20 dollars* the amount of times you ship your manuscript
3 dollars for SASE's stamps.
10 dollars for the SASE envelope.
200 dollars for the toner.
100 dollars for the paper.
2 years writing editing, producing book.
100 set of rejections.
15% to your agent.
500 dollars for marketing your own book and doing book signings.
price of your own book*30-40 copies
Hotel fees, 100 dollars per night.
phone calls to book stores-- 70 dollars (a month)
business cards 200 dollars.
CDs with your book on it 30 dollars.
Going to conventions to promote your book 200 dollars
Jet lag...
Being asked where the bathroom is...
Getting critics feedback...
Getting reader's feedback...
Begging for reviews....
Never being able to make returns on your investment into trying to get published...
--priceless.

But then if you're into writing to get money, you're in the wrong profession. Consider this dark humor. ^_^

Although if you get a book contract, that's considered good money.. but you need to lose money to gain it first.

If anyone wants to add to this list or even make something to cheer people up while they are editing, go ahead. Yes, this will help you procrastinate while you're editing your book and thinking why did I write this crap?

FYI

Lots of reputable agents accept email queries these days. In fact, many of them prefer it.

You won't have to waste a dime on postage for querying, for the SASE's or for sending a copy of your manuscript unless an agent actually requests to see it.

So far as the other expenses mentioned, if you're a self-published author then ... uh, yeah, you're going to spend out the wazzooo trying to get your book out there for people to see (unless you use Lulu just to make it available).

Thanks.

Actually, all the promotional stuff Kimberly listed is about right for a published author. Unless you are a NYT bestseller, the publisher will do very little to promote your book. That's up to you as a new author. Except the conventions are a little higher. LOL And most publishers will give you promo copies of your book but a limited amount. It should be in your contract.
