyone was interested in attending write-ins on campus or nearby.

Some suggested locations:

Mary Graydon/ the quad, depending on the weather

The Starbucks at Tenley

Mudbox/Library

As for times, I'm free for a alot of times, usually the afternoon. I just wanted to see if I could get anyone interested. I'm pretty much free for anything, I use pen and paper and therefore, I'm pretty portable.

Hello out there! Is there anyone doing NaNoWriMo in the Capitol Hill area? I work in Dupont and live near RFK, so I'm hoping that we can set-up some write-ins in the Capitol Hill and/or Dupont areas, or somewhere in-between! It seems like all the suggested write-ins so far are in the NW extremity.

Any ideas/suggestions/thoughts on write-in locations, times, days, etc?

Directions: Metro to Dupont Circle. North entrance, right at top of escalator. Cross Conn Ave., turn left on Conn. Ave., walk one block north to R St. Cosi on right, on corner.

Impromptu session; three bar seats and one at my table. Free wireless; beer and wine served in coffee-shop atmosphere. I'm in the front corner with the small silver Mac laptop.

Starbucks down on the right on the corner of Penn and 3rd. Come to the back of the Starbucks, there is a set of stairs that leads up to the second floor. Address is: 237 Pennsylvania Ave SE

I will probably show up around 730ish or so, but I set the write-in to start around 7 so folks can feel free to come early. I know there were a few people who said they would try to get there around 7 so they could get their writing in and get home in time to see Grey's Anatomy.
