Hey everyone.

This is my first time doing this, but I own a bookshop in Greer, and would love to host a group at my shop. A couple of my friends and I are going to be meeting at my shop every Saturday during November to support each other. Let me know if you'd be interested.

Obviously I don't qualify to be an ML, since this is my first time.

Greer is kind of far for some of us but those in that area will probably jump on the chance to have a meeting place. We used to have meetings at The Open Book since that was kind of centrally located but since we don't even have an ML this year yet, it would be hard to say. I vote that Jon and Valerie do it again this year if they have the time. I won't be writing on NaNo stuff, but will be working on my state stories as well as doing a blog book tour in November. I will be busy but cheering you all on. Welcome to the group - E :)

Joffre! Welcome to Nano! It's good to see you. Thanks for the offer, I wish we were in the Upstate to participate.

Upstate Nanos, I'll vouch for him. He's a good egg, and he makes great Smoothies.

I love strawberry banana smoothies. Where are you located and what's the name of your store, et cetera. Maybe others will chime in and be available to go there every weekend. Will you give us NaNoers discounts? - lol - only kidding - what kind of prices do you have on the smoothies and what types of books do you carry? E ;0

I'd love to give a discount to NaNoers. This is definitely going to be a support group for everyone, and I'll be needing plenty, since this is my first time.

It's The Silver Chair. www.silverchairbookstore.com. In fact, I just posted a sign-up sheet at http://www.silverchairbookstore.com/nanowrimo. Obviously people can just show up if they want to, but signing up will help build momentum.

And hi Kimberli!

Very nice offer, Joffre, thanks!

And Elysabeth didn't mention it, but she's a bonafide published author. Her new children's mystery, the first in a States series, recently came out. and number two is in the pipes. Maybe you can use a smoothie to bribe her into coming to The Silver Chair for a reading ;o)

If I didn't work insane hours (8 PM to 4:30 AM, with Fri/Sun off), I'd offer to be ML, but I know the classic times for write-ins are... well, times I'd either be working or sleeping.

Having a spot to do write-ins is a great idea, tho. Excellent of you for offering!

Joffre,

That is very close to my home, so I will definitely have to check out your shop. I'd love to come to write-ins there as able.

Thanks for the offer!

Well, Val is going to take the next 24 hours to consider whether or not she will volunteer to ML this year. I, for one, think that different venues might actually help spark creativity. Sure, the Open Book is good, but so was the coffee shop a ffew years ago. It might be good to come up with a different place each week. Especially since our members are a bit spread out at times.

It's always good to have a backup. We did tend to get a bit noisy at times. I still can't believe the owner of the coffee shop didn't kick us out!

Hey guys! :D :D How's everyone been? I can't wait to see ya'll again and meet the new faces.

If I worked a normal job, I'd totally offer to be ML this year (this is my fourth NaNo...crazy stuff). As it is, working retail is NOT condusive to meeting around noon on a Saturday. Especially in November. :P But I reallyreallyREALLY want make some of the meetups this year. My novel /DIED/ last year, mainly because I never had time to actually write with anyone, and it was really depressing.

And Greer is right up my alley, so to speak. I'll definitely have to check out the shop regardless. Please tell me the name is a Narnia reference. ^_^

Also: in regards to the coffee shop, wasn't the owner a friend of Adrian's?

Can't wait to get things started. I'm TOTALLY pumped. :D

Last year, we had write-ins all over town. It worked great. We had the standard Sat. write-in at the Open Book and then mid-week write-ins and a half-way party...at different places all over town. Mellow Mushroom seems to have become the default kick off/TGIO party destination. I'm up for anything...as usual, I won't make it to ALL the events, but I'll be there for some.

Is Scorpion still in town, btw? I know he was a Furman student, so I'm not sure. (He was the ML last year).

What are the chances of getting a write-in in downtown Greenville? Greer is sorta out there.

I might be able to get something going in the VIP area at Coffee Underground since I'm friends with a barista who works there if we want privacy.

Since I work on Broad St. Downtown I'd be totally down for a Write-In at Coffee Underground.

Maybe for a weeknight Write-In?

Weeknights would be great, provided I don't have to close at work. And Coffee Underground is even better. ^_^

Would anyone be adverse toward holding one at the Barnes & Noble on Woodruff Rd? They're open till 11. AND they've got one of their side-shelf displays dedicated to NaNo and writing books. So I'm pretty sure they'd let us hijack a corner of the store for an evening or two.

I wouldn't be. Coffee Underground is a stone's throw away from work, and Barnes and Noble on Woodruff is on my ride home so either one works for me. If we decide on CU let me know and I'll ask Brendon about reserving the vip room.

What nights would you guys want to meet up?
(and are any of you in the irc chat?)

Speaking personally, I can't pinpoint any particular night. So I'll just say, pick an evening, and I'll do my darn'dest to come regardless of location. ^_^

Um, yeah. I'm the ML this year. I'll be taking your ideas and seeing what places are open and when. But the Kick-off party is first, and I'd like ideas for that. It's been at the Mellow Mushroom on Greenville's West End for the past couple of years. Does that still suit or does anyone have another notion? The first day of NaNo is on a Saturday, so do we want to hold it then, or on the previous Friday night?

Let me know what you think!

I honestly don't know what my schedule will be like, so I don't really have any advice on good times for the KO party. I don't think I'd be up for Halloween night though...I'll have my hands full that night.

The prior Friday night might work for me, if that's what you were suggesting.

Mellow Mushroom is fine for me for a party...I think it's too loud for write-ins though.

For write-ins, I like the Open Book. And we had a mid-week write-in at Spill the Beans (Woodruff Rd), I thought the place was a nice place to meet...you have to get a little creative with their tables, but I liked it. Coffee Underground is nice...especially if we are able to get some private space. Last but not least, I think it would be awesome to have at least one of the meetings at The Silver Chair, given that the owner is one of us.:)

I've added the write-ins at The Silver Chair to the NaNo calendar.

I'll add other events as they're planned. If the link doesn't take you to the calendar, let me know.

Damn, my wife and I over on the far side of Clemson... that'd be a REALLY long haul for us to go to... which is a shame because it looks like a wonderful environment!

This is my Third year of NaNoWriMo, Wife's Fourth.

I've got the entire weekend of Halloween off from work, but won't be available that Friday (HUGE party planned). But! I honestly think that a kick-off party on the first day would be fun. And it could be anywhere, so long as I know how to get to it. ^_^ And I'll second all the afore-mentioned locations, but still adding either of the Barnes & Nobles here in town (I'm a B&N freak, I know) as a possibility.

And gratz, Linda, on being the new ML. I just got the email. Don't think I've officially met you yet, but we should have a great time this year. :D

As the spouse of a former ML, I would suggest a kickoff mid-afternoon on the first. Whatever venue we choose will be less crowded and more receptive to a group of people only semi-interested in buying stuff. And Halloween night leaves out a whole bunch of people.

I am able to follow the calendar link, but it is blank.

Thanks, Tony, for letting me know. It's a Google calendar, it's keyed to one of my Yahoo IDs, and I set it to public. There's probably a different URL to access it from outside my log in. I'll see what can be done.

BTW, I think if you're signed in on Yahoo, you should be able to see it. I think...

Good idea about the afternoon of the first. Definitely will consider that.

Was it November that was blank? The calendar comes up with October as its default.

I've also added the Silver Chair write-ins to the Yahoo Group calendar, so if you're a member of Upstate NaNos (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/upstatenano/), you'll find it there, too.
