Heya Wrimos!

Whether this is your first or tenth year competing, welcome to National Novel Writing Month! We're halfway through October, and with fifteen days (and some change) to go until that first venerable midnight write-in, I thought I'd send out an email blast to say hello, introduce myself (as well as Michelle, an ML from another region that's joined us this year as my co-ML), and give you the low down on what you need to know going into this auspicious month of insane creativity.

My name is Tim (otherwise known as TimSimms on the Chicago regional forum) and I'm one of your two Municipal Liaisons (ML's). An ML's job is to make sure you make it through November intact, including organizing events, keeping you motivated, distributing the much-anticipated annual NaNo swag, and much, much more. Joining me this year from Ottawa, Ontario and Iowa City, IA is Michelle (who can be found on the regional forum as Limmenel). She's been doing NaNo for seven years, five of which she's been an ML. Together we hope to get your creative juices flowing (as well as have a lot of fun meeting and schmoozing with you all at our write-ins and outings).

The local Chicago NaNoWriMo chapter, called ChiWriMo, is a strong top-ten global region that prides itself on high overall word counts each year as well as generous donations to NaNo national. To learn more about ChiWriMo, head over to our website at http://www.chiwrimo.org.

With that housecleaning out of the way, let's get to the fun stuff - what you can look forward to this month! Here's a sample of what's to come:

• A Pre-November gathering (organized by longtime ChiWriMo displacedbeatnik) to the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum on Saturday, October 25th to get those creative juices flowing. For those who don't know, this is a free museum the Chicago Tribune underwrites about the First Amendment and freedoms in the United States and the world in general. (For more information on the event, go to the forum thread - http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3022603)

• A midnight write-in both online on our ChiWriMo website chatroom as well as at the (now) 24-hour Starbucks at Clark and Belmont in East Lakeview. If you plan to attend, be sure to buy a Starbucks card and register it on their website so you can receive two hours of free wifi! We'll be kicking off NaNo at the stroke of midnight with a couple of hours of writing and fun!

• A baked goods & bagel brunch kick off on 11/1 from 11-1. Be sure to RSVP on the regional forum on the Kick Off thread! (You can go directly there via this link: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3027518)

• Weekly Monday night write-ins at our partner/sponsoring organization Open Books (just steps off the Chicago Brown Line train station). Also see below about an exciting partnership-addition we're initiating with them this year as a thank you for all their NaNo-licious sponsorship. (For more information on the Open Books/ChiWriMo partnership & events, please visit http://www.open-books.org/events/nanowrimo/index.php)

• Weekly prizes for those who attend write-in sessions. Some of the prizes include tickets to see ComedySportz, gift cards to Women & Children First Bookstore and Lou Malnati's Pizza, a Robert Jeffrey package including hair products and free style/cut, and more!

And that's just for starters!

Additionally, we're taking our long-standing partnership with Open Books to the next level this year after all the support they've given us in the past. Keep your eyes peeled for information about the rollout of our Virtual Book Drive (VBD), which will enable you to make a direct impact on the Chicago community. Dani Brzozowski from Open Books will be assisting in the VBD. [STICKY] Write-in Calendar Requests

Are you hosting a write-in this November? That's awesome of you! Here's what you need to do to maximize your time and resources:

Be sure you've downloaded a table tent from the ChiWriMo website if you're meeting in a public place. That way, it'll be easier for people to find you. You can go directly to the writer resources download page by clicking here.

Post a request to this thread to have your write-in information added to the ChiWriMo Calendar.

Please be sure to include the date(s), start/end time(s), address (and location if it's not a residence), and any other pertinent information. If you have questions please contact Michelle or Tim using the information listed at the top of the forum.

As a side note, please try not to schedule write-ins in the city on the nights of the official write-ins (primarily, Monday nights). We have a goal of having as many wrimos in one place and time as possible! (Plus, we have prizes and giveaways people might miss out on!)

Just as I was last year, I'll be your Municipal Liaison (ML) to help guide you all through the turbulent November currents, helping you get through to December 1st. In a change from last year though, we now have a second ML joining us from Ottawa, Ontario: Limmenel. After MLing for three years there, she brings us all of her ML expertise and awesomeness. 2008 Events Calendar

Another change this year is the regional calendar system. Whereas last year we had that clunky regional calendar at the bottom of the forums, this year we are switching over officially to the Google Calendar system that ChiWriMo has used since the end of last year's NaNo. Just click on the link at the top of the forum to get to the calendar or click here.

ChiWriMo

ChiWriMo is the local Chicago NaNoWriMo chapter. We participate in events year round outside of NaNo, and have a lot of fun.

Our website (http://www.chiwrimo.org) has a lot of resources, including links to our social networking pages, Flickr pictures of ChiWriMo events, and writer resources. Also included is a portion of the site where you can donate to the local chapter to help fund local events (like food at the beginning and ending parties) - as well as our CafePress shop with ChiWriMo merchandise. Dancing Cows = Gift Cards!

As you may or may not have heard, seamlessly inserting a dancing cow into your novel this year will earn you a $5 Starbucks card.

It can be a real cow, a guy in a cow suit - your choice. Here are the rules you'll need to abide by to qualify:

(1) Seamlessly incorporate the scene into your novel. That means no "and then a dancing cow came by" in the middle of a scene just to stick it in.

(2) You must attend the TGIO party. The date will either be 12/6 or 12/13 - we're still working out the fine details on that.

(3) You must bring an excerpt from your novel to the TGIO, and it must be that scene. Feel free to bring other scene too if you want to share them.

(4) You must post in this thread so I know to bring your card.

Good luck to all, and I'm looking forward to reading your dancing cow scenes!

North Shore write-in?

Are there any other lost north shore suburbanites who would like to partake in a write-in closer to home? Perhaps Borders in Highland Park or Evanston, Barnes and Noble in Deerfield, or a cafe somewhere?

I know there were a few write-ins for the Lake County area last year, so I figure we should try again sometime this year too. Hopefully, it'll have more success than last time.

So, how about the Borders on Grand ave. on the 23th (Sunday?), say around noon or so? There's a cafe in there with, I think, some free internet access. The baristas are nice enough and it has a pretty good atmosphere if you try to miss the debate crowds that come later. I'll have a notebook or something that I'll be writing in, and you'll probably be able to recognize me with the big hair and all.

So, anyone wanna come?

Write Or Die!

OK, have you all heard of this tool? It's so AWESOME!

You can find it here: http://lab.drwicked.com/writeordie.html

You just set the word amount you want as your goal, then click the mode you want, then set the grace period, and then set the time limit you want. Then you click "write", and away you go!

I set it for two thousand words, with a two hour time limit. I finished the two thousand words EXACTLY, and did it in just over an hour!

Give it a try if you keep running into writing blocks! It's really worth a try!

Nooooooooo!! (A Reminder to All)

The last few days have been a NaNoWrimo-er's worst nightmare.

I tried turning on my laptop this weekend, and I got the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. I rebooted, loaded my computer in safe mode, and promptly emailed a backup copy of my NaNo to myself. Whew. After another reboot, I was unable to get my OS to load at all, and realizing that my laptop was likely completely hosed, I thanked the writing gods that I had managed to back up my NaNo in time.

Then I tried to load it up this morning.

"The file is corrupted and cannot be opened."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Almost 40k words gone, just like that. Back up your NaNo, RIGHT THIS SECOND, if you have not been consistently doing so. Yes, you! Why are you still reading this post?

For the sake of the Word War team, I'm going to start over and try and hit 50k in the next two weeks, but if I had been backing up my work all along this wouldn't have been an issue. Don't become a casualty of the BSOD. Back up your work.

Okay, that title is... possibly misleading. Sorry for anyone who clicked this thread looking for superhero cephalopods or whatever.

At one of the Sunday write-ins at Starbucks, someone (Ann, maybe?) left a green power squid. It's one of those awesome shiny ones for plugging computers into.

Anyways, WHO DOES THIS BELONG TO? I want to make sure it gets back to its owner!

(ps, if you can actually write a heroic squid into your novel, you're awesome!)

If you were (or are) at tonight's write-in, you recieved a $100 Gift Certificate for the Sangria Restaurant and Tapas Bar! And, as you may have noticed, said certificate expires on the 21st! ALSO, you must use it in a group of four people or more.

Who's up for some tapas (and sangria) this week? I'm thinking Thursday night, maybe 7 PM?

The coupon specifically says that it's "Valid for all menu items any night of the week", so come and eat some awesome food, maybe have a drink or two (if you're of age), and don't pay a penny!

Sunday Write In?

Here there Sundays are really wide open for me (except the 2nd as I will be in Alabama:0). I was wondering if anyone else was interested in a Sunday afternoon/early evening write-in? I am near North Center/Lake view/Roscoe Village area. I knwo there are a few cafe type places with free wifi nearby such as Red Eye on Lincoln etc... Let me know and lets make it happen. I can host as well under 10 pp if you don't mind furry pets. I do have wireless and a pretty spacious place.

Statewide Illinois Write-in on 11/22! RSVP Required!

After conferring with the other Illinois ML's, we've all come up with a great idea - a statewide IL write in!

It will take place on Saturday, 11/22 from 1-4pm at the Warrenville City Hall. Since the location has a space limit, we have to require an RSVP to attend. (The limit is 87 people.) Show up early though - we'll have a lunch for those attending beginning at 12:15pm!

For those who don't drive, there is a Metra stop about 9 minutes (4.1 miles) south of the City Hall. We'll make arrangements to shuttle folks--please note if you will be taking the train.

If you have a car and can fit people - or if you need a ride out, post in this thread!

Missed the Train: An Alternative Write-In Proposal for the Downtrodden

So, this morning, my alarm goes off at ten, but I've been awake most of the night. Not writing, really. Mostly just dealing with CRAP. I go to put my contacts in and discover that I've torn the last left one in doing so. So, I'm definitely going to be half blind for about a month until I can get new ones. I throw on some clothes (read: pajama bottoms opaque enough to cover my butt and a sweatshirt) and head towards the Belmont station for the write-in I've been pumped about since the idea came up. To my great dismay, after a long trek, the SLOWEST TRAIN IN CTA HISTORY delivers me at 11:01 (and 36 seconds) and there's no one on the southbound platform. I waited. Looked around. Walked around. Watched two trains back home pass before I finally hung my head and went back over to the northbound platform (where I may or may not have stamped my feet and cried while waiting twenty minutes for a train home).

This month has been pretty much the epitome of suck for me. Personally, professionally, academically, emotionally... whatever. The only thing that doesn't suck so bad right now is my word count and that's just because I have to do SOMETHING while I'm not sleeping.

I tell this story to say this: I have Tuesday off. THIS Tuesday, I have decided that I am going to spend the ENTIRE day under the influence and creating a masterpiece (or a mess) with words. Hemingway did it, right? Not that I'm saying I'll be creating anything so historically relevant... but I don't want to deal with life and I'm going to take it out on my novel while burning Nag Champa and playing nineties alternative music.

If anyone else is feeling a little nihilistic, depressed, irritable, and/or generally bad, you're welcome to join in. Misery LOVES company! Bring your own poison of choice and a way to write. I have free wifi if you can get your computer through network security at Loyola (which I can totally help with). If you want to PM me, I can give you my cell number and directions to my apartment (which I will totally clean and stock with cookies and whatnot.)

Setting your novel in Chicago?

Just curious, hoping to spark a bit of conversation here maybe since the regional forum is pretty quiet. Is anyone setting their novel in Chicago this year?

I'm still pretty new to the city, but I've decided to set my novel here, since I love the city so much and I think it'll be great to be able to do hands-on research on places. I think I'm going to set my novel in the northern-ish part of the city, with cameos from a few of my favorite places in town. Maybe near Loyola, so if anyone lives up there and is willing to let me pick their brain for details, I'll love you forever!

Anyways, who else is setting their novel in the Windy City?

Black Friday Coffee Crawl

I have a proposed plan, but wonder what everyone thinks before I have it officially posted to the calender.

I felt like 2 hours would take too long over the course of the day, and only one hour wouldn't be quite enough to settle in and get writing done. Panera is in the middle so we can all grab a decent bite to eat in the middle.

The proposed itinerary is below with a link to a Google Map with the locations. Please let me know what you think; I want to try and post it to the calender by the end of this weekend, so now's the time for voices to be heard!

Throwing Down the Gauntlet!

It looks like a friendly rivalry has started among the top 6-7-ish regions on the Global Word Count Scoreboard.

In fact, there's even been bragging about surpassing Chicago and other regions invading with their word-war-iness.

I say we challenge them all - and try to come out in the top three this year. We may not be able to beat powerhouse Seattle - but I say everyone else is fair game.

I'm asking everyone in the Chicago region - signed up for a word war or otherwise - make Chicago proud globally for the second time this month. Get your write on and let's throw down the gauntlet against these other regions who think they can bring us down!

We may be number six tonight, but I say we show them we're not out of the game!

As I'm writing, I hear a loud thump and a crush of metal. I literally feel my building shake.

I went out in front and saw that someone in a white SUV had crashed into the fence in front of my apartment.
I didn't think about it until just now, but on the trajectory that the SUV was heading... if they hadn't hit the fence, they would have hit the corner of the building where I was writing.
Anyway, the guy said that it was his girlfriend who was driving, and tried to talk me out of calling anyone about it. The next thing I know, he's driving away.
