Hi guys!

Creating a topic for ML emails/news from HQ that will be sent. =) Just in case your spam filter keeps on catching my email (or you've marked me as spam already haha...but seriously? Please don't. At least, not for November :D), I'll be posting them here so you can keep track of them too. :D Yes, pep talks included. :D

So keep checking this thread for updates!

[STICKY] Pinoywrimo Progress Graph

We had this last year, and it was extremely useful by TGIO time, so let's do this again. :D

Here's how this works. One of the USA MLs set this tool up so whoever posts in this thread will automatically get added to this graph that displays all of our progress for November. It's not a complete picture of the region, but it's good enough to be able to see who's lagging behind and who's shooting up up and up. :D

So everyone who posts here will be added to the graph automatically. Just one post, and it's enough :D To make this thread a bit fun, let's include one line of our novel in our post :)

Okiedokie? Let me know if you have any questions. :D

<strike>* graphic image will be added in this space shortly, as soon as it shows up. :)</strike>

Aaand here's the graph!

* This image gets updated from time to time as people post here or if you update your word count. :D
[IMPORTANT] PinoyWriMo Pledge Program

Hi everyone!

To those who attended the Kick-Off, you wouldn't be a stranger to this one already as you've seen the sheets in your kits. To those who weren't there...here's something you missed :D

So we talked about fundraising, and here's a thread dedicated only to one of the ideas there, the pledging program. Details and instructions below, much thanks to purplyana. :)

How it works:
Get your friends and family to support your NaNoWriMo effort by pledging an amount they specify against a condition (for example, that you make 50K in the third week, that you make 50k at all, that you make 25k in your first week, etc.).

On the pledge sheet:
- Name of pledger
- Pledged amount
- Condition
- Signature

What you can do with the money:
- Keep some for yourself
- Donate to PinoyWrimo (to be given to an Ondoy/Pepeng charity and OLL)

Steps for PinoyWrimos who want to join:
1. Sign up at the forum for pledging.
2. Get or print out a pledge sheet. -> http://www.pinoywrimos.com/download/2009/pinoywrimo_pledge_sheet.pdf
3. Get friends and family to fill it out.
4. Meet the conditions (or don't).
5. Collect the money you make from fulfilling conditions.
6. Donate any money you want to donate via the website or at the TGIO

Once again, let me reiterate that this is NOT mandatory, and you don't need to do this to do NaNoWriMo. This is purely a volunteer thing, and we won't hold it against you if you don't do it. If you do it, we'll really, really appreciate it. :)

To those who are going to do the pledging program this year, please post a comment here so we can keep track on who is participating. Proceeds will also be posted here (and in the fundraising thread) so everyone's updated. :D

If you have any questions, please feel free to post here or email or NaNoMail me. :D
Surviving Manila: Risen Threat (if anyone is interested in reading it)

Nanowrimo 2009 Entry: Surviving Manila: Risen Threat

There were hundreds upon thousands of them, moving down the narrowing section of the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue as if in silent protest against the corrupt regime of a debilitated government. No banners were raised in this march of the masses this time however. No music-interwoven insults were chanted. No stage was raised at the foot of the massive metal madonna whose outstretched hands held immobile beams of concrete hope.

This was no revolution unfolding upon the main road known as EDSA.

It was well past the third hour of the afternoon and the sun hung closer towards the horizon. A comfortably chilly November such as this would typically be punctuated by the blare of car horns, the groan and rumble of privately-owned buses and the self-serving sirens of the escorted public officials whose cars (regardless of whom rode in them) were given priority and enforced passage through the traffic slowed streets. Instead, there was an ominous lingering silence. The uneasy peace of quiet blanketed the area was reminiscent of ghost towns and movie cities that had been ravaged by the hordes of the undead or the undiscriminating touch of plague.

And that was quite an apt comparison.

For indeed Manila was infected with plague.
A plague of the hungry and the walking dead.

---
NaNo Distractions DDD<

I think we all need a place to rant about these things especially if your friends or family are so sick of you venting out on them that sometimes, you'd rather just not waste their time or they'd rather just not hear you out.

So what are those filthy little things that keep you from being productive in your NaNo? Is it an ugly neighbor? Your dog who's constantly hungry for a little TLC? Some online friend who wouldn't take "brb" for an answer? Who knows, someone might take these rants as inspirations for their novels. :D

For me, it's mostly my neighbors. This problem has existed for...about a year or two, already to the point that I have become a little too used with their noise but listening to their problems (since the family sounds dysfunctional) make me very uncomfortable! I mean, private lives, anyone? Their parents don't stay there everyday, I don't think, so the kids are always shouting and screaming and sometimes, we don't need to turn our TV on just to listen to TV Patrol. O.o It's that bad!

It's the kids that are mostly so damn noisy -- especially their youngest sister who's such a big whiner. There's never a day when she doesn't cry or when she doesn't fight with her caretakers and the sad thing about it is that when we shout at them (since their house is literally just a stone's throw away and do believe me when I say sometimes, I'm so tempted to rip my screen open and throw a stone at them) to shut up, the caretakers used to tell the kid "See, now you've bothered the neighbors!" but now, that doesn't even happen anymore! It's taking all of me just to keep myself from knocking on their door and telling them "What the fuck is wrong with you?" but I have to be a modest neighbor and sometimes I'm lazy. >.>

But as if that isn't enough, just recently, they've brought over a Japanese spritzer and when the thing barks, it's so pitchy and thin and high and sometimes, I swear, I could feel it barking right at my ear! I shush it from my window and I am so sure the entire neighborhood hears me but, of course, they don't do anything about it. I am really so ready to burn the whole place down. >.>

So that's what's been distracting me from my NaNo. Sometimes, I can't concentrate and sometimes, I'm just filled with so much rage and hate that I can't go on until they shut up. It happens every, single day, too. It's so bothersome!

Whew. That was a long rant.
NaNo Booboos

Sooo... Have you done any major booboos so far? We can share here, but let's not focus on the negative aspect of it.:P

Me, I accidentally overwrote my outline with my actual story, because I forgot that the file bearing the title was the outline. Urgh.

Positive side: At least I can get out of my OC tendencies and try to wing this (though there's a part of me that would try to stick to the outline as closely as I can remember it).:P
Hoping to catch up!

Okay, I went in here with only the merest idea of a plot. I was writing this story as a sort of catharsis, something to divert my attention and even relax me, because I missed my hometown so much and writing it was a way to wander around in the country lanes in my memory. It was going to be a banal little Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden type of story where one young girl living in an out-of-the-way rural area gets new neighbors and a more exciting summer than the one she expected. She explores some ruins, catches some thieves, makes new friends. Her days are full of chores, and visiting friends, and the village fiesta is coming up. Even under-12s could read it, it was so idealized.
Except that as I write, things are getting darker than I bargained for. Suddenly the older brother of her new best friend, who initially was moody because his parents had yanked him out of the city and away from his old friends who they think are bad influences, gets drawn into the story and stands accused of many misdemeanors because of his past and because the bad things happening in their place started only after he arrived. Now I have to struggle with the transition of sunshine into shadow, and I'm still torn between subduing this character to fit the story I'd originally thought to write, or darkening the whole story to fit him because he sure is more flesh-and-blood than the others, and he's not even the main character. The main character is the girl who is 13 and her personality is still quite unformed because her little world is all that she's ever known.

----------
“The neighborhood is full of houses, all abandoned,” Katrin remarked to nobody in particular.

Anyone encountered "hate" or ill will from doing NaNoWriMo?

Was surfing the LJ comm fandomsecrets today and ran across this secret that said: "I hate NaNoWriMo because it makes all my fandom friends disappear for a month!"

URL to the picture: http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/9666/nanog.jpg

Half the comments to the secret agree to the poster, half politely disagree.

Comments here: http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/384435.html?thread=211773...

So it set me off to thinking, what, haters gotta hate on people who are trying to genuinely accomplish something in their lives?

Anyway, wanted to hear your thoughts. Admittedly, that thing threw me off my game for a few minutes. Some people can really rather feel "entitled", or something, I don't know.
I still don't have a title!

I posted this at the sci-fi forum, but I'd really like to ask for the help of the Pinoys!

The working title for my story is "Mission and Vision" which makes me want to roll my eyes a lot. I was also thinking of "What Heroes Are Made of", but it's no less irritating. I haven't had a good night's rest because of this (seriously!), so I turn to you fellow wrimos for suggestions.

Here's the plot:

It's set after a worldwide war, and peace and order has supposedly been established, at least on an international scale. During that war there was one country that had built humanoid robots that functioned first as combatants, then as actual weapons. After the war, this country still has humanoid robots living amongst them, many co-existing with humans peacefully. But because the robots had a certain feature that can make them lethal, they still pose as a threat to security.

There are two factions in the story: Sentry, the military group aligned with the government, and Neotech, the ones who built the robots in the first place. Sentry forms a special unit to cautiously get rid of all the existing robots. Neotech, which is still developing robots without the warfare features, also forms a unit to protect the robots. They also take turns fighting terrorists and the non-harmonious robots.

So, what do you guys think? Any ideas? :) I'd really appreciate the help!
Magat Casipit, On Crabs Pulling Each Other Down.

Hi. One of my secondary characters asked me to post his monologue. He'll throw a fit if I don't do what he says, so here it is. Hope you like it.

It only looks that way in the beginning. When the crabs are all at the bottom of the basket you can tell they’re clambering over one another in their effort to get out. Of course they are. They’re confused.

But just because they’re confused at first doesn’t mean they’re not intelligent.

Come back an hour later and I tell you – if that basket had no cover, all the crabs would be gone. Sooner or later, one will climb up the wall of the basket instead of over his fellows, and then another will follow, and then another. There’s a reason those baskets need to be covered.

You’re not being fair to the crabs.

11/14: Double Your Daily Word Count Day

We're almost halfway through November! Can you believe how fast time flies this month? :-o

I'm really glad to most of you already have SOARING word counts. Great job, everyone who's beyond the word count quota today!

But for most of us (me, included), we're kind of having a hard time catching up on our word counts. Yep, it always happens on Week 2 -- we find it hard to squeeze in noveling into our daily schedules. Or, even if we do have time, our plots are stuck, or we just can't find the will to write.

So this is why I'm borrowing a NaNoWriMo holiday declared by one of the MLs from the USA :: Texas :: Dallas/Ft. Worth region: Double Your Daily Word Count Day. Here's how it goes:

Whatever your end-of-day word count is tonight (Friday night), you divide that number by 13 (13 days into November, after all). The result is your average daily word count, and your goal on Saturday is to write twice that many words.

Got it? So say, my word count as of this posting is 19,405, my daily average would be 1,492 words. I would have to write 2,984 words tomorrow to be able to succeed in this challenge. (And see my average? I'm way behind).

If your average is less than 1,667, and you are behind, then I challenge you to get to a grand total of at least 25,005 words - that's where you should be by Saturday, so if you make it there by Saturday then you will be a full day ahead.

The bigger your word count is, the higher your average...but that's not stopping you, right? ;)

Use this thread to post your magic number, the number of words you'll be writing tomorrow. Then, when you finish writing those words, post again to let everyone know that you are victorious.

If you get to finish this challenge on Saturday, then you are free to NOT write on Sunday and take a day off. After all, you've worked hard enough. :) There are no ACTUAL prizes for winning this challenge other than the feeling of accomplishment that you've done the challenge and possibly reached your word count quota. If you don't get that feeling even after doubling your word count...then go and write more!

Okay, wait so maybe there will be prizes. Like chocnut. Or something.

So come on, join in!
A Writer's Book of Matches (NaNoWrimo Break Time Game)

I just got this new book called "The Writer's Book of Matches" with daily prompts to stimulate creativity. I thought I'd share a prompt daily here as a break activity to cleanse your palette before you write another word for your novel. I tried it and it gave me some ideas for future work as well as make me look at my current NaNo project in a new light just like our ice breaker "Pimp Your Plot" at the Kick-Off event.

So just respond in one paragraph or less with a plot idea, dialogue, or other thought to the situation.

I'll even do the first one as as example:

During his third night out of town, a traveling businessman discovers a voodoo doll in his hotel room.

Newbies, if you don't have a mentor or if you need more than one, post here, and we'll try to find you one! Priority will be given to the newbies without mentors.

Mentors, if you have slots open, post here, and we'll see which newbies can benefit the most from your NaNoWisdom!

Personally, I can take one more newbie this year. :)
Word War 2009

Sorry it took me so long to post this. :D Here are the Word War standings for the past three online word wars in 2009. :D

WAIT! What is a word war?
A word war is a challenge where wrimos write their novel as much as they can in a given span of time. The wrimo who writes the most number of words within the time limit wins the word war. :)

This year, we're doing a cumulative scoring, based on all that you have written in the word war. So the more you enter the word wars, the more chances you can get of upping your word count. The Wrimo with the highest word count by the end of the 2009 series wins the Word Warrior of the Year award (that's an actual award by TGIO :D).

How long does a word war last?
Usually one hour, unless we run out of days to hold word wars so we make it thirty minutes.

Where do these word wars happen?
Every Tuesday and Thursday at the Pinoywrimo chat room, from 9-10PM! Chat starts at 8PM. :) Join us! http://chatnano.net/tempchats/philippines.html

Do we have to join the word war to chat?
Nope, no need. You can just watch the madness in the chatroom. :P

Who can join the word war?
Anyone can :)

Why should I join a word war?
Joining word wars can greatly boost your word count. Seriously. Just ask those who joined. :D

* I'm using the names in the chatroom here and it may not be the same as the one used in the NaNo forums.

UP Diliman People

Might as well. So you guys want to meet regularly? xD Once a week or something like that? I can try sorting out the scheds. Just give me details for your free time and contact info on nanomail, as well as any suggestions for meeting place. As for what we'll do. I don't know. Let's all meet first and see what happens, yes? If all you guys want to do is have lunch or cry on each other's shoulders because you have no idea why you're doing this then that's what we'll do. We shall see. XD As for any workshopping. We can do that when the month is done. We'll have to give consideration for the length of course but we'll see if it's doable.

But, yes, to start it all off. Does everyone want to attempt to get together next week? It's enrollment so we don't have to match class schedules yet. Maybe Wednesday at around 5 PM so everyone can get their enrollment all sorted out first?
Newbies in Need of Ates/Kuyas

Since we seem to be getting more and more Pinoywrimos every year, I figured we might want to set up a regional newbie/mentor system like they have on the worldwide boards.

This would hopefully get our word counts up and help us make writing buddies in our areas---we could have more midweek and weekend write-ins for our mentor groups then.

-------

Newbies, please post the following info if you want an Ate / Kuya to help you through November. Don't post your email addresses!

Ates and kuyas, please browse and NaNoMail the people you would like to mentor.

1. Age
2. Location (specifics like "Ortigas area" or "Makati" or "Cebu City")
3. Genre
4. Short info about novel (including language)
5. What you're looking for in a mentor (e.g. if you want someone who can meet you in person or if offline meets are OK, if you want advice on writing style or just encouragement and someone to bug you to write more)
6. Non-NaNo interests

Good luck! I'm sure you can have more than one ate/kuya if you want, but it would be nice to let them know if you have several (and if you have several, please let other newbies have a chance too).
