If you were to die suddenly in an accident... and then discover your spirit self has near-omnipotence for a period of time, then what would you do? You're still dead, but without "crossing over."

[You can affect anything you want (whether it's kicking a bucket over or killing a murderer). Everything happens in the present, with time always passing. You can be visible or invisible at will (you've left your body and family and friends learn that you're dead, but you can manifest in front of anyone you want). No omnipresence, but you can teleport anywhere. No omniscience, but you can learn anything the old-fashioned way. And, after about a week, you have to "cross over", just like everyone else (with no cheating allowed on this point =D)]

You can make a big impact, change the world, or just keep it to just saying good-bye to loved ones. You can simply float around and watch how friends and family grieve for you, or you can go out and see the world. End wars or start wars. Whatever you think you'd actually do.

Thanks :)

CHANGE THE ENTIRE WORLD SOOOOOOO MUCH.

Yes, but in a good way. So like, a working utopia.

And all these huge buildings and awesome stuff. Like, I would let my imagination go completely free, and build these huge tributes to everyone I admire.

And then, I would make myself be remembered foreveeer by building something(s) incredibly awesome. Like, maybe a huge solid gold statue.

Then, for the next week before I cross over. Probably won't tell my friends and families I'll have to leave in a week, since that'll be too awkward and emotional. Yep.

Kill people.

Seriously.

Fred Phelps would be the first name on my list.

The problem with mega-superpowers, IMO anyway, is that everything is in such balance. Ideally, I'd like to create a utopia, but utopia means a perfect world, ergo, perfect people. Cool on the surface, but in truth, rather bland and doesn't leave any room for real people. So...that's out.

Then there's my wicked evil side that would want to eliminate my "people that the world would be better off without" list (not that it's written, just in my head). Problem here is that I wouldn't be sure of any consequences that could happen as a result of this (even eliminating the "going to hell factor"). For example, what about their children and other family members? While the world at large may be better off without them, are their friends and family in a better position because of them? Yeah, I'll pass on this one too.

Spying on folks while I'm invisible? Ugh, sounds like I'm taking over either the role of Big Brother...or that creepy guy in jr. high who told me that he wanted to be invisible just so he could spy on the girl's locker room. No thanks.

Manipulating the laws so I could have my kids go with who I wanted them to instead of it being a birthright issue? Tres tempting, yes indeed. But what kind of long term consequences would this have? Would this make it so no birth parent has the right to their own children if one of them dies or otherwise becomes incapacitated? Would this assure that there's an even more convoluted process in the court system where no one knows who any child "belongs to"? It's always the children who lose out in stuff like this, so, again, I'll have to pass.

In the end, I'd probably just travel around the world saying my good-byes. This would work, invisibility for example, would assure that I could see my buddy in Iraq without having to worry about pesky military guards, etc. I'd also be able to blip in on a few folks on that "ick" list just to scare the crap outta them. Yeah, that would be fun. Mwa ha ha.

Which is exactly the impetus for the new novel I'm starting. Essentially, a cosmic ****-up accidentally imbues a normal joe bloke (well, jane bloke) with temporary god-like powers--and makes full use of 'em. The rest of the story's dealing with the inevitable mess >=)

Since the idea came first, it's only after I started storyboarding that I got to thinking what I would actually do in such a situation. It's a fun concept, figured I'd throw it out there for you guys for any additional ideas (I've definitely a good base to start with *evil grin*).

mozougly: thanks, i'll look into it...

Honestly?

It's like the "If you had a time machine, would you alter events in the past, risking changes in the future?" debate.
If I had a time machine, I would not. I do not take risks.

So, in this scenario, I most likely wouldn't really change the world. I might, however, go to see loved ones and comfort them and subtly help them with things like financial problems, etc. Then I think I'd travel some. See Italy and Scotland and Japan and some other places I'm probably forgetting, you know?

That's probably pretty boring for a novel though.
