I think I may have found myself following an adventure story cliche without realizing it until now. Looking over the "worst cliches" topic that's here, I think mine falls under the "find the magical item to kill the evil ruler". Is there anything I can to do not make that seem so cliche. So far I'm thinking maybe said item could just be an ordianary item. Gah, I don't know, please help and give me your advice and input.

I think the biggest thing to note is that this is a cliche because it happens in almost EVERY book, often as a side/mini story. I think that as long as you write it in a way that makes it interesting, intense, and new than its alright to use this basic plot line. Its the adventurous part of what happens between getting the quest and completeing (or not completeing) it that makes the story unique to your book.
Having the object be an everday object sounds interesting! I've always wanted to write a story where the group of adventurers realize that they've already passed by the object and have to return - then, when they get there they can't find it! After forever of grumbling and moaning over how they're finished, the bodyguard/slave/someone whos not supposed to talk much finally asks what it is that they're looking for and when told tells them that he/she picked it up the first time they were through XD
*cough cough* Ya, thats my contribution.
Good luck!
