Attention Writers from the Northwest Florida and Southwest Georgia

I love my local chapter of the RWA in Jacksonville, Florida. The gals there rock. But with the rising cost of gas, it isn't economical to drive 3 hours to Jacksonville for a meeting--and then back home 3 hours. So, I am looking in to starting a RWA chapter here in the Tallahassee, Florida area. Published and unpublished writers are welcome.

A local RWA chapter would meet once a month, usually one Saturday a month. We may start out at every other month. Right now I am looking at the Leon County Library system to be the place where we would meet. Each meeting we would present a workshop in the morning and have a chapter meeting where members vote on issues pertaining to the chapter like holding contests, fund raising, etc. We can also do critiques for each other, or whatever the members need to advance their writing skills. Basically, the chapter is a support group for writers serious about the craft and paving the way towards publication.

It feels like a long shot, since St. Marys and Kingsland are fairly small towns, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I'm originally from Charleston, but have been living in St. Marys for 2 years this month. I'd love to meet some writers from around here! I can't be the only one...right? :)

Since I know I have to turn the region upside down and shake really hard to get any of y'all to fall out, I'm getting a head start. ;)

Where are we having it? There's a crapton of places to eat in Gainesville for just about every taste and budget. Ideally, I'd like somewhere where we can snag a room and read our novels to each other :D

When are we having it? The following weekend (1st and/or 2nd) or the weekend after that? Afternoon or evening?

Of course, all y'all from Forsyth/Cumming, Dahlonega, or even north Atlanta are welcome to offer input. We'd love to have you!

Kennesaw/Marietta Year Round Events

Ok, lots of things in this post.

First of all, how many of you are still on the forums right now? Or the rest of the year? (I'd rather not send a state-wide email, but I'm not sure what the numbers are)

Second, who plans on writing things the rest of the year?

Third, who wants to have year round writing events? Like write-ins, or readings, or whatever? (And don't forget, those of you who have been coming over, Torchwood Season Two starts at the end of January!!)

I think if we did have year round events we'd all get more done, and if we did readings or critiques or whatever we'd all become better writers, only I don't know who's interested in what or where or when. We could even do writing contests and stuff.

So, Friday night write-ins worked great for the month of November, but Friday is that big party night and we've all got plans sometimes, so I'd hate to tell everyone it's every Friday or nothing. Besides, every Friday for the rest of the year might get a little nuts, and I mean next year counts to the next Nano, not January. We could do something every other week, or every third, but do you guys want to do write-ins or just meet and talk about things? Post your ideas and we'll cobble something together.

Year Round Writers' Group

Is anyone interested in a year round writers' group? I think it would be great to have the camaraderie and support. I'd be willing to facilitate, or co-facilitate. I have been in writers' groups/workshops before, and I also have a background in teaching writing, (but I wouldn't lord it over everyone, or want to be in charge--honest!).

Woodstock/Kennesaw/Marietta Write-Ins and Events

I thought it'd be good to have ONE thread for planning and keeping track of events in our area, since the calendar doesn't seem to be working just yet. (Bwa-aa-aaa! The Evil Lieutenant strikes again, stealing the ML's job! *cackles insanely as lightning flashes across the sky*)

So, if you have an idea for a write-in location or time, can't make it to one, or want directions to an event, your post goes here.

Thus far the locations that have been kicked around--at the highly fun Towne Center Varsity get-together last Friday--are the Woodstock Coffeehouse and The Art Station - Big Shanty. Both tried-and-true locations from last year, but we need days and times (especially as I must warn the managements of both if we are to be descending upon them weekly). DISCUSS!

The next post down is the one I'll be keeping updated with dates, times, locations and directions!

I see several Gainesville area folks (howdy!), but no one from the rural areas! And I know there's a thriving writers group in Clarkesville...

Hey Guys,

It's early for me again, but I wanted to say, "HI!!!1!". Because it's that kind of morning and I'm psyched. I'm going to throw up some fliers on the KSU campus today (I've already posted one at work) and see what I can do about getting some at the local libraries.

First off, I think we need a sweet writerly name for our region so I can post something like, "Pirate Warrior Time Traveling Ninjas Who Write More Than Everyone Else" as our region heading for you in the forums when you need to see something. Give me your ideas!

Secondly, I need a headcount. For swag things. Yay! So even if you don't usually post in the threads, post here, so I know you're there. Don't worry, I can't bite you over the internet, so no fear. ^_^

Third, have you guys heard the Madonna song "Hung Up"? It's seriously awesome.

Fourth, I'm trying to rustle up some people to meet at Varsity this Friday. It's Monday morning now, and I think maybe I was a little too short notice about saying Tuesday in the other thread. Just think about that chocolate milk with ice in it, and raise your hand if you're coming, or might come, or what time.

Fifth, go forth my little WriMos and lure in more writers, and would-be writers, and people that don't even know that deep down inside they have the Great American Novel ready to burst forth like in the Alien movies... Er. Only in a much better way, and non-lethal. (Sorry, I haven't had my coffee yet.)

Sixth, if you go to the music forums they're organizing the traditional CD exchange, where you make a CD with writing music on it, and trade it with other WriMos for ultimate noveling power. I'm doing it, so it's easy for me to make more CDs if you guys want to trade too. Let me know if you do. ^_^

I only know one other person who's participating this year with me, though a few other members of Writer's Block might yet be convinced! But I think it would be really cool to have weekly write-ins at the Student Center or Starbucks/Panera Bread on Broughton during November, so come on guys, I know you're out there! :3
