Greetings Wrimos!

This is year number two for Cauldron Cafe. We haven't changed much. Added a few more outlets and the WiFi seems to run a little faster for some. The only major change is the comfy new chairs and semi-firm pillows for back support. Each chair has it's own beverage holder so there's a little extra space on your work surface.

If you're new to the place, here's a quick intro.

Whether you're of the faith, or just incorporating it in your writing you are welcome in the Cauldron Cafe. I only ask everyone to play nice and respect each other.

Every day of Nano I'll have a reminder post of where you should be in your word count as well as a Nano Pep Post or Uplifting Words.

We will have 2 writing challenges - with prizes! I'll also try to tag in at least 2 on-line Write Ins (to participate in the on-line write-in's you'll need Yahoo Instant Message - YIM) If you don't have it, you might want to set it up soon so when we start, you'll be all set and I'll have you on my buddy list.

Let's get this Cauldron Bubblin'
Kelly

Hey Cheri

Thanks for the bump. Word is getting around and things should pick up. Gives me time to hang a few more decorations.

I don't need a plot bunny, but a nice magical trick to make my two time periods line up more conveniently would be nice. No? Shucks.

Raven:
Who says you can't pick and choose what you want to use as far as time periods go? It's your novel after all....maybe the newer period is trying to bring back the fashions and whatnot of the previous era?

Me, backstory has stalled....It's raining here today and I'm cold. So I am sitting here playing slots at Pogo. *slaps own hands* I need to get into the swing of things.

Gypsy - no, I'm trying to do pirates and the Haitian slave revolt . . . except that there weren't any pirates then, or at least very few, because too much war was going on and the European countries had the area completely controlled.

I've pretty much decided to find another, less historically-dependent way for my main character to save her brother from slavery - one which will happen much earlier - when pirates really were frequent.

Ah okay....I'm sorry Raven. (Wasn't quite with it because I'd spent the half hour before my message watching two kids (age unknown..but they had to be really young) on Pogo make fools of themselves.

Sounds interesting though...much more interesting than mine is turning out...so far my characters are going to plod around until I can find a plot somewhere. I did find a title though...LOL

the 11 year old though...may not have Saturdays to do his writing...since he's going to start getting Saturday detentions for not doing his homework.

Welcome Welcome :: waving hands in the air :::

It's so great to see familiar faces. I'm sorry it took me a bit to get the place opened up.

I have the muse conference to finish up this week then I'm going to start on goody bags. So you'll want to check back often for The Call. There will be a limited number of them again this year so you'll want that wand ready to point in the right direction.

This is an awesome year. 10 years! That in itself should add to the magic of making it to 50k!

I'm bored...I don't want to start writing a story because I'll probably get too involved and not want to put it away in November. I've already banned myself from the library. Nothing seems to even hold my interest for more than a few minutes.
11 year old and I did make Jack O' Lanterns from construction paper tonight.
Anyone else having issues with what to do with themselves while they wait for the clock to start?

Hiya! I've been around NaNo for a while, but I don't think I was in here last year, sooooI brought goodies! *sets out pan of hazelnut brownies* I've talked to a couple of you before, but in case you don't know me, I'm Angela. I'm 32, live in central IL & this is my 5th NaNo.

I'm pretty anxious to get going too. I've done my annual No Plot? No Problem! reread, lol, I've gone to the invisionfree board where I squirrel away all my writing & set up stuff for the new year, perused the old stuff a bit & read my cheering section (a list of comments people have made on my writing before. Great to have instant cheerleading on days your wordcount drags, lol). Now I'm just trying to tie loose ends on my idea. I have a new graphic novel coming on the third that I'll have to hide away till I finish, lol & I'm loathe to start reading anything lest I can't put it down when the time comes. So basically, just clock watching till kickoff, lol.

This year I'm doing a story that's been rattling around in my head for a while about some of the old gods in living in the modern age. The idea started a while back when I was watching tv & saw an ad for something or other & wondered, if i were a god, how would I feel about once being loved/feared/etc by hundreds, sometimes millions of people & now being used to schill for cars & razors &.... Would it be insulting or a testament to the power of your name that people still think it holds sway or has some iconic value? So I got to thinking about what it might be like to have been such a person once (and admittedly still in certain circles ;) )& how they'd view things now? What would you do in the world today if you were a god?? Zeus, Lord of Olympus: Weatherman?? Who could you possibly talk about all you've seen, done, been to aside from others like yourself. That popped this image into my head of this totally disparate group congregating at the same corner table in some diner somewhere every so often swapping 'war stories'.

So, that's what I'm going to shoot for. I'm planning on doing a chapter of current/diner things alternated with a chapter of one god spotlighted, either where they're at in life now or reminiscing about some time in the past. I have a couple favorites, but my cast list isn't really set yet. I'm thinking about five, but maybe prepping eight just in case something doesn't work out or I suddenly need a mention or cameo or whatever. I'm trying to come up with some sort of....I hate to call it 'moral', to the story, 'theme' maybe. Something to tie it the stories a bit more than just people; even particularly extraordinary people, sitting around drinking coffee & talking. What do you guys think? Too out there an idea? Anybody have a favorite god you think might feature nicely?

Hiya Bristow, We're somewhat close to each other. I like your premise for your story!! I'd like to read it when you're through (if you'll let me)...maybe Hermes as a bicycle messenger? Eros as an owner of something like eHarmony or a video dating service? Hephaestus maybe runs a machine shop? Hades as a funeral director?

I just finished making calls to two schools to set up parent/teacher conferences. At least this year they're on the 30th and 31st...past four years that I've been doing NaNo they were always the first week in November...that really cut into my writing time! LOL

Today I plan on sitting down and getting more of my backstory down until hubby gets up and we have to go get groceries (I hate shopping!!). I'm having a bit of trouble with the part where my characters were school age. I can't decide if they were home-schooled or went to public school. One has a temper and probably would have turned her classmates into slugs if they teased her in anyway. LOL Of course there's another dilemma, why 4 sisters (the youngest is 28) have never married. *bangs head on desk*
*plods off to the corner*

Curse? Not on them necessarily, but on the man they choose to marry/fall in love with?

Or, even funnier, guys too frightened to be around them!

Good luck!

Does it have to be a god, or can it be a figure from mythology? I always thought Narcissus actually BELONGED in the 20th & 21st centuries!

Hey Angela!

Welcome to the group. Happy to see your name pop up.
As happy as I am in MO, there are still some things I miss about IL - one being my writer buds.

I like your storyline. I love putting new twists on things.

Wow, Gypsy. I love your sister concept. Sounds like my Seasonal Sisters with a witchy twist. Wish I'd thought of it. LOL

Scheduling and planning ahead is a key to getting through Nano. I've already had a chat with my daughter, who understands how important it is I write even though I'm there to visit. hehe

Okay - Now that I think I've caught up with everyone... I'll see if I can break the boredom.

Yeah, this final couple of weeks before kick-off is a drag. I'm using it to clear the decks and get some minor projects out of the way so I can focus on the new book. I'm determined to hit 50k plus this year. Since Harl. has lowered their word count, I should be able to write a publishable novel in 30 days. Notice I said 'write', not edit/polish LOL We gotta start somewhere.

Nano is for spewing forth the story line. The clean-up on Isle 2 comes later.

Taking a head count... does everyone have YIM ?
If so, I'd like to set up a couple of on-line write in's. So let me know what your YIM is so I can start a buddy list for Cauldron Cafe.

I've been wanting to start this series all summer. I even started Summer's story (don't fret I'm not cheating, I'm working on Spring's story for NaNo).

I have YIM (created a new account just for this)..will NaNomail anyone with that would like to have it.

Ok, to cover a few questions -

Gypsy: Hiya :D Thanks, I hope it turns out well. And sure, you can read it.

Cheri: I'd thought of gods originally, but I'm fairly flexible. Narcissus would fit in real nicely now.

Kelly: Hi! Ty. I have YM & AIM & am always up for chatting if anybody's interested. An online write-in'd be great. I remember doing them before, they can be really helpful & fun! My contacts are in my sig, but just in case they're not showing atm; aim - lumatam, ym - lollypop1407

Wow - lots of comments since my last post! Very interesting ideas floating around.

I'm having problems with school and NaNo already. I promised myself that school had to come first, which means that my planning is taking a definite back seat. I did a bit on Wednesday, but yesterday and today, I had extra work from home, which meant less time "tutoring", so less time for homework/writing. And I'm exhausted now.

Of course, I also forgot to include my e-mail address for the interlibrary loan items I want to borrow, so they'll send it to my school e-mail... and I have no idea what the password is. I haven't managed to check my school e-mail once yet. So, I'm going to just have to go and ask all the time.

Edit: Whoops, forgot to mention - my YIM is Vorona_394, but I usually have it turned off. As long as I know in advance about a write-in, I should be fine, but I might not be up other times.

Yes, she did Pixie.

Adrian Michell will be a year old on Nov. 22nd. I'm planning on being there for the birthday. Things a bit different this year. My time will be my own and I have the shiny new laptop hubby bought me for Christmas :-) I can get the writing in this year. I"m also hoping to be ahead in wc before I go up so I don't fall behind.

Among the many projects on my to-do list for today, I plan to work on Nano Welcome packets. As last year, due to mailing costs, I'll only be giving a set number away again. So be watching and have those wands ready to point and click to get yours!
