Hi everyone -
We're starting to lay out plans for write-ins and gatherings throughout November, and I need some information from everyone to help with the planning process. Could you please tell me:

1. What part of town you live in (cross streets are especially helpful)
2. Any good writing spots in the area? (coffee shops, libraries - places you know we'd be welcome)
3. What time to day do you prefer for write-ins (We've got nights owls and early birds, people with day jobs, and swing shifters...)

Thanks, and I'll start posting events soon :)

hi!

i know a lot of nanoers live in central tucson, but i'm out east around golf links & kolb--anyone near this part of town?

i remember last year the bookman's at speedway & wilmot had several open shifts for their meeting room--free wifi, so like that. plus, books everywhere! (yes, yes...all very distracting).

my work schedule has me up very early (4am) and out by 2pm, so any write-ins scheduled mid to late afternoon would be great--weekends, i'm open to anything. :)

thanks!
laurie

Bookmans has a note on their events page that the community rooms are closed to the public as of March 31st, but I'll check around and see if they're still allowing community use.

Quote:
Bookmans will soon be remodeling our stores to provide you and all our customers a better and broader selection of merchandise. In order to make these improvements, we will be closing our community rooms and reconfiguring that area. We know this may be upsetting to many long-time supporters of Bookmans who have used these spaces. We are proud to have been able to provide you with a place to meet for so many years, and hope for your understanding as we transition to make Bookmans an even better place. At this time, we are only booking the community rooms through March 31, 2008. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the store manager.

Hi, Laurie,

I'm at 22nd and Kolb. and available from 5pm M-Th. Anytime Fri,Sat, or Sun.

There's a library on Wilmot, north of Broadway and another on 22nd and Columbus. I know the Wilmot branch has meeting rooms.

I'm at Grant and 1st, so I'm fairly central. (And for those who don't have cars and are on my way-ish somewhere, no, I don't mind giving rides, though I do prefer to meet someone before I do so.)

The Black Rose Caffe is, of course, a favorite haunt, and last time I was there (with Xander) they seemed pretty open to the idea of NaNo stuff there, which is great because I rather like hanging out there. (...Which I'm sure Kristi knew, but I like BRC, I'll take any chance to talk them up XD)

Woods library might be an option as long as they actually give us a meeting room this time. ;)

I'm still out on the southside of town (Mission and Irvington). I do work at the University, well, at least for now! :)

However, I'm not always able to make write-ins/gatherings, so don't worry about me.

Also- I've been using libraries for my craft meetups, and they have been great. Like the Columbus Library. The Sundays are usually pretty free for them it seems like. Himmel Park on Speedway and Treat. Woods Library on First near Prince.

Speaking of the Black Rose (it's a great place to meet btw), we have a small crit group that meets there on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. We're looking for some new blood if anyone's interested. Next meeting is Monday, the 6th at 7pm.

Consider this an invitation. nanomail me for details if you like, or just show up.

I'm at 5th street and Columbus, but I pretty much spend my life at the university. But I also have a car, so I won't be confined to this general area. The only spot I thought of was Bookman's, which seems to be out, so basically I'm not helpful ;) Best times of days for me are evenings during the week (anytime after 5), Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoons.

I am in North Tucson and do not know the south or east part of Tucson at all. I am hoping for some day write-ins as well as evenings. A new cafe opened near the new Bashas on River I will check it out for write-ins but it may be too far north for someone coming from south or east. I th central is think is best. Are the Borders bookstores still welcoming the writers?

They're still welcoming writers, but not their books ;)

Look forward to seeing y'all wherever/whenever.

Woods Library was ... cozy *cough* last time!

I live near Glenn and Campbell. There's Coffee Xpress in addition to Bookman's and the library. I don't know how late Blue Willow is open, but that's also an option.

I live near Golf Links and Kolb, but I'm pretty flexible when it comes to places to meet. :) Bookmans or the Wilmot-Murphy library would be nice though.

Hope I find time to go to one this year!

I live on the west side, but I can't think of of any places off-hand. Possibly Mission Library, Mission Rd/Ajo Way, but it's more southwest and I'm not sure about their meeting room usage. It's also a fairly small branch. I work in central town, so many of the already mentioned spots sound like good possibilities. I'm looking forward to joining in on the write-ins!

I'm up in Marana, past Tangerine, so I'll be joining in on the more northern write-ins. Missed them last year, for some reason, but I think staying local will really help my chances of actually staying on task, since I failed last year quite miserably. <^^>;

I'm south east tucson, myself (south of south-east tucson, but close enough, anyway). thursday evenings are great for me, but I'm pretty flexible, including day-light hours, most days of the week.

I live near Country Club & Prince and work downtown, so pretty much anything in mid-town is fair game for me. I'm also game for trying new places during NaNo, so a bit of travel doesn't bug me.
We had a lot of great write-ins at Cutter's Point coffee shop last year - Orange Grove & Thornydale (NW side, near the Costco and I-10), so I'm sure I'll put in at least a couple of appearances there.
Has anyone been to Crave (Broadway near Swan) since they re-opened w/ new owners? That and the Barnes & Noble at Broadway/Rosemont have been good writing spots in the past.
My local favorite is Cafe Diva @ Campbell & Blacklidge.
I finally have a laptop with decent battery life, so outdoor cafes and such are a lot more feasible!

I live 2.5 blocks from the intersection of Speedway & Campbell.

I don't know of good places, others seem to have a good handle on this. (Anyone checked out Ike's Coffee, Speedway/Country Club area?)

I will be doing 90% of my writing in the morning before going to work, but I'm happy to join the occasional evening group session. Had a blast in 2006 at the BRC and Cafe Diva.

Hey,

I'm living on campus at the U of A, primarily a night owl, and I'm willing to bet there are places on campus I could book for a couple hours. Haven't looked into it though.

Mission Library is easy for me. Their meeting room was nice. Not huge, but nice. --and I didn't get hot. :)

Woods Library was okay - it was warm in there on a Sunday afternoon, and they put us in the small meeting room. If I go there again, I'll ask for a bigger room. (for my craft 'n chat group)

That was quite the unique circumstance (@ Woods) - apparently we had the reservation in advance, but Rep. Gabrielle Giffords requested it for her solar summit, and we got bumped to the employee breakroom. A bunch of writers can't hold a candle to an elected official on a mission, apparently *grin*

I live 'way up north near Tangerine Road. Anywhere we meet is a long way. And everything in Oro Valley closes up tight by 8 or 9 o'clock. So I'm resigned to hiking it across the Tucson Basic to wherever we meet.

Don't forget the IHOP on Oracle and Roger Roads. They've got a separated room, and they're open 24 hours. Easy to find, too.

Crave isn't a great place these days--not open as late and the prices got jacked, apparently. And I hear there is a TV! Scandal!

I live midtown, Broadway/Columbus, but I hope to make official write ins in the evening wherever they are.

I have created a map of (more or less) every place mentioned so far. Quite a good number of places have been mentioned so far.

Tucson NaNo 2008

As November nears, I will continue to add places. I will also add in hours and contact information. I will gladly add anyone who wants to collaborate on the map. The more the merrier, I suppose. Reply here, or to my nanowrimo email address or sprawn.x@gmail.com. I think you need a google "identity" to collaborate. If someone else is already doing a map, I would be happy to collaborate on that one and nix the one here.
