Ashley Shelby loves to write, but something she loves just as much is teaching and coaching others on their writing projects.
Shelby, a local author and former Penguin Books acquisitions editor, launched the Mill City Writers' Workshop last month at 6 Sixth Ave. N. in Hopkins.
Shelby, the daughter of WCCO news anchor Don Shelby, grew up in Hopkins. She lived in New York for eight years, where she worked at Penguin.
She is also a published author herself. Her book, "Red River Rising: The Anatomy of a Flood and the Survival of an American City," about the catastrophic floods in the Red River Valley in the winter of 1997, was published in 2004.
Shelby moved back to Hopkins two years ago and decided to open a writers' workshop. She said that when you are writing your own material, you don't get the rewarding payoff until you are finished, which tends to take a long time.
"Teaching is an instant reward," she said. "I love that instant gratification."

Maybe this is something the NaNo writers' group would be interested in? Or maybe it's a place to keep in mind when November rolls around? The website for the workshop is www.millcitywriters.com.

I saw your comment (this is Ashley Shelby of Mill City Writers' Workshop) and wanted to let you know that I am a member of NaNo (2006--though my excerpt seems to have disappeared). I gave birth in 2007 and was too overwhelmed to get on deadline. But I'm back! Once November rolls around, I'll be offering a workshop at Mill City Writers' Workshop (www.millcitywriters.com) that will coincide with NaNo. It'll be a short-term, inexpensive little novel-writing workshop for NaNo members. I'll post relevant details on my website as November nears.

Well, congrats on the kid. I just got a little crib midget myself...
*ponders* Maybe we could even work out a stop on the write-in tour? I am definitely putting that together again this year. Plenty of time to think about it.

Hey, Callipygian, great news about the new little writer in the house. Boy? Girl? Puppy? I remember you saying there was a reason you were moving... hmmm....
And BookOfMoons, aka Ashley -- FUN! It will be great to have you hanging out with us during NaNo '08. And I am psyched that you're giving workshops ... hope to attend one some time.
November's a long ways away, and I am NOT even attempting Script Frenzy this year. Saving all my brain cells for a great NaNo idea.

Congrats CallipygianKing! How does having the little on affect your writing time? Maybe a lot more midnight scribbling. I know that was true for me.
I look forward to meeting everyone!
