Who are you? Where are you?

While we're waking up and realizing that the forums have indeed opened early, why don't you tell us a little about yourself? If you don't know where to start, who you are, where you're from (Atlanta's a huge region, after all!), your previous NaNo or Script Frenzy experience if any, and what you're writing about (if you know) are always good options.

I'm Sujin, and I'm from Decatur, where I'm in my last year of a math/French double major at Agnes Scott. This year I have a very vague idea about a traveling notebook inspired by a notebook I sent out in the big big world over a year ago and got curious about recently. We'll see what happens. As for past NaNo and Script Frenzy history, I've done and won NaNo every year since 2002, and I've done and won Script Frenzy ever since its inception in 2007. November can't come fast enough!

Who's next?
Gwinnettians!

Hello, my fellow Gwinnett County denizens! There seem to be quite a few of us hanging around on the Atlanta boards this year, so I'm going to post this hear rather than in Georgia::Elsewhere.

I'm Erin, and while not an ML, I do want to try and plan a few get togethers for those of us out here in the suburbs. I know its hard to drive to Atlanta from here, and that MARTA isn't always effecient for us to use, but I think it would be awesome if we could create our own fun and write together as a community.

How about we start NaNo this year with a Kick-Off Party at the Atlanta Bread Company at the Mall of Georgia on Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00 pm. They have tables and food and coffee and plenty of space to get to know each other and brainstorm.

I would say the weekend before NaNo, but I'll be on the Breast Cancer 3 Day walk that weekend, so I'm afraid I won't have time for meetups at that point, sorry!

I think it would be great if we could continue meeting throughout the month. Tuesdays are a good day for me, but I realize they aren't for everyone, so introduce yourselves and throw some ideas out there!
----------
Readings / Writings / Events?

On Oct 29th, I'll be driving down to Milledgeville for a reading by Scott Russell Sanders, http://www.scottrussellsanders.com/ English professor and author of personal essays and the memoir "A Private History of Awe", as well as "Writing from the Center" and several other books.

I'm planning on driving down by myself no matter what, but I thought I'd put the word out in case there were any essayists or memoirists who might want a little pre-NaNo inspiration. I'd love to carpool! :-)

I thought I'd generalize the title of this thread though, in case there are any other events that are not specifically write-ins or NaNoWriMo-related that folks might be interested in.

Thanks!
Have You Donated Yet?

I just sent in my $25 donation. I'll be getting my halo soon. :D

I think we should set a goal to be the most donating part of the state! Even if you can only spare $10, you know it's going to a good cause. X3 And a little healthy competition is always fun.
Atlanta Chat Room

Last year, we (the Atlanta region) had a chat room off Yahoo, I believe, that was awesome. There were few people in it, yet we had some great word wars. Any plan to do this again? I don't know how to set this up or I would think about doing it myself.
First Time NaNo

This will be my first time participating in this exciting event to challenge my mind and writing abilities. I am curious though as how should I be preparing myself. I usually write what I feel and let my character guide me, telling me the story (makes sense?) Should I be outlining, doing character analysis, etc. Once I get on a roll, writing 50,000 words will become easy and second nature.

Any tips to a first timer will be greatly appreciated!!

Good locations for write-ins

Just in case you're not familiar with the term, a "write-in" is a gathering of NaNo-ers / WriMos for the purpose of moving further on their novels. Everyone brings their laptops or notebooks and pens and writes together in the same location for a couple of hours. It's a good chance to socialize while still being productive with regard to your word count, and a good chance to get ahead on your word count while not feeling like you're isolating yourself from the outside world. Strength in numbers, and all that. There's usually coffee.

I'd like to get a list going of potential write-in locations. We certainly don't need to nail down dates and times to have write-ins at these locations, but it'll be good to have a list of suggestions for when November gets closer.

A couple places that were either time-tested or mentioned in Sujin's "Who are you? Where are you?" thread:

Java Monkey - E. Ponce de Leon Ave. in downtown Decatur (across from Decatur MARTA station)
We've done Saturday afternoon write-ins here for a couple of years. It can be a little hard for everyone to find seats together on Saturday afternoon, but somehow we manage. Last year, we even did some in-person word wars here, which was fun.

Borders - Smyrna - Cobb Pkwy at 285
There's been a Sunday morning write-in here for the last few years. Folks usually meet upstairs at the cafe and push several tables together.

SIP - Lindbergh Center (Piedmont Ave and Lindbergh), across from Lindbergh MARTA station
New-ish coffee shop that also has tasty desserts and sandwiches. There's never been a write-in here, but I've done some writing here on my own, and the big table in the middle just begs for a NaNo event.

Where else?
----------
NaNo '06 - The Center of Gravity. 7 drafts since '06. Not dead yet.
NaNo '07 - Notes From Nowhere (YA novel, 50K)
NaNo '08 - In Other Words, I'm Anarchy (YA short story cycle)
http://weirdquietgirl.wordpress.com -thoughts on life, writing, and YA lit
