Sound Off!

I do this every year to find out who's out there, who's returning, who's new, what they're up to, etc.

Please let everyone know who you are!

- How long have you been participating in NaNo, how many years you've won, or are you new to us?
- What genre are you writing this year?
- Where are you located?
- Anything interesting you want to accomplish this NaNo?
- Any ideas that will help us through this NaNo?
- Anything else you want to share with us?

I am extremely excited about this NaNo and hope to meet all sorts of new and interesting people - both face to face and online. I also hope to write 50,000 words that are not crap, but I don't see that happening (the not crap part)!

So tell us all about yourself!

Ken
Breaking Maine into pieces!

Wow, it looks as though NaNo has decided we're a big enough state that they broke us up into smaller pieces!

There's Midcoast, Elsewhere and Portland to Augusta.

I do not know why they decided to do this and I think the break up was done in an odd way. Why way south and way north are lumped together, I don't know.

I'm hoping this means our stat will be broken up into these three groups so we can have a huge in-Maine word feud this year (I'll check into this). It also means that we can have some fun between the three groups.

So make sure you check all three groups. Some might have cross postings, but I'm sure each group will have their own little quirks!

Ken

Challenge!

Since the powers that be have broken up Maine into groups, I think that gives us the perfect opportunity to feud between us rather than seeking out other states to feud with!

I suggest that we have a huge challenge between the four groups - Bangor, Midcoast, Portland to Augusta and Elsewhere.

I checked out the 'Word Count Scoreboard' and it lists both total word count for the region and average word count. I have no clue how many people are in which region, so I think we should go with average word count. It's really the only way to be fair to all.

Also, we really have to be sure our 'Home Region' is correct so our word count is put into the correct region. So, when you have a moment, please check into that so we're all ready for November and our word feud!

GM & jensoda, if you have any ideas to go along with this, please get in touch with Aunt Silly or myself. Heck, if anyone has ideas about this - post or get in touch!

Ken
What areas in Maine have MLs?

Here's what I know for sure so far: Ken and I cover the Greater Portland area of southern Maine; Ken will be doubling up this year and doing the Augusta area, as well; Jen has the midcoast area of Belfast/Camden/Rockland; and Goldenmane has the Bangor area.

MLs and/or Co-MLs are definitely needed in many places, as organizers, cheerleaders, coordinators, supporters--and to give out cool swag! The folks at NaNo headquarters don't go out and recruit, though. It's up to individuals to decide to be MLs for their area.

Here are two ways that people can help:

1. If you're an ML this year and I didn't mention you above (because I didn't know), please speak up here and let everyone know who and where you are.

2. If you think you'd be interested in being an ML or Co-ML for your area, please contact someone who already is an ML to find out what you need to do and get for your area--the sooner, the better.

What does an ML do?

Every year we have a lot of new people sign up. They have all sorts of stuff thrown at them, one of which is this whole ML thing. Rather than let you flounder out there I thought I’d give a brief idea of what us crazy MLs do around here and out in your region.

It’s our job to get the word out about NaNoWriMo. We go out and talk to local media, let them know about NaNo so maybe we can get a bit of news paper and/or radio time. We also try to put out as many NaNo fliers and posters as possible in places people will see them so more people can discover the wonder that is NaNoWriMo.

While getting the word out about NaNo is very important, the biggest thing we do is support you. We’re here to help you through the crazy month of 50,000 words.

We set up get togethers and parties for our local areas. We try to get as many of you out of your writing caves and meeting other writers who are in the same boat as you. While meeting others online is great, the comradery that comes from meeting other writers involved in NaNo face to face is immeasurable. Not only might you meet some great friends, you get to see that there are others out there doing NaNo who are not completely insane (as I always think I am at about November 15th).

We also set up kick off parties and TGIO Parties.

But it’s not only in person that we’re here to help. We’re also here for you online. If you need something, please feel free to post a thread here, PM one of us, join the Maine NaNo Yahoo Group ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nano_maine/ ) or even email us if you need to. We’re here for you! It does not matter if you want to laugh, cry, celebrate, kvetch, threaten a character, ask if we think a mongoose might look good in hair ribbons, etc. If you don’t feel comfortable asking something in front of the group, please do feel free to get in touch with one of us privately.

We’re also up for any great ideas you might have.

There are a bunch of us crazy MLs scattered across the state. We’ll all introduce ourselves so you know who we are, where we’re located and how we can be reached!

So please get involved in any and all ways you feel comfortable and possibly some ways that are a bit beyond your comfort zones. We hope to see you out there, as well as in here!
