All right PeNaNos...how we feelin'?

I've been sloooooow to get to the NaNo'ing this year, but damnit, I'm IN.

I've written my crazy fingers off over the past two days and have pulled up to 14k words, now not the "ohmigosh I'm so far behind I'll never catch up" phase, but still at the "can't. lose. focus." stage.

This year's NaNo has been tougher for me than usual. I haven't caught that "fire in my belly" yet. This one feels like more of a slog than years past.

But that's just me.

Chime in PeNaNos! How *you* doin'? : wink wink :

----------
“My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging.” - Hank Aaron

Palo Alto write in?

Hello folks. I'm new(ish) to the area.... was from San Jose, and did Nano for several years with the SoBa folks, but we moved to Redwood City in August. Spouse works at Shutterfly (back behind the Oracle buildings) and the commute up from Alum Rock area was just killer.

My name's Beth, I'm principal cellist of the Palo Alto Philharmonic, which is a very good amateur group if I do say so myself. :) I'm a stay at home mom with an 11 year old daughter, a spouse and a dog. Had carpal tunnel release surgery on both wrists summer before last, so if you have any questions about music or that surgery/recovery/therapy, don't hesitate to ask!

Pacifica Write-Ins

Hello,

There has been some talk of Pacifica write-ins, but they seem to get lost in the shuffle of other Peninsula events, so I decided to start a new topic just for Pacifica.

So... where and when do you want to get together? I would suggest the Chit Chat Cafe on the beach by the post office. There is another Chit Chat cafe by the pier, but that one is cramped, drafty, and smells like bait.

When are good days/times? Monday and Tuesday evenings work for me, and the occasional weekend day.

----------
Regional Write-Ins from around the bay... check 'em out

If you're going to be around the bay outside SF, be sure to check the other regional forums/calendars for details on local write-ins you can drop in on.

And if you're in another region and seeing this post, see where you might find yourself, and meet some random writers for yourself!

You can often find me at the Tuesday write-in in Mountain View, Thursday write-in in San Mateo, and the Sunday write-in in Campbell. The first two are very Caltrain-friendly. Campbell can be reached via Caltrain-to-VTA but it'll take you a while.

I know - last year we went kind of fancy at Chevy's but this year I just don't have the time to coordinate something that big, so I'm going back to our roots this year with a Meet & Greet at Peet's.

WHEN: 7pm to 10pm, Thursday, October 30th, 2008

WHY: Because we can!

Fun! Games! Prizes! Ducks!!

B there or B square!

Bay Area Writers Retreat 2008 -- Space Available

Hi folks,

Those of you who've been around for a while have heard a lot about the Bay Area Writers Retreat. Twice a year a small assortment of bay area writers head off to a vacation rental for a long weekend of eating, drinking, talking, writing, and general productivity in the spirit of NaNoWriMo.

Check it out: http://retreat.andromedary.org/

We'll be gathering November 7-10 in Aptos, south of San Jose near Santa Cruz. We're renting a 7 bedroom manor house with beach access within walking distance for inspiration.

Due to record turnout (13) we sized ourselves out of our usual sites, so the cost is estimated (and the reservation fee is set) a bit higher than past years, at $350. This includes up to 3 nights of rustic resort living, all the food and drink you can imagine and then some, and prodding to get more words written than you thought you could do in one weekend. Meet your SF/Peninsula/South Bay MLs and maybe even see their pyjamas. How many NaNos can say they've done that? (the answer is probably 37.)

We had more up-front signups this year and almost no waiting-list interest, but there are a couple of last minute openings. So if you're thinking about going and can get your reservation fee in this weekend, you can still join us. Last year's ten attendees got just over 100k words done over the weekend, and somehow we didn't run out of Halloween candy or wine either. This year, maybe 150k! And how many of those words would help push your novel along?

If you're interested, email me asap at sfnanos at gmail dot com, and I'll answer any questions and help you get signed up.
Opening Night House Party?

Since Opening Night is a Friday, my plan was to stay up and write away on Halloween night. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in joining for a few hours - say, midnight to 3pm?

I'm in Pacifica, and have a big house right off Hwy 1, near the pier. I can put on a pot of coffee and provide plenty of room to spread out. (No wireless on Friday night; that's a long story.)

Let me know if anyone would be interested!
"You just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake."
About the PenNano Regional Calendar

Hi.

I'm new to Nano, though a writer all my life.

Peninsula is definitely my region, and shows up as such, but when I look at the calendar to which the PenNano page links, it says:

"Events from one or more calendars could not be shown here because you do not have the permission to view them." And there are no events listed for Oct or Nov.

So, I'm curious if that's because there are events for other chapters on that calendar, and none for us yet, or have I missed something I'm supposed to do to be able to see them?

Forgive me if it's obvious.

Leslie
[NaNoWriMo HQ] NaNoWriMo's Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon

Hello Peninsula Wrimos,

NaNoWriMo HQ is excited to invite you to our second-annual Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon. Come spend a blissful night of eating, drinking, and novel-writing with 200 Bay Area NaNoWriMo participants and staff!

The event is on Saturday, November 15. This year’s theme: NaNo-Noir. We’ll be summoning the spirits of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett with chiaroscuro lighting, mood-setting background movies, and writing feats more dangerous than falling in love with a femme fatale. Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt, this will be a night you don’t want to miss.

How it Works:

All funds from the Write-a-thon benefit NaNoWriMo's youth and adult programs. To attend, just raise $200 or more in contributions through your easy-to-set-up Write-a-thon Firstgiving page by November 10.

Everyone who comes will get dinner, drinks, caffeine, a funny dinnertime talk by NaNoWriMo Director Chris Baty on 10 Years of NaNoWriMo Craziness, and a special Night of Writing Dangerously tote bag filled with books, writing software, and edible treats. You'll also have a chance to win raffle prizes such as museum passes, yoga classes, movie tickets, spa treatments, bottles of fine wine, and a baseball signed by Judy Blume.

The top three fundraisers will get to choose from special prizes, including a Dell Inspiron laptop, a 32 GB iPod Touch courtesy of Storyist.com, and an AlphaSmart Neo courtesy of Renaissance Learning.

As soon as you raise $200, send me an RSVP. If you raise $300 or more, you can RSVP for a guest as well. The ballroom has limited seating, so please RSVP as soon as possible!

For more information about the event, including photos and video from last years event, and to see a list of all the exciting raffle prizes, visit our Write-a-thon page.

Any questions? Drop me a line.

Hope to see you all there!
