Conventions

I know this is probably a little off-topic (more than a little) but since Reed Herring said something about Con*Stellation, I thought I'd just drop this link in to let those who're interested know about a new con coming to the Huntsville area this year.

It's a Sci-fi and anime con on Halloween weekend, and so far it looks like it'll be really cool.
Please attend at least one day so that it'll stick around - since this is the first time it's been held. If we get lots of people to come, maybe we can get it as big as DragonCon?
Alabama North kick-off at Constellation, Big Cove BBQ, Starbuck's ??

In the days before the 2008 forums, there was some discussion of kick-off options. I, for one, am really in favor of having our kick-off together with the NASFCAS* reading at this year's Con*Stellation, the local science fiction convention held at the Holiday Inn Express, Huntsville, AL, just East of Jorday Lane intersection on University Drive.

The event is shown on the Con*Stellation tentative schedule as:

Friday, October 17, 2009
8P Huntsville Science Fiction Writer’s Group and Cake Appreciation
Society (2 hrs) ...........................................................................................Lobby II

That's at the lobby where the convention registration is held (not hotel registration) and is in front of the wing closest to Jordan Lane.

What this would entail?

1. Attending only the reading at the convention. The reading has traditionally been free of charge and does not require a convention membership. It will also introduce you to both Con*Stellation and members of NASFCAS* (the North Alabama Science Fiction and Cake Appreciation Society), many of whom also attend the Huntsville Literary fiction writers' group (and some of which are even dues-paying members of HLA; NASFCAS has no dues requirement).

2. After about an hour or so of readings of darn good science fiction and fantasy, NASFCAS joins you, the audience, in chomping down on the goodies which members bring, some home-made (usually cookies, brownies and sometimes the pies and cakes for which it is duly famous).

3. In conjunction with #3, we will hand out Nanwrimo goody bags to those who plan to participate in the November novel-writing month. The "we" includes myself and Bryan Jones, my co-ML and husband (importance of role not necessarily in that order, but it might be). We will also answer questions which require short answers, as we have to clear out of the room before 10:30 p.m. (at the latest) when a dance is scheduled there.

4. Traditionally, NASFCAS and its audience have adjourned to the nearest Barnes & Noble. Now that the West-side stor-e has moved to the new walking mall at Bridge Street Center (at the Madison Pike west exit off of Research Park Blvd., formerly known as "Rideout Rd." and marked with state Hwy. No. 255, just North of I-565W). If this occurs, and we will certainly head there, we can hang out and talk Wrimo-trash until at least 11 pm when B&N closes.

We did two-three kick-offs last year which was a bit rough on us, but we'll do more if necessary. We have made tentative arrangements for a kick-off BBQ party at Big Cove BBQ on Taylor Rd. across from the Hampton Cove Wal-Mart (just off Hwy 431 W at 330 Sutton Road). We would have one or more party plates available for sandwiches on the patio and plan the kick-off for between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. so people could come by after work and before the shop closes at 7 p.m.

If we go for this latter Big Cove BBQ bash as an additional option, we will have to plan it Tuesday, October 21, or Wednesday, October 22, as after that we are tied up in other October events.

And of course, we can always have a java kick-off at the Starbuck's on Governor's Dr. (near Huntsville Hospital) if none of this works for some of you.

Sing out, y'all, time's a'wastin',
