ROE's for Write-ins

Hey gang,

While I have a moment, I thought I'd post some Rules of Engagement for Write-ins... These are guidelines to help us all have a great experience!

1. HAVE FUN!
- Relax and realize that everyone else is just as worried about word count as you are. And if we're not, we're probably fibbing... There will be plenty of distractions to relieve the stress usually.

2. Respect each other and their ideas
- We all know that our nano books are perfect, pristine, and will be published on 1 December! Or maybe not. Do not criticize unless it is constructive and asked for. Helpful advice and a pat on the back go a long way towards getting those 1667 words each day.

3. Respect the head phones!
- If someone is busy writing and has their headset on, this is viewed as a "Please do not disturb" sign. Please do not bother them. Typically people will lean back and take their headsets off if they wish to take a break or converse.

4. HAVE FUN!
- Did I say this one already?

Also, if you've never done this before, you will at some point be approached by non-nanoers who are curious about people feverishly typing away. We typically have small table tents set up saying what we are, but that usually just makes them more curious. Just be nice and explain what and who we are. Or, if Addie or I are nearby feel free to point to us and we'll be glad to talk to them.

Those are the big ones that come to mind. Any veterans want to add anything?

Hey, if the 50 and older crowd gets a thread, we should have one too! We can't let ourselves be out-tecnologied by folk three times as old as us, lol. That's another thing we've got on our side, ambiguous acronyms! I ♥ AA's! Bet you won't see alt charters in the 50+ thread! In all seriousness, I know there's already a universal student thread but this is sweet because we might actually recognise eachother's schools and even meet up for a writing party somewhere! I hope people actually post on this and that we can meet other writers our age who live close by. So here it is, Dayton, enjoy!
Thread for Dayton 50 and older

Hi all,

Not to take away from the general community but I decided after last year that the older Dayton Nanos needed a way to find each other since the census is skewed toward the college to mid-career types and I would step up and make it happen so far as it depended on me.

This is my second NaNo having won last year. This year will be even more chaotic on the personal side but I still have a shoulder and a spare crying towel for anyone who is melting down over time/plot/muses/family/the world at large/the Thanksgiving turkey and anything I've overlooked.

HALFWAY PARTY

When: November 15, 2008 (cuz it's halfway through the month)

Where: The Fairborn Loft. See directions in Fairborn Loft topic

What: HALFWAY PARTY!!

The Plan:
We're going to open up the Loft at around 3 pm on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 for writing time. Around 630-7 pm we'll order pizza and vent about how the month is going; how the writing is going; and how general all-around life is going. We'll probably be there through 9 pm or so.

We'll provide soda and snacks; Bring a few bucks (probably not more than $5/person) to contribute for pizzas. We'll play some games, fill out word-count charts, and blow off some steam...come join us!
DAYTON DARES

Okay...a staple of fun postings we've had over the past couple of years...

We all live here in Dayton, and there are funny/neat/interesting things that could be used in our novels, whether they are set in Dayton in the past. What are your Dayton Writing Dares?

(I will admit to shamelessly using some of these in the past, but my last two novels were set in Dayton, this one is not.)

Here's my suggestions to get started...

The mayor's hat collection
Potholes and Orange Barrels
The nonworking fountains
Running out of salt in the middle of a snowstorm
Back Up Right Now

Remember, keep backups of your novel. Computers some times get very hungry. You don't want to put all of your word count in one file, folder, computer, or location. Spread your novel out in different files. Email it to yourself. Put it on a thumb drive you've always got. Don't let the novel go poof. Back it up right now!
Really, do it right now! I'll wait!

What is your backup plan?

My backup strategy:
Each writing session is a separate text file (created with Q10)
Each day's words are combined in to a single Word document from the separate sessions
Each day's documents are cut and pasted in to a Master word document

Each day I upload the contents of the day's Word document to both my LiveJournal and Google Docs
I add the additional text for the day to my Combined file in Google Docs
I kick off backups of my files to be stored on my server at home

Why do I do all of this?
I've had a couple of years where my master document was corrupted. If I only kept one copy of it, I would have lost my entire word count so far for the month. And I think it was near the last week of November, too. Oh, the pain.
I use computers constantly and work on them (when I have a job). I never trust them to behave. Having the different file formats can protect against virus that affect Word. There's a lot of evil macros out there. They might leave the text files alone... And uploading them elsewhere protects them in case of a disaster where I could use my computers at home...
Always late for the party...

Too late to start writing? I've had this story idea in my head for probably 4 years. My fear of it not developing into a story once I start writing has kept me procrastinating for years. Now you know the story of my life.

Someone kick me in the butt. My mom, may she Rest In Peace, isn't here to do it any more. :(

I would say that I invented procrastination, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

DANG Shirts...

For those of you that were not with us last year, we adopted the acronym DANG for the Dayton Area Nano Group. (Nanowrimo is copyrighted and therefore there are some limits on what we can do with the name, hence getting an acronym.)

This year, I really wanted to have some shirts for members. After researching several online stores I decided for our numbers it was best to produce them myself. Below are images of the prototype I made and have worn multiple times. The pictures aren't the greatest, but you can see the idea. If you can't read it, the front says DANG 08, and the back says "Be nice to me... or I'll put you in my novel..."

If someone has a different slogan they really want, I can make a few. Feel free to post ideas and if I can I will do so. I will have shirts at the three major parties and probably along at write-ins in smaller numbers or in the truck. Currently I've got black and grey shirts, in sizes L-XXL.

XL and smaller will be $7

XXL will be $8

If you need a size larger than that it will be dependent on how much I can get the shirt for. Please email me or contact me at the party and we can work out details.

If you need a smaller shirt, please let me know ahead of time and I'll make a few up. Proceeds will go towards funding our activities and anything after that will be donated to Nanowrimo.

Thanks,
Thinking about changing my own plot around

I ran out ideas after I hit the 30th page. After I defeated the awesomeness perosn. I ran out of awesome people for awhile, for now however. since my main character died. I'm going to bring her back, and then.. I have an idea.

With the new resurrection of my character, I thought about some crazy emails I got sent from nano. What would happen if the story began to write it's self in the story perspective, lets say change the perspective suddenly the author's 'pen' or computer begins to do all the writing, making a whole new warped character that constantly changes personality's, or similarities. now that it runs rampant, it begins to destroy the actual meaning of the story.

I was just thinking of how to do it, otherwise for now I'll just write more tributes to my cool friends type chapters and then move on with the main storyline for a bit. Try to invent some new challenges.
Nov 6 Daytime Write In?

I got my boss to let me take a vacation day tomorrow. (It's not that he doesn't approve, it's a matter of tracking him down to tell him you're going to do it.) And I plan to come down to Dayton and get some serious writing done. I'm so far behind!

If anyone else is playing hooky, do you want to meet up somewhere before the evening write in?

Maybe not the typical post, but eh. I'd like to share my desktop how perty it is, and how awesome it is.

:P I'd thought I'd share, I don't have one of those fancy laptops, but this computer is stored in the room of silence, mess and happiness. ^^.
Fairborn Loft and Directions

If you can get into the Google calendar that I posted (check the other topic for Events Calendar) then there are directions posted if you click on the event itself.

For those who don't have directions, I can tell you how to get there from Dayton, but I don't know Fairborn well, other than the area around the Loft.

From Dayton, you'll take 675 N

take the exit for 235 and turn left at the light. Follow 235 until you see signs for downtown Fairborn. Follow the signs to downtown Fairborn, taking a left (on Maple) and then a right (on Main) to get into downtown.

The intersection just past the library is Central Avenue. Turn left at the light (away from the library), and you'll find the Loft in the first block on the right. Look for a green awning that has the word "LAWYERS" in white lettering. Open the door and come up the stairs and you'll find us typing away!!

(all the other addresses should be mapquestable...if that's a word...I'll be checking this site and my email and nanomail all day tomorrow if anyone has any questions or problems.)
Books & Co

Is anyone going to the write-in at Books & Co at the Greene tonight? I know it's Election Day and all, so some may not be...but as for me, I simply CANNOT watch the results showing up on TV. Or the Internet. Or the radio...

Anyway, just curious! I don't mind if I'm the only one but having others there always makes it more fun! :)
Just a pop in to say hello to my region!

Ordinarily I'd say, hey who needs them! But today, at 2:01 AM in the morning EST time. I'd love to say hello to everyone in the Dayton area! I'm impressed, I would have never guessed that so many people in this area besides me would like to write. Rock on! It's quite awesome indeed.

:P I'm progressing quite well, working through the nights, and listening to my motivational music. I might feel free to share a few fragments of my little story in progress.

Considering, It fits my style and my collectivity of friends and all their personalities and experiences combined through a total amount of 3 years.

Anyway, just seeing how ya'll doing. Well I don't say ya'll, but you know, you all.
Events Calendar is UP!!

If you have a gmail or google account you can access the events calendar on the new google calendar thingywhatsit!

ALL of the current planned events have been put up on google calendar.

If you have a gmail or google account, log in, and click on calendar. (Or you can create a gmail or google account, first). Then type in "dang ohio calendar" and click "Search Public Calendar"

The third calendar listed is under an account entitled dang.ohio@gmail.com (I tried to do just dang@gmail, but it wouldn't take fewer than 6 characters.)

That's the calendar, and it's public access, so you should be able to get it. I've included address so that it's fairly easy to mapquest or otherwise map. The only exception is the Fairborn Loft, and I've included directions in the event notes.

Click on the individual events for more details!

There will be people there at the kickoff that can show you how to do this....as well as at the other write ins. And if you have trouble figuring it out, we'll help....and we'll have hard copies of the schedule and address for those who either prefer it or have an aversion to gmail.
