I am DEFINITELY not a top 40 radio listener, ew. My tastes are eccelectic and most of my favourite bands have been either internet radio finds or friend suggestions.

My MP3 player (and Pandora, of course) will be bogged down with JRock (Larc~en~Ciel, X Japan, Glay), Tsugaru Shamisen (Agatsuma, Yoshida Brothers), Goth Rock (Sirenia, Nightwish), some Classic Rock (The Animals, Nazareth, Aerosmith), and modern rock (in it's varius Metal/Post Grunge/Indie/Alternative forms) (Three Days Grace, A Perfect Circle, Muse)

What are you guys loading up on?

I have a bunch of playlists where I have my music arranged by the mood it creates. I have my Mad mix, my Soothe mix, my War mix, and also an instrumental one. What I listen to depends on what kind of scene I'm working on at the time.

As much as I'd like to believe myself to be ecclectic, I only have a couple of genres I listen to. Some goth-rock, like Nightwish Oomph, and Lacrimas Profundere, but mostly epic metal like DragonForce, Sonata Artica, and Rhapsody of Fire. For some reason, that stuff motivates me far more than most music.

However, I'm do have a few odds and ends in my collection. Some Weird Al, a bit of SNL, one or two Bud Light radio commercials... just things to break up the routine!

I tend not to write to music, because when I get so into the 'zone' I don't even hear the music anymore. The CD can be skipping for a good 20 minutes before I notice, or the battery on my mp3 player will die and I will type away, happily oblivious.

This year, however, my NaNovel is inspired directly from a song and music video, so I will be taking a very different approach to my writing this November. I'll start building playlists soon.

I've got just about everything anyone could ever want, hehe. My music ADD is becoming an issue whenever we listen to my iPod in the car.

Lately I've been listening to lots of Emilie Autumn, Voltaire, Rasputina, Mae, Joanna Newsom, and Gregory & the Hawk.

I usually listen to so-called "post rock" bands like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, or Austin's own Explosions in the Sky (woo!) while writing. Last year, I discovered that My Bloody Valentine was great for getting through difficult sections of my novel, so I'll be putting that back into rotation as well.

Charlie Parker and Miles Davis are always good to keep me writing, too.

I've got other stuff in my iPod, but I can't write to most of it. Anything too heavy or focused on vocals is distracting to me when I write.

Well, I'm currently without an mp3 player, as I sold my iPod in an attempt to live a DRM-free life. And as my partner got laid off the day after I purchased a new computer, I doubt I'll be buying something new anytime soon. But ANYWAY, my computer will have a ton of Rilo Kiley, both Jenny Lewis solo albums, and also just about everything by The Mountain Goats. Also some Michael Penn and Bruce Springsteen, and maybe a little Meatloaf too.

Music is the one thing I need to have going all the time! I can go without, but I would so very much prefer to have it. It's been awhile since I actually spent good chunks of time writing, so I still need to build me some playlists.

I also have very eclectic tastes when it comes to music, but I've found I generally lean towards more epic sounding tunes when I want to lose myself in writing, so I have a lot of soundtracks and scores, as well as a lot of epic-type rock. Not entirely sure that type of music will work with the story I want to do this year, so I may have to spend some time with my music library this week to see what I can put together. :)

I have a writing-music folder that contains music with no risk of being distracted by lyrics: Mellow acoustic-guitar music, Andrea Bocceli foreign-language music, and my favorite, a death-metal band called Atheist, who I would never normally listen to, but really works to block out the world and let me focus on my story.
