So, what's everyone working on?

I'm going to do an scifi-action-adventure novel.

IF i can write... well, I'm working on that...

Hi fellow Rhode Islanders.

This is my third year working on this. The first year I had an idea what I wanted to do, but last year I went in 100% cold. Looks like so far, I'll be doing that again this year, unless I come up with an idea between now and then.

Hello everybody,

I have three possible plot bunnies I will be hunting this year. The most likely contender features an jaded research assistant living in an extraordinarily fractured future. As strange as it sounds, I'm working on writing something "lighter" this year...lets see if I can keep the angst bunnies at bay.

This will be my sixth NaNo. Whoo! I usually do science fiction, but this year I'm going to try to steer away from that.

The last two years have been the first two books in an epic saga that was largely pre-planned, but those manuscripts need a lot of work and I'm not comfortable pushing forward on that track at the moment. As a result, this year I'm going in with nothing but an initial idea and I'll see where it takes me.

My main character is a revenge coach. Sort of like Will Smith in Hitch, only with petty revenge instead of romance.

I've done this twice before, different user name (my old e-mail is now inaccessible to me, *and* I don't remember my password, but I used to be Ladybard and I did this in 2003 and 2004). In any case, I have lots and lots of ideas, but haven't settled on anything yet. I may try writing some characters that have been hanging around with me since I was quite young. Or I may write something totally "not me" and see where I go with it.

This will be my first attempt at NaNo so I'm really not sure if I know what I'm getting myself into :) I'm going to try a light hearted YA fantasy and hopefully have fun with it all.

This is my first time doing NaNo. I'm pretty insane for doing it because Im in school AND I never have time to just time down and type out a story.
But I'm giving it a shot just to challenge myself.

I have a ton of ideas floating around in my head but I finally narrowed it down to one...or a few. I'm not really sure what category to put it in. Adventure/Fantasy/Romance/Sci-fi/ who knows what else. It's a doozy and hopefully I'll be able to do it properly.

Good luck to everyone else! 8D

Like several of you, I'm new to to these shenanigans. The majority of my time is devoted to my fresh-out-of-the-oven daughter. So that's a strike against me getting this done. The second strike is the Xbox that my wife bought me for my birthday. In short, challenges abound this November and hopefully I have the fortitude and agility to get this thing done anyway.

I've been challenged by some of my friends to write a choose-your-own-adventure style novel. Overly ambitious? Probably. The subject is still something that I'm working on. I have several ideas but I don't think they lend themselves well to the genre. Specifically, I've been in love with Steampunk since I was a rambunctious teenager many years ago. While it's a fun setting I don't think that it's accessible enough to use as a backdrop for my story. Oh well, something will happen and I'm positive there will be many "Save draft before exiting program? Yes/No? No"

Hello I am new to all of this. This will be the first year that I participate.
As far as coming up with an idea I want this to be all from scratch. So in order to have plenty of ideas floating through my head I have stoped writing until November 1's.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

This will be my fifth nano, and my fourth novel. I'm actually going to be using Nano to expand the current novel I'm working on to a full length of 80k. I'm working on getting my current novel to 30k, in preparation of nano insanity.

I tried NaNo last year, but I didn't finish. This year I'm going to try a post-apocalyptic western.

Ugh... no idea. I tried last year, but failed a week in or so, and I'm terrible at motivating myself. But I really need something to get me writing, and I have a lot of little details floating around in my head. I might try to write 10 or 12 short stories instead of a novel, but I'm not sure yet.

Hi hi! My first attempt at this whole novel writing thing...

I'm going in with a rough idea based off a vivid dream from months ago. It's kind of a girl + friend+ wacky comrades face adventure and try to save the world thing.

I guess that would be fantasy?

This'll be my first time trying NaNo, and my first time trying to write anything novel-length in years, so it's kind of crazy and scary and I have no idea how I'm going to even come close to 50,000 words. I'm trying to write a supernatural thriller sort of thing (so it'd be loosely categorized as fantasy or action-adventure, I guess) from the point of view of a socially anxious university student and his therapist.

This is my sixth Nanowrimo. I'm making some attempt at planning this year, although I still don't know the middle or end of my story and I hear that's kind of important. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a dystopic island society, corporate espionage and a pair of serial-killing ghost hunters. But I'm not sure yet.

Hi all,

I tried this last year but ended up getting caught up in a lot of personal stuff. This year I'm trying to get myself all hyped up by reading a bunch of my favorite books and the ones my friend sent me for my birthday. I plan on writing some fantasy/scifi novel, I have a lot of good ideas in my head but I really hope to try and just sit down and write whatever comes to mind. I got a muse this time around, my cat I rescued this past early spring, she always hangs around being supportive and trying to sleep on my laptop ^^. This year my schedule is much better too, before i was in school all day and working all night full time and right now the school portion is out of the equation while I go through a paid apprenticeship.

Life is short. Hell is better.

I'm getting fairly excited about the whole thing now. Have gone so far as to work out word counts and goals for specific days of the week, depending on my work schedule. And my plot is developing: I have some elements of history and the supernatural, some good old fashioned mafia hitmen, Mexican and Italian food, a newly relocated woman with a mysterious past, her neighbor who's older than he looks, and an island that's not always an island. Revenge, betrayal, love of an individual and love of country are all motivating forces.

I think I'm going to make it this time.

Ha, I just completely changed my mind and decided to try writing out this idea I've had for awhile: Mars has been colonized by us, and after several decades Mars gets sick of us basically being the England to their America, and revolt. I'm not good at political intrigue but I'd like to be, so this is meant to be practice. Unless I decide to shift focus to the civilians caught in the middle...

I see a lot of great ideas you are all going to be working on! This is my first year doing it, and I'm looking forward to the challenge. I've been tossing around my ideas and characters for awhile but am just beginning to jot down character notes, etc. Mines a coming of age story with supernatural elements and more of a thriller/mystery. Look forward to meeting some of you at the sched. write ins.

I decided at the last minute that I will be doing Nano this year after all. I've done it for three years, skipped a year last year, and now I'm back. :) This year I'm doing a quasi-epic sword-and-sorcery fantasy.

This is my first. I'm working on a fantasy-action-adventure story. Has anyone actually gotten their's published?

What would you recommend to be a good novel-writing software? Word is for Business writing, and so that's out of the option. I've tried Liquid Story Binder XE, but I don't like the interface much. Anything else?

If you have a PC I'd recommend using Word. I've found in the past it's easier to write on and with an adjustment of the spelling and grammar and moving the paragraphs to double spaced it works pretty well.

There was a blog entry on how to format Word for a manuscript but I didn't bookmark it of course, if I find it I'll repost the link.

If you're on a Mac, I'd recommend the same thing or Scrivner.

Having had to bail almost immediately last year, and having no new ideas since then, and having last year's idea still haunting me daily ever since, I'm going with that again. I do like this story and characters very much, so I'm happy about this.

As for mechanisms, I recommend OpenOffice for anyone using Linux or PC. I believe the full-featured release for Mac is finally ready, or will be very soon. (There have been some problems with earlier Mac verisions, I understand.) This is free software, and having used it during its development over the years, I have to tell you, it's not as good as MS Word: it's better in many ways. I am one of two editors at a local newspaper who use Open Office exclusively; I also used it exclusively for a research paper I was commissioned for earlier this year. I recommend it highly.

For PC, Word will do just fine for most documents, and I've used it several times for Nanowrimo with no problems. I only recommend making offboard backups from time to time, perhaps every 5k-10k words. In some rare cases, you can fatally corrupt these files. In fact, if you use a laptop or portable word processor, offboard backups should be regular practice anyway, because these platforms are so vulnerable.

This is myyyyyyy...geez, what is it? Fifth or sixth NaNo, and I've never gotten past maybe 2K, but I will at least break 10K this year.

My plot is kind of a historical LGBT romance thing? Maybe sort of YA, too. I dunno.

But, yeah, w00t for NaNo!

This is my first Nano...though I've been writing for years, I hesitated to do this in the past. This year I decided to go for it.

I had a first line pop into my head...so I'm starting with that and seeing where it takes me. Unfortunately, its not taking me anywhere tonight - watching the election returns is too distracting!
