It was suggested that the party be on Sunday, December 2 in the afternoon around 2 pm. There is a PT's that is fairly centrally located. Please respond in some way, whether it be good or bad. It's frustrating not getting very many responses. There are 266 people signed up in Las Vegas. Please let your voice be heard. RSVP if you can or cannot make it.

Here's the address:

I'm done!

Not done with the novel, not by a long shot, but I've broken 50,000!

Now, I have two things I need to do.

First, I need to pass out in bed and catch up on the sleep I missed.

Second, I need to put my nose to the grindstone and get back to work on school. I haven't suffered too much, but I've got a lot of papers coming up that need to be done. (1000 words, pshaw! I can do that in an hour...)
Something Different for end of month get together

I realize I got started late in the local NANA due to being out of town, but upon my arrival back I could not wait for the get togethers expecting meetings like last years. During the many posts about meetings it has come to my attention that many meetings do not work for people's schedules, due to work, children or like me a mother now living with them.

Last evening at a small NANO get together we discussed putting something together that is convenient for more people. So here is the proposal. While I have no problem showing up at 2 for the end of the month party and hanging out until late evening so everyone can stop by, most people are not able to do that.

So what is best for everyone on Dec 2nd? Afternoon, early evening, evening etc?

Last years party was a blast held in a member's home, with a DJ, a pitch in and the member's wife a chef. The evening was spent laughing and having a great time. I would love to have that kind of camaraderie again. It doesn't have to be in someone's home, but just the laughter and fun is what is needed.

I hope I am not stepping on toes here, but trying to maximize the end of month party so more of us are able to attend. If I have to I will sit there all day and into the night, but am hoping for something that works for the majority of us.

Suggestions, ideas, time frame? Anyone
----------

Tonight's Tuesday Night Meeting

Tonight meaning Tuesday, November 20th, btw.

I won't be able to make the weekly meeting at the Barnes and Noble located on Rainbow and Lake Mead tonight. We're flying out for the holidays tomorrow (NO! NOT THE IN-LAWS!) and I need tonight to make sure that everything is ready. Laura can't make it either, so don't be surprised if you show up and nobody else is there. Sorry! But we'll both be there next week!

I'm an ML from out of town and wanted drop in on your forum because I'll be spending a long Thanksgiving weekend in Vegas (Wed-Sun).

I'm hoping you guys can point me toward some writer (and vegan) friendly spots to type at that are easily accessible from the strip. I'd really appreciate it. Also, if any of you all are interested there will be three Californian Wrimos transplanting ourselves to work on our novels and we would love to meet and write with you if you're game.

Hey everyone. I'm pretty pleased with myself, I rolled over that 25k mark yesterday! I have never written anything that was 25000 words long, let alone write it in 13 days! I just hope I can keep going at this pace! Today was the first day I'm not going meet my writing goal. Partly out of celebration and partly from sheer exhaustion. How is everyone else doing?

For the last couple of weeks a couple of us have been meeting there after work hours, at about 7ish. I don't know if anyone but myself is going tonight, but if you want to come and join me for a laugh, a write in or just a cup of coffee, I will be there about 7ish with my laptop, my iPod and pulling my hair out. I will have a sign that says NANO. So look for me!
Weekend Meeting - ReJavaNate?

I do think we should designate two days a week to meet. If people want to have an east side and west side location that is fine. If people want to plan and meet on alternate day other than two designated that's fine. It's all about getting the words on the screen/paper. I will be at the Panera every Thursday evening. I think ReJavaNate could be a good location for the weekend meeting. Is Saturday or Sunday better? I am leaning toward Sunday afternoon/evening, but I'm open to Saturdays if they are more convienent.

Please respond Saturday or Sunday and if you have another location in mind or if ReJavaNate is acceptable.
Starting over?

Hi everyone! So clearly this is my first year participating, and I am hoping that you all might be able to give me a bit more insight.....

Somewhere in the course of the first week, the story felt stagnant and the writing forced. Then late last night, I had inspiration for a brand new plot which leaves so many open avenues for me. Seeing as this is the beginning of the second week, is it worth starting over or should I just keep going with the original plot?

Thanks in advance for your input!
Tips for getting through November

I just received this from Kate, an ML in another region I belong to (okay, to which I belong ... stop editing, damn it!). Thought it might be nice if some of the vets could share with us newbies their tips for surviving NaNoWriMo. I already thought of slippers and a warm sweater. What else comes in handy? (Note below: combini = convenience store)

====

Hey guys! How goes the plotting?

While you're gearing up to write, let's not forget some other important things....

(1) Do the laundry and clean BEFORE November starts. Fortunately most of us live in shoeboxes. (2) Get snacks and cocoa to keep on hand! A combini run will disrupt your flow! (3) Invest in a USB key to back up your novel or carry it from place to place. The last thing I want is people giving up mid-nano because their laptop died! (4) Explain to your friends and family that you will drop off the face of the earth for a month so no one back home thinks you died.
(5) Take a good hard look at your social calendar and block out writing time NOW. Make it a priority! (6) Plan what you're going to do to reward yourself; new notebooks? a special order from Flying Pig? Sleep?
(7) Take time to introduce yourself on the forums so we know you're out there... please? :)
(8) Update your Nanowrimo profile on the site so we know who you are; if your e-
mail address has changed, be sure to update it,! Though if you're mail has changed, you're not going to be getting this...hmm...maybe I just typed that out for nothing.

If you've got more tips, come on and share them in the forums!

Love and Peace, y'all!
Kate

----------

TajLV - 50,000 words in 43,200 minutes or bust!

Killing off characters

Here's a doozy.

It seems to me that I have no problem killing off characters overall. I mean... I killed three off in The Blademaster, and I killed one off in Willowdale. I don't know yet of one is going to get killed off in THe Age of Darkness (I have one I'd LOVE to kill off, I just don't see it happening.... sadly, I think she'll be a thorn in my side for as long as I'm writing this series)

The question is... how do you, as a writer, know when to kill a character off, and have you killed any off during the course that your writing? If you have... how did you do so, and how did you enjoy the experience?
Writing through a nightmare

I am unsure if I will be able to make any meetings this month due to the nightmare of my life at the moment. To be honest I am unsure how far I will get this month but I am going to try.

The reason for missing meetings is that I am currently in Indianapolis dealing with family issues that would make for an unbelievable book.

So here is the quick condensed version of my live since last November.

In January I began having serious health issues, had surgery in May to correct to problem. The day before the surgery my mother broke her hip so as soon as the doctor cleared me I was off on the road trip to Indiana to help get her settled. So from the end of July until the middle of September I was here and then thought all was well and went home.

Ten days later my oldest daughter called and her husband and her were having major issues so I was back off to Indiana. A week later got that taken care of and was about to go home when my aunt called and there were problems with my mother. Took mom to the hospital for four days to find out that my mother has had numerous mini-strokes that have caused extensive damage to her brain so her short term memory is damaged so she will never be able to live on her own again. However she is not in need of full nursing home care. So, it appears she will be moving to Vegas with me once the rehab is complete. Once that was settled and again it appeared I could head home, the daughter who was having problems with the hubby was here with me dealing with my mom, and hubby decided to empty their house, empty bank accounts, take the ten month old baby and head off for parts unknown.

Wait not done yet.. I figured that legally we had a good standing to get the baby back only to be told by the back wood police department in Evansville, Indiana ( where they live), that because they are married both have equal right to the baby and he can go anywhere he wants until the courts decide otherwise. Next stop the Warrick County Courthouse to file needed papers. Sounds simply but oh no, she was told she can not file custody or divorce papers without an address to have him served. Since we have no clue where he is that can't happen. Not to mention her rent is due and bills are due and he took every dime.

Figured we would move them to Vegas as well, when she suddenly got very nasty verbally and physically so I left to get away from her for a bit when she attempted to kill herself. She was admitted into the ICU with Tylenol poisoning because she took at least 75 pills and there was a chance of her live failing. Then we assumed that the doctors would become more involved because to be honest my oldest daughter has some serious issues that need dealt with. But No the released her 24 hours later. So now she is trying to figure out what to do.

Therefore I am trying to deal with planning my mother's move, dealing with my daughter who at this rate is driving us all insane. As I said the girl has issues and I am to the point if this is how she was acting I know why he felt he had to leave like he did. I am about ready to do the same because of the stress.

So that is what is up in my world. Just wanted to let everyone know I am here, but unsure how much I will get to do or how far I will get but I am going to give it a shot.

But I feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. i am to the point of just repeating "I want to go home" I want to go home.

Hopefully I will be home before the month is over and can at least hook up with everyone a few times before I have to wait an entire year to see everyone. That is half the fun of all this.
word count

quick question: how do you load your word count to the stats? Can you do it during the month while working on the novel as a work in progress, or at the end of November when you submit your ms for counting?
Good News or Shameless Brag!!

Good News or Shameless Brag!!

I sold my book!! Yup, my little NaNo Mystery I wrote two years ago is going to be published. Las Vegas Chew Toy will be out at the end of 2008 or spring 2009. They are also interested in the rest of the series, so look out for more Kayla Ann Dailee Mystery books.

The contracts are in negotiations so details will have to come later. I am not going to get rich on the advance but I will be getting a percentage of the sales.

So everyone plan on buying the book next year.

Dreams do come true.

What's your soundtrack?

I did this last year and I'm gonna do it again this year. I'm gonna put several posts up that are "food for thought" posts :) Just write what works for you :)

HEre's the first one.

What's your writing soundtrack? ie... what do you listen to when you write?

For me, predominantly with this book I'm listening to A New Journey by Celtic woman. It has the right feel for the Blademaster and track 14 (The Voice) is the theme song for the series. But it's not all I lsten to when I write.

For example, when I'm writing battle scenes, I usually throw in either Spread eagle or Meat Loaf. For romantic scenes I throw in some Barry Manilow...

What works for you?
East side Thursday nights

OK, for those of us who live on the east side, I'm going to go ahead and host the meetings like i was planning on every Thursday night at the B&N on Maryland and Flamingo just south of the Blvd Mall. I will be there starting around 7ish.

I might be a little late this Thursday because I have a job interview clear across town, but I'll be there :)

Look for the crazy looking cowboy in the gold shirt and black pants with a frenzied look on his face, a movhaccino in front of him and writing feverishly in a wee little notebook... that'll be me! :)
Kick-Off Parties?

I just want to clarify, since the current thread is really hard to follow.

Are there any parties for those of us on the west side of town tomorrow? I'm clear up on Ft. Apache, and not really looking forward to bussing it all the way to Pecos, or where ever the thing is going to be held.

Non-traditional scheduling meetings

I would like to propose, for those of us who do not have 9-5 jobs or school schedules, who do not have weekends free or even daytime weekday hours free, setting up some kind of meeting routine. I don't think it's fair for some to be left out of F2F Nanomeeting because they work graveyard at a casino or their schedule flexes week by week. I would at least like to be able to meet with other writers and make it possible for other writers with the same scheduling difficulties to be able to meet and greet, since that's part of the whole Nano experience.

Right now my schedule has me working way early morning shifts, but that could change at the drop of a hat. Evening weekday meetings would be awesome at this time. Anyone else want to set up some nontraditional meeting times/days?

Contact me and we'll coordinate something. Either nanomail or post here. Thanks!
