To lose someone you love is to alter your life for ever. You don't get over it because 'it' is the person you loved. The pain stops, there are new people, but the gap never closes. How could it? The particularness of someone who mattered enough to grieve

Whether this is the first year or the tenth year you've done NaNo, it means something to all of us. Well, it takes a lot of dough to make this happen every year, and one easy way we can give back is by donating just a little. We know that times are tough right now, so we're working on some ways to make fund raising fun and to spread it around a little. Watch this space for further developments!

I mentioned this in the pep talk email last night--NaNo needs us! Even if you don't have the cash to send them, there are little ways you can help out this month. The Donating While Broke page explains them--it can be as simple as using a particular search engine for the rest of the month.

One thing I wanted to try but haven't quite gotten around to was a pledge drive. There's a link on the page to something called FirstGiving, where you set up an account and people donate to NaNo in your name, essentially. That's an awesome idea and I'd really encourage you to do it. I'm going to try hitting up my family, saying, "For every 5,000 words I write, would you be willing to donate $2?" It won't be a whole lot, but if I get 5 people to pledge and write 60K, that's $120, which is way more than I can afford to donate myself.

Think about it--what creative way can you find to give back to NaNoWriMo?
