It's only day 9, and she's WAY past me. Meaning, she's a crazy person. And she APPARENTLY did not read her pep talk emails...!

So, how many other people want to beat her (or some other over-achieving novelist) up at the next meeting for writing more than them?
I'm coming for you, Sevi, and there's nothing you can do. *Glare*

Introductions

Hey everyone,
So it seems our last introduction post was deleted with the site crash last week. So lets start a new one.

Welcome to all the returners and to all the newbies. Our group is pretty laid back. We meet about twice a week around the AV for some writeouts. Everyone (including non-writing friends, parents, other family members, etc.) are welcome to all our events.

I'm Casdena (or Kristina in real life) and I'm one of the Municipal Liaisons for the Antelope Valley. I've been participating in NaNoWriMo since 2003 so this will be my sixth attempt at noveling glory. I've finished 3 times before.

I have absolutely no plot this year and a tremendous load of work at my job for November. However I am determined to be successful this year.

Hope to see everyone at some of our writeouts.

So my novel is a little stalled. (Yay for writing reports for work.)

But I want to hear about your novel. Tell me what's been happening plotwise. Have you had any surprise twists or character development? Any sudden character deaths?

Help me live vicariously through your noveling success.

Also, backup your novel in several places. Email to your self. Save it on a disk or memory stick.

NaNoWriMo's Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon

Hello Antelope Valley Wrimos,

NaNoWriMo HQ is excited to invite you to our second-annual Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon. Come spend a blissful night of eating, drinking, and novel-writing with 200 Bay Area NaNoWriMo participants and staff!

The event is on Saturday, November 15. This year’s theme: NaNo-Noir. We’ll be summoning the spirits of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett with chiaroscuro lighting, mood-setting background movies, and writing feats more dangerous than falling in love with a femme fatale. Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt, this will be a night you don’t want to miss.

How it Works:

All funds from the Write-a-thon benefit NaNoWriMo's youth and adult programs. To attend, just raise $200 or more in contributions through your easy-to-set-up Write-a-thon Firstgiving page by November 10.

Everyone who comes will get dinner, drinks, caffeine, a funny dinnertime talk by NaNoWriMo Director Chris Baty on 10 Years of NaNoWriMo Craziness, and a special Night of Writing Dangerously tote bag filled with books, writing software, and edible treats. You'll also have a chance to win raffle prizes such as museum passes, yoga classes, movie tickets, spa treatments, bottles of fine wine, and a baseball signed by Judy Blume.

So I embedded/linked the calendar on the main AV page. If you go back and look at our forum you'll see a pretty red link above that says "Check your official Antelope Valley Calendar of Events." Clicking this link takes you to our nifty Google Calendar. (You can join it if you have a gmail/google account and check it without coming to this site.)

I have one event up so far. But that brings me to the next topic, if you know you're gonna be out writing somewhere in the community and would like company, please private message or email myself or Casdena so we can include that event on the calendar!!

Extended Write-Out

The 24 hour write-out was awesome. I don't know if I could do 24 (or 17 which is what i think i actually managed) again so soon, but I would love to have another write-out with a longer time frame, like 6 hours maybe. Again people could come and go as they need to, but that 6 hours or so could be a good time to hunker down and scribble.

If I may, I'd like to suggest Nov 15th at Palmdale Panera from 1pm to 7pm.

The Getty Center - Write-Out

Hey Wrimos!

Hope your novels are off to a delicious start.

Casdena and I were thinking of taking a writing field trip away from the Antelope Valley and wanted to see if we could rally our writing troops to join us. We thought it would be awesome to drive up to the Getty Center on a Sunday in the near future (either Nov. 9 or 23) and sit amongst all the beautifully inspiring architecture, gardens, and artwork and pound out some precious words toward our beloved novels. The Getty is free to attend, however, parking is $10 per vehicle and it would take some gas $ to get up the hill. We're proposing a carpool/caravan among our AV Wrimos...so what we'd like to do is see how many of you are actually interested in going with us.

If you could reply to this thread with your preferred date (Sunday, Nov. 9 or Sunday, Nov. 23) and whether or not you would be willing to drive or go as a passenger, it would greatly help us finalize this treat of a writing experience.

24 Writeout

Hey everyone,

So I had this crazy idea to have a 24 hour write out. Basically our plan is to meet someplace and write for a few hours, then move to a new location and write some more. Then repeat until we've been writing for 24 hours.
Everyone is invited to this. Also, you do not have to join us for the full 24 hours. If you would like to write with us for just a few hours that would be perfectly fine. Of course those of us that write for the full 24 hours will have a huge word count boost.

The plan so far:
We'll meet at 11:30pm October 31 and start typing furiously at exactly 12:00am November 1st. Then we'll type there for a few hours.

The only place that I know of that is open between 12-6 am is Denny's. If anyone else knows someplace else, post it here for discussion.

After that we could move to a Starbucks or McDonald's (I think they have free wi-fi now) for the morning.

The plan is very tentative right now, so anyone that is interested feel free to add/discuss further possibilities.

(Also I have stickers and swag left over from past years to bribe more people to join us.)

ETA: Times/Locations have been decided. Details are listed on this thread and on our Google calendar.

Wish I'd realized that "Antelope Valley" seems to translate to "Lancaster" apparently!!!

I'm a transplant to Antelope Valley and live in Santa Clarita, over closer to the Newhall/Canyon Country end of the valley.

It seems that Lancaster has the monopoly on all the meetups tomorrow! I for one feel left out of the loop, I can't drive an hour considering my schedule for the day.

However, would anyone else in the SCV area, like to plan and gather for "hump day" (November 12th)?

Suggested locations: IHOP, It's A Grind...

I'm rather intimidated already and have written 736 words that sort of did a good job of whetting my appetite - and thoroughly freaking me out at the same time.

Also, any other people interested in gathering and meeting up at places sucha s Its A Grind, who have free WiFi and comfortable seating ;) I'd like to coordinate and meet some of you! I think it'd be encouraging...

Kickoff RSVP Thread

Ok everyone. RSVP for the Kickoff here. Let me know if you plan on attending so that we can plan accordingly.

Here's the plan:

We'll have our kickoff on October 25 at 4pm at Camille's Sidewalk Cafe (43901 15th St W, Lancaster, CA 93534).
Everyone is invited. Bring your friends, parents, significant others, etc. We might try to convince them that they need to write a 50,000 word novel too.
The only thing you need to bring is any plot ideas, characters sketches, etc to share with us. We also share dares and challenges with each other.
We'll meet for a couple of hours.
If anyone has any questions, this would be a perfect time to ask.

Oh, and I almost forgot, for anyone who is new and has never met me, I'll have a neon yellowish-green official ML shirt. I might not be wearing it because it hurts my eyes with it's blinding neon glare. But just look for the glowing yellow shirt and you'll find me.

Writeout Location Ideas

Ok, so in past years we've met at several awesome places but we're always looking for more.

Some things that make a place awesome for a write out include:
Plenty of outlets for laptops
Free WiFi
Affordable
Appropriate for all ages
Local

If you know an awesome place, list it here. Please include an address if possible.

One of my favorite places to novel in last year was Panera Bread in Palmdale (39403 10th St W Palmdale, CA 93551 ).
Plenty of outlets, free wi-fi, and a great atmosphere for noveling.

Also I might be a little crazy but I was thinking about hosting a 24 hour write out (I know, crazy, right?). Anyways, the plan would be to meet somewhere for 4 hours or so and then move to a new location for another 4 hours. Then repeat until we've spent a full day noveling. If you are interested in at least participating in part of a 24 hour write out let me know. If enough people are interested, I was thinking about starting maybe on a Friday night and novel through Saturday early in November. It could give us a huge word count boost.

Antelope Valley Kickoff Plans

So it's getting close to November and I was looking at the calendar to plan out dates for the kickoff.

It looks like maybe the last weekend might be best. How does Saturday Oct 24 work for everyone?

Location is still to be determined. Time will probably be late afternoon, early evening. Everyone is welcome to join us and I'll have goodie bags and official Nanowrimo stickers.
