The Kick-off Party

Hello Sudbury!

We're almost two weeks into October, so it's time to start planning the kick-off party. In the end, sure, it's up to me as the ML (and any co-ML that may still show up), but it's as much your party as mine. So the basic questions are:

Q1: Who?

A1: As many of us as possible.

Q2: What?

A2: It'll be a kick-off party, that much we know. But should it be a meet-up (social, non-writing) event where we can share a few of our ideas for our plots, angst about how we're going to get our characters from point a to point c, and try to come up with just a few more character names while we meet each other and talk about numerous non-writing things, or should it be a write-in, where we all get together with out computers/notepads/PDAs/iPhones/Blackberries and write away, starting off the month with a few word wars while drumming up other challenges for one another?

Q3: Where?

A2: This is a biggie. There are a tonne of different places that could probably accomodate us in this city. I've chatted a bit with Sylvie ( sinful_cinnamon ), and I agree for the first get-together, having it at someone's place is probably not a good idea. We'll save that for the TGIO party at the end of the month (or maybe even a 25k celebratory party in the middle of the month). So what locations here in Sudbury do you think would make for a great spot for a kick-off party? What makes your suggestion a great spot for the kick-off? Would it be better for a meet-up or a write-in style kick-off party?

Q4: When?

A4: Do you want it on the evening of Saturday, November 1st (starting 7:00pm), or sometime on Sunday, November 2nd (time open to discussion)? As a caution, November 2nd may be difficult for some participants due to bussing considerations.

Q5: Why?

A5: We're all in this together. Getting 50,000 words in a single month is a totally insane thing to do. Let's not kid ourselves, it is going to be tough. But when we get through this, it'll totally be killer. By meeting up at the beginning, we get the chance to meet and befriend other Wrimos in the region, people that we can feel free to rant to a little bit about our crazy plots, maybe even mention a roadblock that someone else may be able to break down. Writing in packs is a great way to shoot your word count well above the daily goal of 1,667 words, and social get-togethers are an excellent chance to unwind after a hard day of getting your characters to leap through those hoops.

So there we have it, the query post. I anxiously await your opinions. Let's make this our best kick-off party ever!
Events?

I was just wondering if there will be events again this year in the Sudbury region? Do we still have an ML? (I think it was Rhenn last year... you still around??) If we don't have an ML this year, then I guess we could just decide to get together when/where we want. What do you all think?

(~Sylvie~)
Twitter Solidarity?

Hihi. Not sure how many folks know about this social application called Twitter (www.twitter.com).

If you are familiar with Facebook, Twitter is essentially just a place where personal updates, or Tweets, get posted by users. You have a character limit (something like 125 letters and spaces), and people post about whatever they want to post about - what their eating, what their seeing, shout-outs to friends, happy discoveries, the amount of sugar in their tea, the US election debate play-by-plays, whatever.

NaNoWriMo itself has a Twitter feed, so you can follow major events. And on your computer, or on your iPhone, you can follow tweets with one of the programs like Twitterific, Twitteroo or Twitbin, you can keep up to date all the time.

In one case, one podcaster (a writer), that I listen to frequently had this crazy deadline to meet to get one of his books done, and he started this thing called Solidarity, where he would post his word counts and others taking part would post theirs. It was part celebration, part competition, as writers would goad each other on to higher and higher word counts.

What do you think of having a Sudbury solidarity? Yeah, we could do it with a bigger group, too, but it would be really encouraging to see everyone progress word by word, day by day, whether or not we make it the website here to see what everyone is doing?

Any takers?
Challenges

I've created this thread to keep track of all the crazy challenges made to us by our friends and foes across the country. Below, post any challenges you've agreed to with others in the area, or in other regions.

Writing Challenge #1:

shmuzelle, Canada:: Ontario :: North Bay

I challenge thee...one of your characters must make some sort of reference to Bacon Mushroom Melts...and that sexual harassment will be graded.

Rintaran, Canada :: Ontario :: Sudbury

Agreed. In exchange, one of your characters must wear a Burger King crown and say "Hail to the King baby."

Getting started!

Aren't we quiet on the boards this year, Sudbury!

I guess I should introduce myself... My name's Sylvie, and if you want to know more, you can check out my NaNo profile. I'm really excited about trying this again (I attempted and failed last year, but being a university student is really not condusive to productivity in areas other than academia...). I hope that we'll have events again this year! I only made it out to one of them last year (due to the whole being in midterms thing...) but plan on being more active this year.

What is everyone planning on working on this year? I'm trying my hand at children's fiction. I am excited and scared, as this is completely uncharted territory for me. I have a little blurb about my story idea on my profile, in case anyone's interested.

Anyways, just thought I'd send out a feeler and see who's out there this year!

(~Sylvie~)
