Fribourg was an astounding success - thanks guys! - but now we have to think about NEXT Saturday. The question is, where would you like it to be held?

We have an offer of the use of someone's house in Solothurn for the afternoon of Nov 22, if that appeals.

Or we can go to Bern.

Or we can go to Thun.

Or we can go to Interlaken.

Or somewhere else.

I think somewhere central would be best, but it's up to you guys. Can you post with a thought, a suggestion, a hope and a prayer?

Morning all, from sunny Fribourg!

I'm sure we're all reaching the point where we either have some extra words or could use some extras. The purpose of this thread is to provide a bank you can deposit words in or withdraw them from.

Here's the rules:

1) If you make a withdrawal, you must either:
A) Make a deposit of your own later on OR
B) Post a follow-up for how you spent the words you withdrew.

2) Deposits should be between 50 and 150 words.

3) Deposits should avoid character names and location names - keep them generis enough that it's easy to weave them into an existing narrative.

To start things off, here's my deposit!

Save it on a different hard drive, on a thumb drive, whatever - just make sure you have more than just that one copy of your novel!

I hope that you are coping well with the horror of Week 2, the point where many WriMos decide to quit NaNo due to frustration or boredom. Do not give up! You can do this! Just have faith ... and a lot of coffee. I decided to restart my novel on November 11, so you are all definitely ahead of me.

I wanted a place to post my excuses for why I haven't written anything (other than this post) yet today, and it's already 12:37. Perhaps if I trot my lame excuses into the sunshine of our regional forum, the excuses will be so humiliated that they'll go away and stop bothering me. In ascending order of writerliness...

It's Sunday, and I "deserve" to sleep late.
It's raining (pls note that these first two are the same excuses I used to get out of going running this morning also).
BBC Prime had a re-re-run of Dancing with the Stars on, and I couldn't miss the results show.
I watched not one, but two movies, and didn't start until after 10:00pm. I'm sure tho that this was research on dialogue.
I'm in a character development section, and I don't want to write all that dialogue. "He said, she said, boom, we're done."
What if my mother reads the sex scenes? On the other hand, I've not let anyone read a book I've written that wasn't for work for over 20 years, so really why should this one matter?
I have a plot outline for a really lovely little book, but it's difficult to write b/c bad shite happens to good people and I don't really like bad shite happening to good people. If I make them bad people, we won't care that the bad shite happens, which pretty much defeats the purpose of writing the lovely little book.

There! Don't I feel better now. I'm gonna go waste some more time and make lunch. Please feel free add your favorite excuse(s) of the day...

Wie bereits in den Vergangenen drei Jahren werde ich jeden Sonntag Nachmittag/Abend im Starbucks beim Claraplatz anzutreffen sein.
Wer sich zu einem inoffiziellen Treffen oder Write-In dazugesellen möchte schriebt mir am besten bis jetweils Sonntag Mittag.

Dieses Jahr fallen die Sonntage auf November 2, 9, 16, 23 und 30.

Sollte Interesse bestehen, können wir nach der "Arbeit" auch noch Punke des Vergnügens anschliessen, fallen die ersten beiden Daten noch in die Herbstmesse (vom Claraplatz aus jeweils 5 Minuten Gehweg zum Messe- oder Kasernenareal) und am letzen Sonntag hätte bereits der Weihnachtsmarkt offen.

I apologise for the long silence from me - we have been moving house, and I worked two 12-hour shifts with no chance of internet connection. But I am back! Bon, c'est peut être à double emploi MAIS! J'ai l'impression que je suis pas la seule Genevoise-Romane du secteur donc j'en profite pour demander...

Pour ceux qui sont sur Genève, est-ce que ça vous dirait si on s'arrange pour se voir hors meeting officiel? Pas que je veuille faire des infidélités aux meet ups d'Ally mais je sais que c'est pas toujours facile de se déplacer àl'autre bout de la Suisse.

L'autre raison, un peu moins altruiste celle-là, de ce post est que je procrastine un peu trop et que je trouve plus sympa d'écrire en groupe - comme ça. même si je discute, ben c'est toujours plus productif que chatter sur msn pour me plaindre à mes amis. LOL.

Dites-moi ce que vous en pensez - si personne veut, et ben j'irais me pendre et pis voilà... Et j'irais vous hanter pendant les meet ups... Mouahahahahahahahah!

Guess it seems sort of useless to come up with a whole thread only for that but still... Uselessness doesn't exist - else I wouldn't be writing at all!^^

So... on with the reason why I'm posting this thread: I'm not the only one living near Geneva - well, I don't think so, lol.^^ So, I would like to know if anyone living in Geneva or close enough to said city would agree to come to unofficial writes in?

Well, it's just an idea...

Another reason for me posting this would be the following: I procrastinate far too much and I'd rather write along with other persons than alone in my flat or at Uni, speanding my time complaining on msn. And even if I tend to talk a lot - though I talk a bit less in English than in French - I think it'd be more useful than being alone.^^

So, just tell me if you are interested - if you're not, then I'll just go, hand myself and then come back to haunt you singing the 'Ding dong song' by Günther! I swear, I will! Mouahahahaha!

Question of Tenses (grammar) in novel-writing

Hi all,
i was not sure where to post this - so i have started a new thread.
i've a question - i've been writing in present tense all along - in the 3rd person.

Example:
“Look – someone is looking for housemates – I say we call her now and ask about it!” says Nelly excitedly.
Coral looks at the ad, “Hmmm… I’m not sure…

During my non-writing time, i noticed that the book i was reading writes in past tense.
So that the above sentence would read:
“Look – someone is looking for housemates – I say we call her now and ask about it!” said Nelly excitedly.
Coral looked at the ad, “Hmmm… I’m not sure…

Would using present tense cause any problems which i have yet to see?
Why do people use mainly past tense??

Sorry if this is too technical but i really don't wanna be stuck cos of grammar!

Hello all - hope your writing is going well! What happened to our chatty little forum - it's been almost silent since NaNo started... could it be we're all so busy pounding away at our novels, we have no time for idle chatter? If you have a couple minutes, how about a brief post here to let us all know how your NaNo experience is going?

I'll kick things off:

I accidentally stumbled on a plot 3k words in and I'm nearly delirious with joy - after 5 or so years of NaNo, this is the FIRST time I've had a plot before week three - and it feels great! I'm also thrilled that my MC has a sense of humor - I have a nasty habit of writing the most sorrowful whiny MCs (never on purpose!) and it's nice to be able to have fun with one.

So now tell me - how is your novel? Is your MC behaving? Do your friends and family think you've lost it? Anyone thinking of giving up already?

The 1st of November - The Day of Reckoning

It will soon be upon us again, fellow NaNos, the day we've all been looking forward to and dreading at the same time. The day on which words will start filling the blank pages on our computer screens, the day when small black letters shall dispose of the emptiness inside and outside of us all.

Some of us will march on forward into this war of words to come out heroes at the other end of the month, while others, wretched failures, shall be left behind bleeding on the side of the road. Here at NaNo we practice no compassion, because ultimately, everyone is on their own. Of course we encourage each other before the battle, but once the heat of it has started, each and every one of us will be happy to steal the boots off a former comrade's corpse.

Exchange niceties while you still can, because there isn't much time left for it. Once the first shot of battle is heard, once the war against time and our own laziness has started, to battle we all shall march. Our typing will be heard across the universe, crackling wrists and carpal tunnel presenting no obstacle as we will press ever forward on our march - our ultimate march - towards our common, far-away goal. Our victory, our heart, our soul - in 50'000 words.

Dear NaNos, I wish you all the best, and that you all shall come out victorious at the end of the month.

PS: As a point of reference, this post here (without the PSes) was composed in 7 minutes and is made up of 258 words. Just so you can get used to the idea of word count being the driving force behind your lives in the coming month.

Panik

Bis jetzt war ich optimistisch, wie jedes Jahr. Und dieses Jahr setzt die Panik einen Tag früher ein als in sonstigen Jahren. Mein heissgeliebtes Laptop ist zu Boden gefallen, tot, kaputt, fertig. Wie soll ich schreiben ohne Laptop? Jetzt bin ich ein kopfloses Huhn, ein Tag früher, das ist ja nicht zum aushalten und ein Vermögen für einen Laptop darf ich auch liegen lassen...

Stunden und Tage

Hoi zäme
ich bin neu beim NaNoWri. Bin noch unsicher, ob ich überhaupt anfangen soll. Ich habe Beruf, Familie und nebst dem Schreiben noch andere Interessen. Wie soll ich das alles unter einen Hut bringen, wenn ich jeden Tag noch 3, 4, 5 Stunden schreiben werde? Oder mit wieviel Zeit für die 50'000 Wörter rechnet ihr? Wie lange waren die täglich am Schreiben, die das Ziel erreichten? Ich habe kein Drehbuch, keine Geschichte im Kopf, sondern stelle mir vor, dass ich einfach schreibe, was mir in den Sinn kommt. So quasi ein ausgedehntes Tagebuchprojekt. So würde zum mindesten mein Schreiben nicht allzusehr durch viel Nachdenken über den Inhalt verlangsamt …
Und noch eine Frage? Hat jemand von euch schon Mal das mit dem Luddite Clause (wie ist das zu übersetzen?) probiert. Ich habe grosse Lust meine Sätze via mechanischer Schreibmaschine direkt zu Papier zu bringen.

Bonjour à tous!

Désolée de ne pas avoir fait un post en français avant - j'ai tellement l'habitude de l'anglais que j'en perds mon français et qu'il a fallu qu'Allocin en parle pour que je pense à traduire...

Si jamais, je m'appelle Astray - Noémi de mon vrai nom - et je suis étudiante en Lettres à l'Uni de Genève - troisième année, quelle horreur. C'est mon premier NaNo - et je suis terrifiée, et en même temps exaltée... enfin, c'est compliqué donc... Comme c'est dimanche je vais faire cours.

Coment vous sentez vous à l'approche de la date fatidique? Avez-vous déjà un plot, une idée très vague ou le roman déjà entièrement scénarisé sous votre scalp? De quoi parlera votre NaNo? (Et je n'ai plus d'idée pour les questions... c'est horrible.)

Je suis ici non seulement pour vous souhaiter la bienvenue à tous les WriMo helvétiques ET francophones, mais aussi pour vous annoncer une graaaaaaaaaaaaande nouvelle:

Un premier meet up aura lieu le samedi 1er Novembre à Genève - au Starbucks près de la gare de Cornavin. D'autres informations suivront - très certainement de la part d'Allocin, notre LM. (Ciel, c'est moi ou ça fait discours de gourou?^^)

N'hésitez pas à venir si vous le pouvez! Bien sûr, vous pouvez aussi amener qui vous voulez! Plus on est de fous plus on rit!

D'autres write in auront lieu pendant le mois de Novembre mais on ne sait pas encore où. Si vous avez des suggestions ou des idées, vous serez les bienvenus! (Mais je n'offre pas les cookies... J'en ai plus.)
