Attention Bay Area Wrimos!

We wanted to make sure you all knew about the third-annual NaNoWriMo Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon. This noir-themed noveling event will be held from 5 PM to 11 PM on Sunday, November 22 at the beautiful <a href="http://www.juliamorganballroom.com/"target="_blank">Julia Morgan Ballroom in downtown San Francisco!

All you need to do to raise $200 in sponsorships through GiftTool from family and/or friends by November 18. And if you raise $300 or more you can bring a guest!

Not only is this a great chance for us to see the faces of those who support us, but all proceeds from the evening make our programs possible, including the classroom-based Young Writers Program. Come show your support this year by helping us reach our $25,000 fundraising goal! The more money you raise, the more tickets you'll get for our prize raffle. Plus, the top fundraisers will walk home with one of our grand prizes. Check out our Night of Writing Dangerously Write-A-Thon 2009 page to find out what this year’s grand prizes include.

Don’t miss your chance to come write with us for six hours surrounded by San Francisco’s city lights and 200 fellow NaNo-novelists typing frantically alongside you!

Already shopping for my Noir costume,

Please Donate to NaNo!

Hey NaNo Folks-
Please consider donating to NaNo if you haven't already!

I don't know about you- but the amount of money I've spent in coffeeshops already this month while working on NaNo is already pretty high- how ridiculous for that amount to dwarf what I've donated to the org. that puts this event on in the first place! ( = I'm going to donate a little more today.)

If you've been having fun at all this November, and if you think some magic's been unleashed in your life thanks to the kind people over at Office of Letters & Lights, please tithe them something.

I'm someone who NEVER gives money to organizations, but since I gave my first $10 to OLL, I really do feel a greater ownership and sense of engagement with all things NaNo. To quote The Simpsons: it embiggens the soul.

That's the real secret of tithing: you actually get more back that you put in.

Hope everyone's doing great-

Look at us! Still in the game! We're all moving, steadily, towards the finish line. Who knew we could commit to 2+ weeks much less a whole month. One word at a time we continue to honor this commitment to ourselves. We deserve a pat on the back and a huge hug!
Just curious. How have you honored yourself today for being so awesome? I took a long, hot bath.
trading reads after 12/1?

The question of what happens after November ends is a personal matter and different people have all different approaches, from very private, to very public, to the people who are already doing nano in the form of public blog posts in the first place.

With all deference to writers who want to keep it very private, or are too busy writing right now and don't want to think about it yet: I want to trade readthroughs and some criticism on the November work while it still has that quality of punk rock and that "JUST GO!"

If anyone else feels that way either based on how things are looking from 11/21, or later on, nanomail me, or my regular email backwards is moc tod trahrac ta nivek
Saturday 11/21 write-in at Dolores Park

Hey everyone!

I will be writing in dolores park on Saturday (11/21) morning (9:30 am until my hands get tired, probably 12ish) if it's not raining. I would love some company. I will be the little asian girl with a mac, a multicolored blanket and a folded paper that says write-in national novel writing month. I'll try to steak out a space somewhere close to the playground.

And if it is raining, then I will be writing in Bittersweet cafe on Fillmore between California and Sacramento (2123 Fillmore Street)

Hope to see you there!
Looking for Wed, Thursday 11-18 write-ins.

Wednesday

I'm going to be downtown Wednesday evening until 7 and am looking for a write-in with an easy route from the Flood building (i.e. Powell and Market). By easy, I mean one bus connection or less that'll get me there by 7:30 and will be open until 10pm.

If I can't find anything here by then to which I could commit, I'll head over to Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (no bus connection, open until 10pm, but usually scant seating).

Thursday

I'll be around Oak and Stanyan (the beginning of the Panhandle) around 5ish, looking for a place to settle in and write until late evening. It's a short skip to one of my usual Richmond haunts if I don't find a group.

Expect me to post here a confirmation of my intended hauntings before I go.

Inner/Outer Sunset Cafe Meetups?

I'm a schoolteacher in my other life, so I'm going to be off all this coming week (yay Thanksgiving holidays!). Anyone want to meet in a cafe in the Inner or Outer Sunset (I'm at 23rd and Irving, kind of in the middle) during the day and get our write collectively on? Comment yay or nay, with dates and times you'd be interested, and then we'll make arrangements. Me? I'm pretty much available all day most days, it's just my evenings I want to keep free for the (non-NaNoing) fiance.
Twitter Word Sprints

Hey, if anyone is following @NaNoWriMo on twitter, there have been nightly word sprints that past few nights. The next one starts at 9 p.m., for 40 minutes, I assume. It's a great way to flat-out write, especially if your word count needs a good boost like mine. People are posting their sprint word counts and a snippet on twitter. It's great fun, if you like torturing yourself.

Hope to see you on Friday in the Haight!

IMPORTANT Q re NOWD!

Hello all! I'm bringing this up again because time is of the essence. Well, with less than two weeks of Nano left, you know that. But since the Night of Writing Dangerously is Sunday, time is REALLY of the essence.

If you have raised $300, you can bring a guest. If you don't have someone in mind, please consider that there are people who would LOVE to go, but haven't raised enough money to do so. If you could offer to bring someone, please post that here ASAP.

If you REALLY want to go, don't be shy, please say so here so that we can finesse some writerly hook ups.

Remember the stated fundraising deadline is tomorrow, Wednesday the 18th. And there are only 200 tickets total and you MUST RSVP for yourself and your guest. No just showing up.

Let's make this happen folks!
What do you do when your novel goes off course?

I stumbled across this in my inbox this morning:

http://io9.com/5406901/what-do-you-do-when-your-novel-goes-off-course

Authors Scott Westerfeld, Brad Meltzer, Cherie Priest and Rudy Rucker talk about how they fix the seemingly unfixable. NaNoWriMo even gets a shout out!/
Tuesday Late Night Write-In

Hi all,

I got a ticket from a friend to attend The City Arts and Lectures Barbara Kingsolver Event this Tuesday (tomorrow night). I was thinking that afterwards, I would try to get some writing down while I'm already out in The City.

Anyone want to do a late night write-in? I am planning to head to the 24-hour Starbucks on California in Laurel Heights, unless someone has a better idea, preferably that involves alcohol. I'm not sure what time the lecture event ends, but I'm guessing I'll be there around 10 p.m. or so. I'll probably stay until about 11:30 or 12 (I know, I'm a pansy).

WithAnticipation - I can't figure out how to add this to the google calendar - I don't think I have permission?

Hope some other WriMos can make it - at least come by and taunt me for my lack of word count.

----------

USA :: California :: San Francisco

Google Calendar

Hey SF Wrimos! Fearless leader here - the one who's been hiding under the desk because of her skinny word count. As you can see, we now have a place to post Write-Ins. Anyone can do it. Just click on "google calendar" and then, when you are taken to the calendar itself, click on "create event". Feel free to add any Write-Ins that you are hosting. Under "What" I would suggest putting the cross streets or the area of the city for that. The "Where" can contain the name of the cafe. Then click on start time and end time (the ending time is less important). Then include under "Description" I would give bus info/parking info (If you know it) and any other info you think is important like WiFi, outlets, closing time, killer mochas etc.

You guys have been really functioning like a community and that's so important for Nano; for people to know there are others out there sweating over an overheated laptop. We're ALMOST at the half way point - can you BELIEVE it???? So this is a great time to be getting more Write-Ins on the calendar. I will try to attend some Write-Ins where I can hang with those of you I haven't been able to meet yet. See you soon!

And if I can answer any questions, just let me know.

Write In: The usual Tuesday deal at Enchantè

I'll be at Cafè Enchantè from 3:30pm-ish to closing (around 10pm) making efforts towards catching up.

Evidently the NaNo word counter thinks my count is ~400 words fewer than my text editor does. 'tupid counters.

My usual descriptors
~ big guy (6'2) with glasses, pony tail and headband.
~ small netbook, external keyboard
~ A coffee clutch (around my coffee cup) marked "NaNo"

and the secret sign (as to thwart impostors*)

~ a "NY" binky near my coffee cup.

One or all, I'll see you there!

U.

* is the female version an impostrix? Since we have dominatrices and terminatrices, I'd think it could carry on to other Latin roles, i.e. Senator / Senatrix, Negotiator / Negotiatrix, Navigatrix, Executrix, Electrix, Prosecutrix and so on.

----------
Frequent haunts (San Francisco)
Cafè Enchantè, Geary @ 26th Ave.
Coffee Bean @ Market, 3rd & 4th streets next to Four Seasons
Peets, Fillmore @ Sacramento
Peets, Van Ness @ Bush
Peets, Mission @ 3rd Street
On The Corner Cafè, Divisadero @ Oak St.

Shout out for sitting down to write today!

Hi guys, confession to make, I am sooo relieved when I go into the San Francisco region and there are no shout outs for numbers reached! Maybe we could have a shout out for all of us who sat down and wrote today. Sometimes that's all we can do and sometimes the numbers don't reflect the amount of effort it took for an individual to get comfortable enough to let the words flow. So anyone with ten words or more deserves a shout out! Ten words, maybe a sentence, possibly a paragraph. Way to go all of us. Congratulations for showing up to the page.
