Well... theanab asked where the smacktalk thread was. I'm not sure why someone on the SLC team would want to know that... but hey, he asked, so here it is. :)

Hmm. Let's look at those numbers for just a moment...

As of this moment, Elsewhere is /ahead/ of the 50k pace as a team. And they have 8 members on pace to break 80k words.

SLC, on the other hand... is behind the 50k pace, and only has 4 members on pace to break 80k words.

Guess who's winning.... :)

Brandon Sanderson Writing Workshop @ Dragon's Keep

Sorry for the late notice, and the early sketchy details on this. I was notified last week, in passing, that Brandon would be at Dragon's Keep tonight, 'probably at 6'.

Well, it's official now. He will be there from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, and he will be giving us a little talk about writing. Not sure what exactly, but I'm sure it will be excellent. For those who don't know, Brandon Sanderson is a published author with several excellent fantasy novels out, and he was tapped for the honor of completing the Wheel of Time series.

Please, try to be there early if you can. I know this is earlier than we usually meet, but this was scheduled with minimal input from me, and I'm not going to complain, because Brandon is going out of his way to do something nice for us, as is Dragon's Keep by providing us with this opportunity.

Again, that is tonight, Tuesday the 18th at 6:00 PM, at Dragon's Keep (260 N University Ave, Provo). I hope to see you there!

Finally! XD Only...several days late. -_-;

Kk, here we go:

Week 1:
Thursday, November 6 @ 7pm @ McDonald's@ 12th and Washington

Week 2:
Monday, November 10 @ 530 @ Grounds for Coffee
Thursday, November 16 @ 7 @Grounds for Coffee

After that...well, I'm still ~~arguing~~ talking to the library and a few other places.

If there's a specific place you'd like to go let me know. I'm hoping to have the rest of the month figured out by end of next week. I tried to make it more or less convenient for everybody, but...yeah. I know some can't come to EVERY event, and that's totally fine. I'm not really expecting you to. Anyway, just one for the first week, but there will probably be two each week after that.

Both places have Wi-Fi and outlets, so it's all good. (Really, I'd rather go to the McDonald's in North Ogden, because it's NICE, newly remodeled and so pretty...but it might be a bit out of the way for some of you, so we'll just meet in the middle.)

Also: no real ending times. It just goes until everyone's sick of each other. Though I doubt I'd stay longer than 2 hours. Anyway...

First: I'm VERY sorry this is so late getting posted. I've been going crazy dealing with life. Anyone who's ever started a corporation can tell you what I'm going through. :)

Here are the rules for this year. The community has spoken, and it the vast majority of you want the rules nice and simple, so we're going back to first year rules on this:

1. Teams must be completed by Noon on the 8th of November, local time. No changes will be permitted after that.
2. Signups / Retractions must be posted in this thread.
3. That's it.

There are two teams, unless I hear otherwise, since it seems like the various 'elsewhere' regions are all too small to form their own teams. SLC and Elsewhere.

Utah Wordwar - 2008 Edition (Rules Discussion)

Welcome to another year of NaNoWriMo! To continue the tradition of past years, I am starting up this thread to establish the rules for this year's war.

Last year, we experimented with locking people out if they failed to update for a certain interval. In my opinion, that didn't work very well, and caused bad feelings on both sides.

This year, I propose we go back to the very simple rules we had for the 2006 war. You have to sign up to participate by the end of the first week, and once that period has passed, the participant list is locked.

Also, I would like to include all the Utah regions this year, if they are interested. It should make for a more interesting competition.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Feel free to post anything concerning the rules for this year's wordwar here.

Kick-Off Party

KK, since everyone's been hounding me about it (J/K) I've finally got the plans for the Kick-off party thingy. YAY!

It'll be at GODFATHER'S PIZZA at 539 N. HARRISVILLE ROAD in HARRISVILLE from 12-3, on Saturday, November 1st. (By the Harrisville Wal-mart.)

It's more of a meet-and-greet, as I've been told there aren't accessible electrical outlets. (which is strange, I could've sworn there were some the last time I was there...*shrug*) It's a little further north than some of the places we've talked about, but it's spacious and affordable, and usually empty enough they don't care about the noise. :)

If possible, I would like a count of whoever's planning to attend, so I can give the place an accurate count. :)

Also, if you're uncomfortable or nervous coming on your own, feel free to bring friends and family. The more the merrier.

The other was more of a welcome thread that was becoming an intro thread, so here's a real introduction one :)

I'd like to get to know a little more about each of you. And, this will sound weird, but I'd like to know at least sorta where you live--it'll help me plan get-togethers and write-ins and stuff. If everyone lives in S. Ogden, then I'll happily drive down there, otherwise, I'm gonna be pushing for things a little further north :)

I guess I'll start:

My name is Candice, I'm a twenty year old WSU student. I have two jobs--waitressing at Ye Lion's Den, and I work as a transporter at McKayDee (love the transporting job. I just push people around in beds and wheelchairs, and if there's no one to push, i get to play video games on my computer. I mean work on my novel. Right....my novel...) I actually live up in Pleasant View...you take Washington till it ends then keep going. I need to move to S. Ogden. That's where everything is :P I'm the oldest of four kids, and still living at home.My little sister is 16 (and doesn't have a car to drive. Neener. We junked the one she was going to XD) and my little brothers are 11 and 4. Hm...I like Heroes, and webcomics (LFG=win), and fantasy and sci-fi, and historical fiction--ok, so I'm a bibliophile. I love reading, even the little pamphlets in the doctors office. XP I also love reading and critiquing other people's stuff (so sorry pillywiggin! I had your stuff, but LIFE got in the way!!!!). I actually almost like it better than my own stuff. I'm a big-time fangirl, and become easily obsessed. I like to draw, but don't do it often, and not very well. I like to quote things, particularly Abridged series, and dislike horror movies(unless I'm in a group), but l like to read it. :D My favorite color is purple but I...don't think I actually own any purple clothes. Hmm...I'm Mormon, but not super conservative or crazy. Although i am trying to break my 'addiction' to caffeine...though that's more so I can actually get some sleep at night...and I might give up and wait til November's over for that :) My favorite book/character/movie/show tends to change weekly. And occasionally daily or hourly, so I'm not going to get into that much. Currently, my favorite book is Lies of Locke Lamora, my favorite charcter is Richard from the webcomic Looking For Group, my favorite movie is Pirates of the Carribean, and my favorite show is Heroes. But like I said, gimme a day or two. It depends on what sort of 'kick' I'm on. Last week my favorite character was Tinker Bell...

Meeting Places and Times?

I'm new and inexperienced and not afraid to show it! Also, for some reason I REALLY like starting new topics XD

But seriously: What are some places y'all would like to meet? I've e-mailed UTA to see if we could play on the FrontRunner or something for a day, and e-mailed the county library about a partnership (and intend to harass the library in person, maybe tomorrow or Thursday), and Grounds for Coffee has been mentioned. Personally I'm not a huge G4C fan, because I don't drink coffee and their hot chocolate tastes funky. Like the hard coating of M&Ms that's been liquefied :P But that's just me.

What is crucial for a meeting? Do you want to differentiate between Write-Ins and Get Togethers/Meet and Greets?

Would you be interested in meeting at, say, the Municipal Gardens? Union Station? Eccles Community Art Center or Ogden Daughters of The Utah Pioneers Museum? Ogden Nature Center? Treehouse Children's Museum? Farr's Icecream? The Mall or the Junction? Eccles Dinosaur Park?

Ok, so some of them I was just naming because I could, but you get the idea. Do you want more of a central location, or several? Heck, even McDonald's is an option--they have wireless, food and plenty of outlets, along with late hours. And apparently really good coffee. The one by my house has been recently refurbished, and is practically made for nanorimo. A ton of power outlets, and a little private nook. It's kinda weird, actually. Really nice timing....

Any preferences? If there's a place you'd like to go, I'd prefer to bug them ahead of time, rather than the day of. :) And any preferences on WHEN you want to get together, or when you're available to do so would be appreciated. And I'm hoping to have a calendar more or less ready by the end of October, so everyone can see what's being planned. Hopefully I can get that up.

Obviously not everyone can be accommodated, but hopefully everyone will at least be able to attend at least a few of the events :)

I don't know about most of you, but I'm not a fan of the message board software that they use here at the official site. It restricts the MLs excessively, causing us to have to send any requests for moderation or administration to the admins of the site. It is also missing several very useful features that most message board software has.

So, I have taken the liberty of purchasing a domain for the Utah NaNoWriMo participants, and I've set up a forum for us to use. You are by no means obligated to use it, but I think it's a lot better than what we have here, and I'd encourage you to use it.

The website is UtahWrimos.net and it is ready for use right now. It has and integrated calendar system, and I've already set up forums for all of the regions in Utah.

Again, please don't feel obligated to use these new forums if you don't want to. I, and all other MLs, will continue to monitor these forums, and make sure they aren't kept out of the loop.
