I know writing is a solitary business, but it would be comforting to know that somewhere nearby is some other mad fool trying to write a novel in 30 days.

Pre-NaNo freak out thread

Hey guys!

32 days to go? Is that right? Anyway, it's just over a month until it all kicks off!

It hadn't really sunk in until tonight, when I was at my writing group and we were discussing ideas for NaNo, and I was being quizzed about what exactly NaNo was. Trying to persuade some people from the group to at least see how much they can write in November even if they're not out and out wrimo's. I even offered prizes, one signed Dave McKean poster, the other... well I'm not sure yet.

By the way, you can tell the geeks by who was interested in that prize.

There will be prizes for you proper NaNo type people too. All you have to do is see how much you can write in November.

This year's freak out - otherwise known as why-I-possibly-won't-make-the-50k-mark excuse, I will be attempting NaNo whilst simultaneously learning how to spell simultaneously (I have NO idea), doing my diploma, doing a seperate short course through the OU and either job hunting or beginning gainful employment (I'm jobless at the mo! Eek!).

I will be posting details of meets and kick offs very soon. All are welcome, newbies and vets alike.

My NaNo Survival Kit.

As a first time NaNo-er I was just wondering if there was any helpful advice anyone wanted to impart on me. This month I’m creating my own little NaNo survival kit which, so far, consists of a jar of coffee, cookies and some angel delight. I know, I need to get some proper food... Either that or, if I finally get my student loan , order pizza every night... Though that might be a bit pricey...

I also have 1984 on audio book which, hopefully, will help when I start to run out of ideas... Either that or it’ll just annoy me... And when I need a break from that sort of thing I’ve still got to finish reading Jane Eyre.

I’m also going to have to find somewhere to set up base camp because trying to write 50k words in my house is going to drive me insane... Though I suppose if the weathers nice I can sit in the garden... Or rather in the pebble-covered enclosed space at the back of my house (don‘t you just love student housing?). Either that or I’m going to live at starbucks over the weekends...

So, what’s going to get you lot through November?

Who's got a plot? (Or rather; who's lost it.)

First off, quick hi to all the Derbyshire folks here. Honestly, I didn’t think that there would be anyone else from these parts doing this, glad I was wrong though.

So, 28 days to go till this kicks off. I’m actually quite excited about the whole thing. This is my first year doing NaNo. I’ve been wanting to write a novel for years, I’ve just needed an excuse to actually sit down and do it. But I think I’m really going to struggle with wanting to go back and edit things as I go but hopefully I’ll get passed that...

I’m a bit worried after speaking to a few others that I know doing it that I don’t really have a set in stone plot. I mean I have a very basic premise, which is that I want to write something in the same vein of 1984 but more relative to the present... But other than that I was just going to wing it.

I’m I the only one doing that, I mean does everyone else know exactly what they’re going to write?
