Anyone else NaNoing at Aber Uni? I'm a fresher and slightly terrified by the idea of NaNo and my first semester at university happening at the same time. I must be crazy. I feel sorry for my flatmates.

I wouldn't worry, first term is the time for doing crazy things as a student - that way you get the craziness out of the way & can then settle down afterwards & end up with a good grade :-)

PS Am not a student, sorry, am moving to near Lake Vyrnwy probably during November...

Hi LadyPenelope,

I'm not at Aberystwyth, but I have been through my degree (currently doing PhD at Cardiff). As I recall, first term might not be such a bad time to do Nano - your workload probably won't be too bad, although it does depend on what subject you're doing. My best advice is to make sure you know when all your essays and assignments are due as soon as possible, and get as much done now as you can. You'll probably have to be a bit more organised than most freshers, but it'll stand you in good stead later on. However, don't forget about having some fun too!

Good luck!
Melanie

I used to go to Aberystwyth University, but graduated this year. Still live in Aberystwyth though, just couldn't let the place go in the end. Since I'm stuck in the realms of seemingly perpetual unemployment I thought I'd give this NaNoWriMo thing a go so I can indulge my delusions that some day I'll be a writer...

And I wouldn't worry if you're only in your first semester. In mine I had to write three 2,500 word essays one night after the other (including research for them all) due to a colossal cock-up and miscalculation on my part (read: not bothering to check any of my essay deadlines until about a week before any of them were due) and I still did fine so it is entirely possible to do.

I'm NaNoing in Aber! Did it for the first time in my first year too - and won - so fingers crossed you can do it too!

Wait till you're doing it as a third year. It's going to be crazy.

I'm a postgrad at Aber taking scriptwriting and having a go at Nanowrimo for the first time this year.

I don't think you'll bother your flatmates much though Lady Penelope unless you find you can't write unless you're listening to Death metal at full volume, that might annoy them. Teehee.

Heeeeey.

I'm at Aber uni too and I'm a fresher.

Slightly scared about the workload too but it should work out well! This is my first time doing nanowrimo too. We will have to encourage eachother to reach to 50,000 word goal!

This is a completely wild guess based tangentially on your username, and I shall be very amazed if I'm actually right, but I have to ask: you wouldn't happen to go to Sci-Fi and Fantasy Society, would you? And have borrowed Doctor Who S3 off the curly-haired treasurer? If so, I am that treasurer. Small world.

If not, well, hello anyway! And seriously, you Freshers (all of you!) have nothing to worry about. Nothing you do counts this year, so all you have to do is pass.

Bethamint, I am just finishing up the masters in scriptwriting (I take it you've just started?) and NaNoing for the first time this year. I am also in the realm of the perpetually unemployed although I notetake for the university but have yet to be paid....waaaah lol.

If anyone wants a meet-up, chat, brainstorm, writing race (lol) or whatever then I can be found procrastinating in one of several locations including; HO Library, Student's Union, Arts centre cafe, Fresh ground or the orangery. My picture is on my profile :)

I am aiming for 100,000 words, somewhat ambitious maybe for my first NaNo, but being a scriptwriter I figure I can do it!!

Wow, that IS ambitious.

And yeah, I just started the masters.
Actually, I'm really struggling with this word count because for Nanowrimo you're basically expected to waffle on and not worry too much about if it's good or not and Terry Bailey has basically drilled into my head that you shouldn't say more than you really need to and that you should always assess whether or not it's actually necessary to keep everything you write. I'm just having to fight the urge to go back and edit myself!

Yeah I know, my inner editor is itching to alter what I have written so far!! I am 1000 words behind though (as I am aiming for 100,000 instead of the 50,000) so I have to do like 4500 words today in order to catch up!! Argh! I mentioned NaNo to Terry by the way and the fact that you were doing it (hope you don't mind!) He might be nicer to you about deadlines (lol!) There are some new modules on the course that my year didn't get to do (the TV ones) are they any good? I never really wanted to write for television (well if it's something really cool like Torchwood I wouldn't say no!) but film is more my style so I didn't really mind not doing the TV modules on the MA. Anyway will shut up now; Terry rocks doesn't he (even if he did nurture our inner editors a bit too much!)

P.S: I am going to be in Fresh ground later (7:30pm) till they close most likely, (horse riding social) you are welcome to interrupt if you are around then we can talk NaNo (don't worry if you're not though; we are so gonna have to organise an Aber NaNo meet up!) :)

I'm up for a meet-up sometime! Though I may have to miss it if it's this week - got so much to do in the way of assignments! (Which is also why my word count's a little stunted - the Department has, in their wisdom, set a portfolio due one Monday, another one due the next, and a Project meeting in the middle. And then Reading Week starts the very day the last one's due in - and nothing else till December. So I figure I'll let it slack this week and then during Reading Week, lock myself in my room and write like crazy.)

And I wouldn't say no to writing for Torchwood either, and I've never written a script in my life!

Well if other people are OK to meet in reading week for a write-a-thon then we can do that! When is it by the way (I need to know becuase I am a notetaker....no-one tells us anything lol) Anyway, yes let me know. My favorite haunt in Aber is Fresh ground, (or campus when I am notetaking) so let me know and we shall meet somewhere, sometime lol.

Hope everyone's novels are going well, I am about 2000 words behind (from yesterday) and I haven't written anything today yet either....eek! Will catch up tomorrow (it's my day off!)

Reading week for Theatre, film and television is next week, I'm pretty sure.
I'd definitely be up for a write-a-thon then, I have an essay due on November 17th (sigh) so I'm really trying to push and get ahead with my Nano word count so I can take a few days off to get the essay done without falling too far behind.

(and Nazdaq, yeah, Terry definitely rocks! )

I'm in Coleg Ceredigion, in the Aber branch, so I'm pretty close to you guys if you're organising anything. I can't fathom how you guys are managing to juggle a first year at Uni with NaNoWriMo. Good luck!

waiting on my supervisor to read a first draft of my film script (and guess how long it will take?) Precisely the same amount of time as NaNo, so it's fine. :)
