Hey all, my post was one of the ones that got lost in the server crash disaster, but I thought that this gives me an opportunity to introduce myself with my brand new title of ML of the Pittsburgh region!!
My name is Jenn (although I go by Fox to avoid those confusing situations where 2/3 of the people in the room are named Jenn ;), and this year marks my seventh NaNoWriMo endeavor! I started in 2002, and I've been through so many different types of seasons that I can probably offer advice for *almost* any problem you've got to get to your word count. I've been through starting a week late (2002, as I didn't find out that NaNoWriMo existed until November 6), crazy college schedules, crazy grad school schedules, breaking up in November, getting married in November, working full time... That about covers it :)
That said, I am super wicked excited to be ML. It's been one of my hopes and dreams since 2003, but it never worked out until now. I presently am living in Burbank, but I will be back in the land of the black and gold in just over three weeks, right in time for the start of the madness! I'll be living in Bloomfield, but as in the other five years I was in the 'Burgh for NaNoWriMo, I will probably do most of my writing at the 61C in Squirrel Hill.
I've got loads of exciting ideas (some more practical than others... the 24-Hours-Straight- of-Novel-Writing idea just doesn't seem quite as plausible anymore as it did in the middle of the night when I thought it up), and I would love to hear what everyone else has in mind. If people are up for it, I'd love to have a midnight start event at 12:01am November 1st (as in, just moments after the end of Halloween), somewhere like Squirrel Hill Eat n Park, where they won't mind if a bunch of us with laptops show up to write and sabatoge the Midnight Buffet.
Also, I can't remember if it was just here in LA or across the whole site, but last year, we had a calendar that listed 'write-ins' around the city. Basically, there would be three or four times a week that were designated to be writing nights, so you could pop into wherever you wanted, whenever you had a chance, and hopefully run into other writers to share ideas.
One more thing, do you guys prefer using the forums for ML/region notifications, or would you rather e-mail? I think in the past, Necantha used e-mails primarily, but I'm not sure what you guys did last year. And does anybody have LiveJournals, or has everyone moved on to Blogspot and all of those things? I can start a Pittsburgh NaNo LJ community (we formerly had one) if anyone is interested. Let me know!
I suppose that is all for now from me, but I'm sure you'll be hearing from me a million more times in the next two months. Welcome to all of our newcomers, and welcome back to everyone else who has decided to give this crazy month another shot!
Go Steelers,
Fox.

Hi and welcome :D I'm only a year behind you in experience but November is a real kicker for me (something -always- comes up that drowns my novel in drama and despair), so I haven't won... yet. This year's the year! I hope that at least I can drain you of ideas to keep my novel going when week 2 hits and I realize I still don't have a plot. XD
I'd love to pop in some time with the Pgh crowd, since I feel rather lonely all the way out here at IUP. I've just got my first ever official full-time job since graduation in August and I'm expecting it to be a bit busy, plus I live in Indiana where there is a terrible lack of NaNo participation (sadly, I ML'd one year hoping to change that, and then realized that holding write-ins in a college town is like herding cats, and got horribly depressed about the whole thing. The next year's ML didn't fare much better). That being the case I can't promise regular check-ins but I'll at least be active on the forums where I proudly procrastinate every year!
I have both LJ and Blogspot and check up on the forums -and- my email, so I'll be well informed no matter what you decide to use to inform us :P I'm hoping to make it to at least one write-in, quite possibly the kick-off one (that depends on whether or not we go trick-or-treating with my future in-laws' kids this year).

Hey!
I get to play in Squirrel Hill all the time now since I started college (Chatham). I can't wait to join all the other crazies in the area.
Do you think it would be to hard/impossible/lonely to hold a few write-ins during the day? Like Lunch-Break Madness or something like that? I'd love to play with all the other crazies here, but I go to school in Pittsburgh and go back home to Cranberry (thereabouts, anyway) after three-ish.

Please start a PGH Nano LJ comm! I'll help if you want/need it. Feel free to PM me.
61C sounds like an awesome location for writing as well. I would also suggest the Bee Hive in South Side because they have those fun rocky benches and delicious chai tea.
I prefer email to be alerted about events, because I check that every day, and I may not have time to check the forums every day (read: I'll get distracted if I do and not get my writing done).
I'm really looking forward to November! Maybe we should have a pre-nano plot/book discussion get together type thing? I think that would be cool.

Hi Ms new ML! This year is my second Nano. Last year my middle daughter (13 yrs) and I fought over computer time to get each of our novels done. But somehow after a late start (we spent the first 3 days of Nano in Cleveland...ewww) we both managed to finish with time to spare. This year will prove to be even more challengeing as all three of my daughters want to Nano...(one will be in the young writers program). With one old computer, two flash drives and a lot of luck we will all write the month away! I hope that you will be considering the east side for events as I refuse to drive into Pittsburgh unless I have to...I like freeways, not parkways! LOL I really do preferr emails to forum postings...I don't hang out on the net too often, I tend to get distracted! LOL Good luck, and hope to meet you soon!

Hey, Jenn.
This is my first NaNoWriMo, so I'm going to be craving these events. The 61C is a terrific location, so I'm more than happy to go there. I have a LJ and a blogspot account, neither of which I frequently use. I'm content with any means of notification you'd like to use, although e-mail seems the most efficient. I'm also running an online forum for NaNoWriMo Teens, just a little community thing that I'm getting together with some other teenagers to do, so that might keep me a bit busy, too.
Anyway, welcome and congrats on the ML position!

Hey, Fox
I love the 61C / Eat 'n Park idea!! I think an lj community would be great, and have a blogspot as well. But, anyway, Congrats on all the years and experience, hope this year works out really well for you as ML!! And welcome back to Pittsburgh, in a few weeks time!

Hi! Congrats on the ML gig. I'd be interested in a LiveJournal community for Pittsburgh NaNoers; I'm studying abroad until December, so that would be the only sort of regional activity I could be involved in. I also use Blogspot, but LJ is what I prefer. If you start something like that, I'd join. ^_^

Eat n' Park is generally pretty tolerant of shenanigans like writing parties, especially the Sq. Hill one. I am also all for this. However, I find that the 61 C is usualyl cramped and hard to get tables, and for some reason, always cold. So my vote is for Eat n' Park

Hello and welcome!
I'm excited to actually attend an events this year as I didn't get to last year. Sadly, I lack a laptop, but I can come to give verbal support!
E-Mail is much easier to check on a daily basis since most of us are already checking it often anyway. And an event or two on the Southside would be awesome!!

Smite the Steelers. Let's go Penguins! :'DDDD
I hope we get to do some fun stuff this year! Hopefully we can do some stuff in other counties too, since I can't get up to Pittsburgh. E-mail is better for me than anything, but I'll keep an eye out. Good luck as our new ML!!

Hey Jenn I'm Deanna! This'll be my first NaNo ^^ Im attending Pitt so could we try an on Pitt campus thing sometime, like at the Cathedral maybe? (Even if it is only once out of the many meet-ups) Cause catching buses crazy late sounds fun but not like an all the time thing. And starting 12:01 November 1st sounds like lots of fun! And, crazy as this may sound, I'm all for a 24 hour writing session as long as it's not a Sunday to Monday or weekday thing (my professors will kill me if I fall asleep flat on my face in class)
And e-mail would work best for me. I check that daily, there's nothing else that I'm that devoted to anymore ^^;

You can always hand write a few sections!
Cathy (aka Cathedral of Learning) is probably not the best place for write-ins or meet ups. Cathedral Cafe might work alright, but they close early every day and the common room benches are kind of uncomfortable. Also I imagine there would be some noise going on and we'd probably be a pain to everyone else. But there are lots of other places around Oakland. Posvar Hall would work, Caribou coffee, Starbucks, etc. Also I mentioned this in another thread, but I do have a car, so if any Pitt students want to carpool I'm down as long as you give me gas money. =)

Hey, Pitt folk,
If we get a good day (HA!) some time in Nov., maybe we could all get together on Soldiers and Sailors lawn or a park or something to write together! Wouldn't that be nice? It's a shame we don't get nice November days...
And hey, is anyone interested in the Gist Street Readings? It's shortly off campus on Gist street, and it's a series of readings that always have one literature and one poetry once a month. The next one is Nov. 7th, in case you're interested, and the website is http://www.giststreet.org/ . It has homemade bread! Let me know if you're interested via NaNoMail or something.

Hey there Pittsburghers!
I don't live in Pittsburgh-- just crashing the forum. I'm a former 'burgher-- Chatham alumnae actually. Now I'm in Australia. I went back for a visit last November and need to say that PITTSBURGH IS THE BEST CITY!! I'm so jealous that you guys get to NaNo at the 61C on beautiful autumn days. Anyway, the reason I'm here is that I'm planning on setting my novel in Squirrel Hill and was hoping I could use you guys as a resource. Like I could ask, does that RiteAid still exist on Murray Ave? Does Eat-N-Park still have a smoking section? And in return, if any of you want an Aussie to appear in your novels, I could help with the dialogue. Bloody oath, she's a beaut!

While I don't know that you actually *do* want these questions answered, I don't care. I'd really rather do this than homework. (Productivity? What?)
There is a RiteAid next door to the JCC at Murray and Forbes. Not sure if that's the RiteAid you mean, though that's the only one I ever saw along Murray. Eat-N-Park doesn't have a smoking section due to our new smoking ban. Most public places cannot have any smoking, but there are scads and scads of exceptions tacked on. There was a big to-do about it in Pittsburgh, and there were lots of articles in the Post-Gazette about how the restaurant and bar owners who can't allow smoking are going to lose so much of their business to those that can and blah blah blah.
Yay, procrastination!

I figured about Eat-N-Park. It was going that way shortly after I left. Funny, though, it was never just about smoking and non, but college kids to the left, family and senior citzs to the right. Guess it's just a hodgepodge now?

Hi Fox! This will be my second year of participation in NaNoWriMo. Last year, I wrote by myself because I figured most group events would probably be attended by college students and maybe they wouldn't be thrilled to welcome someone old enough to be their mother. I'm writing to find out if many middle aged people show up for these events.
Congratulations, Jenn, on becoming our new ML!

Hey SkitTorren, I'm in the North Hills, really close to McKnight road and Northway Mall, and always up for a writing session. So, if you find you're trapped, we can totally meet in wexford or something. Just throwing that out there!
