Tuesday Lunch Write-ins at The Cup

I just realized we had not posted a reminder about this. It is on our calendar, however!!!

I am in the back room of the Cup now at a four top. The large table was already taken. Reply to this post, or NaNoMail me and let me know if you plan to join me, and I'll watch for an opening for a larger table if needed (or a second table I can push together with mine). I am so excited to see you all!

Sunday Conor O'Neill's - I may or may not be there

Hi,

Just to clarify - I don't want my suggestion from 2 weeks ago taken as a "regular write-in." I am not necessarily going to be there.

The Celtic music starts at 7:30 pm, though.

Thanks!
The Mid-November "Absurdly Ambitious Goal" thread

Where do you want to be Monday morning, November 17th?

This is mid-November, our Weekend of Writing Dangerously! Let's set some Dangerous goals. If you're behind, plan to get caught up. If you're ahead, plan to leave all expectations in the dust.

Here's the idea: Set a goal that's just on the edge of what you can possibly do by the end of the weekend. Make it well past your comfort zone, considering the amount of time you think you can spend, but not so far that it's not humanly possible. Make it big enough that if you don't reach it, you'll still have made leaps and bounds with your novel just pushing yourself towards it.

I'm at 16,666 right now, and I'm going to set myself the unreasonably ambitious goal of 30,000 words. If I don't make it, trying to make it will at least get me caught up or almost so.

How about you?

Let's also make this thread a place to help each other when we're stuck in our plots. The key to reaching an ambitious word-count goal is knowing what comes next in the story. Let's help each other find out what comes next!
writing party at Flatiron Crossing food court

Greetings to Boulder-area participants! I'm thinking about hosting a writing party at the Flatiron Crossing mall on Sunday, November 16 starting at 11am. The food court area is large with plenty of seats to spread out and write.

I will ask a few restaurants there if they will offer a discount to NaNoWriMo participants and get back to you!

The Terrible Horrible No-Good Very Bad PROCRASTINATION Thread

So what do y'all like to do when you're not writing... or when you should be writing? This is a thread for being a Very Bad Influence on each other. No apologies! Addictions, guilty pleasures, etc. go here.

--

I have two to share. One is writing-related; the other absolutely is not.

The Neverending Choose Your Own Adventure Story Engine
http://www.littlebull.com/Story/

This has been an ongoing coding project of mine. (If you see any bugs, let me know.) It's for when you want to write, but you and your novel (or other work in progress) aren't on speaking terms, and you want to just create some throw-away, just-for-fun fiction. Maybe you add on to an existing story. Maybe you start your own. Maybe someone adds on to your story in unexpected ways. It's fun!

Yo Ho Ho Puzzle Pirates
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/

For the sake of all you hold dear, if you are susceptible to mini-game/puzzle-game addictions, don't go here until after you've done your daily Nano'ing! It will eat your soul! Plus, it's cute. Essentially, it's a pirate-themed massive multiplayer role playing game in which all shipboard tasks, necessary crafts, and player-versus-player face-offs are determined by puzzle games. I mean it! Don't do it until you're done for the day! It's dangerous!
Boulder Writing Groups

I got this today, but I can't find it in the thread, so I'm starting a new one . . .

comment 'RE: Welcome Boulder (and vicinity) !' by vortexae

Quote:So in addition to two complete novels I'm also looking to find
some diabolical writerly partners in crime. I'd love to start up a
writing syndicate in boulder, maybe meeting biweekly to crank out short
stories, essays, compile small but potent books of poetry, interviews,
etc and just carpet bomb publishers with our stuff. Writing can be
super lonely and I think it would really help raise the energy to have
a tribe of rock star writers to roam around and spill words with. If
you're looking for a hard-core writing buddy, I'm your man! ^_^
I *love* this idea! I currently meet with a writing group twice a month
in Highland Square, which is a bit of a drive. I would love to have a
group here on my doorstep where the non-car version of the commute
isn't an hour and a half. Are you thinking of starting a 'zine? a
trying-to-get-published support group? just make a space where creating
words is the order of the day?

*************************************************************

I would LOVE to do something like this. I am a very social critter and that keeps me from writing more often than anything else.

I live in Louisville, so anywhere between there and Boulder would be great with me.

Probably the best thing is for whoever started this thread and/or our fearless leader to name a date and time (in December) to gather for such a thing.

I'd show up.

Inspiration from Natalie Goldberg

If I think I'm "stuck" in writing, pulling out the old faithful, "Writing Down the Bones" from Natalie Goldberg, or "Old Friend From Far Away," and others almost never fails to get my fingers in motion.

I read one paragraph and I can hardly put fingers to keyboard fast enough.

Search Inside it on Amazon if you don't have these. You will probably want to own a copy.

Welcome Boulder (and vicinity) !

Hi, everybody!

Welcome back!

It's almost October, which means it's almost November! Introduce, or re-introduce yourself here...then have at the forums!

I'm SlyCrow, I have been doing this for almost too many years to remember, but I have never gotten even half-way to 50,000 words. I have a couple of daughters, one may be able to spell enough words this year to make a story herself...we'll see. Hope to see you around the forums, and maybe at some of the get-togethers, too.

Sat Nov 15 - Tea Spot Group - noon to 2 pm (or longer!)

Come join us this coming Saturday. Very nice place to write! Good tea and snacks. Nice people.

I would like to suggest that we spend 10 minutes (15?) about 1 pm to chat, meet one another, say a few words about our novels and/or ask a question.

Thanks to the WriMos who helped me answer these questions last Saturday: How long is a medical residency? What sort of disability might keep someone from enlisting during WWII but wouldn't keep them from becoming a surgeon later? The brainstorming helped a lot!

Onwards! : )

How to Pull Yourself Over the Hump - good article

http://www.writerstechnology.com/2008/11/how-to-pull-yourself-over-the-h...

I'll give you the opeing paragraphs. There are about 7 sugestions. You may have heard them before. I particularly liked the quote about one that Neil Gaiman mentioned in his recent appearance.

How to Pull Yourself Over the Hump

By: Dustin Wax | Nov.12, 2008 | How To, Productivity

There comes a time in nearly every big writing project when you just can’t seem to move forward. Maybe you’ve written yourself into a corner and aren’t sure how to get out of it, maybe the end just seems too far away to be reachable, or maybe you burned through your initial enthusiasm and it just isn’t fun any more.

The difference between a writer and a dabbler is what you do at that point. A lot of folks will give up – pack up their manuscript and put it away, telling themselves they’ll pick it up again when their inspiration returns. Unfortunately, it rarely does. The real writers are the ones who push through these hard moments, doing whatever they have to do to overcome or bypass the thorny problems that keep them from reaching the end of their manuscript.

There are many strategies a writer can use to get up and over the hump. Try some of these ideas to help you deal with your own writing challenges and get your project done.

Writing Music?

Usually I don't play music while I write. I find it either distracting or completely unnoticed so what's the point. But trying to tune out my inner critic, I've taken to plugging in to iTunes, and I found myself wondering what others are listening to.

As for me: mostly dubstep podcasts, occasional All Songs Considered.

Anyone else?

(Yes, this is primarily a procrastination thread, and secondarily a Hey What's Up Boulder thread.)
Write-a-thon in Denver! (An early heads-up)

This just in from the Denver MLs!

Quote:
Monday Nov 24, 10:00am to 10:00PM
Colorado Night of Writing Dangerously
At the Seven Cups Teahouse at 1882 S Pearl, Denver (map)

Description: A twelve-hour marathon write-in to raise funds for the Office of Letters and Light! Please bring $10 to contribute to the cost of renting the space and/or money for tea and snacks if you so desire.

Mongoose and John and I went to the write-a-thon last year. It was the perfect opportunity to get caught up! They had prizes for the most words written during that 12-hour time and lots to snack on to keep everyone fueled. And I'm always a fool for a new teahouse experience.

It's still a month off, of course, but never hurts to plan!

Important! If you plan on going, do NOT rsvp here. Instead, go to the Colorado::Denver forum and RSVP in the appropriate thread. Here's a direct link to it! Again, RSVP there and not here! The people who need to know how many people to plan for aren't reading this thread, but that one!

Edited to add: Now on our wonderful new Regional Calendar! "Thanks, Google!"
How my Nanowrimo decied to kill itself...

So, have you ever had your Nanowrimo comit suiced? like your computer decieds to burst into flame, your backpack swallows the pages you spent the last day writing before you could type them, your dog eats your computer hardrive, or another form of death.

so write your death storys here.

mine: my nano is on a device like an alfa smart untill i put it on my computer. unfortunetly, unkown to me, it has a limited memory for each file. i had just been working on a part for the past day and a half, getting a ton of writing done and planning to put it into computer tonight. just as i got to a good stopping point, i exited it properly and turned it off. when i tryed to open it again, all the file said was a bunch of random charitures and FILE MEMORY FULL in nice big bold leaders like that. i tried to put it into the computer and failed. the file itself would not even open for more than a minnet. DARN YOU ALFA SMART! *shakes fist at it* so now i'm at least 6000 words behind and i had at least 3000 words. DARN YOU!!!!!!

so please write your heart wrenching, anger filled, stories of nanowrimo commiting suiced. it's the end of the world. so lets get distracted.
OT -- Cat sale

Honest to God. I saw on 9News that the Denver Dumb Friends League has 650 cats up for adoption, so during the week (M-F) they're offering adult cats for sale for $10 each.

So if you were thinking about getting a kitty companion, this is a chance to give a home to someone who needs it, and to do it inexpensively as well.

This includes the standar stuff, neutering, vet check, microchip, etc. I looked at their site (http://www.ddfl.org), and they only have 112 cats listed, but maybe they just don't have all the pictures and information up yet.
Brainstorming: Where Do You Like To Write?

Restaurants, cafes, bookstores, bars - in which ones do you like most to whip out your spiral notepad or laptop? What local establishments do you prefer when looking for an office-away-from-home?

Tell us about 'em!

If you can say a specific word or two about wi-fi reliability, AC outlet availability, atmosphere, table space in the place you're talking about, that'll be especially helpful to others who might be evaluating its write-in potential on these bases.
Early Morning Writers?

I'm not the midnight oil kinda girl.

Me, I leap out of bed at 6 am and reach for my laptop - *hopefully* after I have meditated at least 20 minutes or so.

Are there any other Morning Persons(tm) here?

(Technically, Louisville, but I was granola before there was a word for it.)

Boulder NaNo's: Happy Wednesdays?

I was hoping there would be some sort of a writing/ drinking group posted here... but since there isn't one yet, I'll start the idea.
Wednesday's might be a good night. It is for me at least; not a busy night, but no deadlines to meet at work on Thursday morning either ; ) ! Perhaps we should start on the 29th with a meet and greet and a sharing of thoughts, hopes and dreams? Now all we need is a time and place. Dark Horse seems to be a fairly quiet bar, located at approximately Baseline and 28th/ 36. I also like that location because I can stumble back home to my apartment across the street and probably not get lost. But I am open to any and all suggestions! Really, any night, and time after 5pm and any place is good for me. I just want to have a little support group with a glass or five of wine.
Of course this idea would have to be for the 21 plusers, but perhaps we should also organize an all ages weekly meet up at a coffee shop? Just because I'm an alcoholic doesn't mean I need to exclude others.
So what do we think? Don't make me have to go all the way to Denver for my time wasting when I should be writing!
