Well, here we all are. But who are we? Inquiring minds want to know! Everything! So do tell.

If you’d like some starters, try these:

  • Have you done NaNo before? Are you new to Austin, but not to NaNo?
  • Do you know what you’re going to write? Have you picked a genre? A character? A title? Anything?
  • What’s your word count goal - are you trying for 50,000? Setting your sights higher or a little lower?
  • Will we see you in person at a write-in or party? (Sure hope so! )
  • What’s your greatest hope or fear for this November? Any ideas on how you’re going to manage your writing or that pesky real life stuff?
  • How did you choose your user name?
  • Anything else?

Hello my fellow Texans!

First of all, I don't live in Austin - but I'm just a hop, skip, and a jump away in San Marcos. I did NaNo for the first time last year... and failed miserably. But I didn't really have substantial support. I'm hoping if I can get plugged into a group of real live humans participating in the "literary abandon" then I might be more encouraged to keep trying.

My story: Last month I decided I definitely was going to try NaNo again and decided to draw my inspiration from this past year when I have worked as the part-time music director at my church. So my story is about the year my M.C. spends as a part-time music director at a church. My M.C. is not a characterization of me, though. As of a couple of weeks ago I had nothing and thought I might back out of NaNo. But then more plot ideas came to me and today I figured out two character names and some background info on each, the name of the church (although I'm not convinced... so it might change), and some snatches of conversation. No title yet though.

Word count goal is either 50k or anything higher than what I achieved last year.

I DO want to come to a write-in or party. Are San Marcosians allowed at Austin events?

My greatest fear for this November is just giving up like I did last year. I had stopped writing completely by halfway through November. This year, if nothing else, I at least want to be writing right up to the end of the month, whatever the word count. The real life stuff shouldn't conflict much this year - last year I was juggling a long-distance relationship and this year I am single. And my schedule is pretty wide open. Lots of time for writing.

This reply has been long enough, so I'll end it there. I need writing buddies - feel free to add me!

I think it's only fair to warn everyone that I'm officially throwing my hat into the ring for NaNoWriMo 2009.

This is my fifth year. I won my previous four attempts, 2004-2007. (I opted out of 2008, only to really really miss the madness -- and the groovy people.)

I have zero clues about what I might be writing, but I'm reasonably sure I'll be flying by the seat of my pen... as usual.

Goals... 50k. It's something I know I can do, so I won't spend the month trying to beat myself up about not doing more.

And yes... you WILL be seeing me in person. ;) (And yes, that's a threat.)

I think it should be interesting to try to juggle the November writing with events that I haven't really had going on in the past. I'm taking a vacation Thanksgiving week, and the person I'll be visiting has already told me she won't leave me any time for writing. (But I'll show her... yes I will.)

That's all for now. Rest assured, you'll be sick of me by the end of it... just like all those other years...

Love!

* Have you done NaNo before? Are you new to Austin, but not to NaNo?

This will be my 5th NaNo, and (hopefully) my 2nd win. Last year was my first NaNo in Austin, and I think the great group that we have really helped me to win last year.

* Do you know what you’re going to write? Have you picked a genre? A character? A title? Anything?

My novel is going to be a re-imagining of the four gospels - think Thelma and Louise meets the New Testament. Certainly blasphemous, and hopefully hilarious.

* What’s your word count goal - are you trying for 50,000? Setting your sights higher or a little lower?

I just want to hit 50k; anything extra will be great.

* Will we see you in person at a write-in or party? (Sure hope so! )

Yes! Probably can't make it to the October kickoff, but I'll definitely be at some write-ins and the end party.

* What’s your greatest hope or fear for this November? Any ideas on how you’re going to manage your writing or that pesky real life stuff?

I just worry that I won't be able to make 50k again this year. A little worried that lightning won't strike twice. But I don't care if I have to pull an all-nighter on November 30th! I'm determined! In terms of balance, it's a matter of fitting writing in whenever there is a spare moment - and sneaking in some clandestine noveling while at work helps!

* How did you choose your user name?

I chose this a loooong time ago. Orange is my favorite color, tango and paso doble are my favorite ballroom dances.

* Anything else

I have a shaved head this year, so all the NaNo-ers I met last year probably won't recognize me this time around.

I'm Jim Tarsi, and I'm back to NaNoWriMo after a two-year hiatus. (I was spending all my free time and some not-so-free time working toward my Master's degree.) I had done NaNoWriMo three years earlier, and have yet to win. November always seems to be an exceptionally busy month. This year will be no exception, but I have been thinking about all the time I have been wasting, and I am planning to hit 50,000!

My stories always gravitate toward tech-y stuff, not extreme science fiction, which I hope makes it more frightening because it is more plausible. This year, I plan on writing about a computer whiz who works for a 24-hour news channel managing the group that does the on-screen graphics. He comes across a sophisticated hacker with an unknown agenda who might end up destroying the whole idea of truth in journalism. (Not too ambitious, huh?)

Anyway, not sure if I will make it to any live writing sessions, although the write-a-thon at the Texas Book Festival sounds intriguing. I'll probably do most of my writing in the wee hours before I go to work.

Good luck to everyone!

I'm back for my 4th WriMo. I won my first WriMo back in 2006, but haven't had any luck since then. This year I'm writing something I haven't tried before - a steampunk/clockwork story with just a touch of the paranormal. I have plenty of coffee and homebrewed beer to get me through November, as well as someone who will refill my mug or glass for me when I'm writing so that I don't have to interrupt the word flow.

I'm purposely focusing on non-writing creative projects in October - and only doing bare-bones planning for my novel. I've managed to overplan one year and underplan another, so I'm trying to hit somewhere in the middle this year. The plan is for the novel to be between 80K and 100K.

I'll definitely be at some write-ins and at the Midnight Write. November is going to be an interesting month since I'm currently looking for an additional income source. If anything interferes with WriMo, that will be it.

Hey everyone! I'm Nessieblack09, which is a reference to the fourth book in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn. This is my first NaNoWriMo. I'm very excited, but I'm not entirely sure I'll make it to 50k. November is one of my busiest months. I have regular school work, and November is right at the peak of Basketball season as well as Drama rehearsals. I would really like to get a bigger part this year, so balancing everything should be interesting. But I will try to come to as many events as possible. I know one of the October events is on my birthday, so we'll see about that one. I've been trying to convince a couple friends to do it too, but they're having trouble seeing the merit in this whole thing.

I haven't done much planning yet. I think the most I'll do is have a basic plot and some very basic characters to start with. I've learned from past writing that my stories never stick to the plan. The last one I wrote, I spent several days stuck on one scene because I was stubbornly trying to stick to my plan. When I finally gave up and let the characters take more control, the story went in a completely different direction, and I introduced a character a whole chapter before I intended.

Hello!

-I have *attempted* NaNo before... this will be my sixth year of attempts... and while I have yet to succeed, this year I am determined! I am new to Austin; just moved here at the end of May. Newlywed, and all that. :)

-I have an idea as to what I want to do: a fantasy story. Main character is a farmer's wife turned soldier, title is Annika's War. Lots of zombies.

-I'd be happy with *anything* this year... but the big 50k is my main goal.

-We'll have to see... but I hope so too!

-Greatest fear? Not finishing. Greatest hope? Finishing! As for ideas... just plugging away daily, and making sure I make the daily minimum before I goof off.

-Username? Erm... well, I suppose I've been using it since high school. I'm not exactly in high school anymore, or college, but I still use the name.

-Hmm. I like dogs?

Happy writing!

Am I allowed to introduce myself even though I'm not in Austin anymore? WELL, I HOPE SO BECAUSE I'M DOING IT. Hahahaha!

1. I have done NaNo before. I am a five time NaNoWriMo participant and winner. Once, when I had no life to speak of, I wrote 150,000 words in November. Don't expect a repeat performance of THAT anytime soon. Or ever. ;)

2. Shockingly, I actually DO know what I'm writing this year. It's a young adult science fiction/paranormal post-apocalyptic (ish) vampire novel. Yep. There's more info on my profile if you REALLY want to know.

3. Wordcount goal is 50,000. I'm a grad student in writing for children and young adults, and I work, so I expect this year will be the toughest NaNo I've ever had. And YET I'm still going to try to make it. o_O

4. Mayyyyyyyyybe. *laughs mysteriously*

5. I'm afraid that this will be the year I lose. My plan is to play catchup on weekends, since there are days in the week now when I don't have time for SLEEP or FOOD, let alone writing.

6. Oh dear god. Okay. HERE IS THE THING about my username. Once upon a time, I had an idea for a story and I needed a name for the main character. So I pulled one out of my a--um, butt. And I started using it as my online alias. I was 15 at the time and didn't give too much thought to the idea that I MIGHT not want to be referred to as Breca Halley for the rest of my life. Unfortunately for 22-year-old me, high-school me liked her pen name well enough to use it when she first signed up for NaNoWriMo in 2004. And so here I am. But I do prefer you call me Rebecca IN REEL LYFE. :D

7. For the past four years, I have been NaNoing in Austin, TX with some of the best people EVER. But last January, I made the sudden decision to apply to grad school in New York City, and one thing led to another, and now I am in New York City. And I MISS YOU ALL. But hopefully it'll work out well here, too.

KTHXBAI!

Hello, Penguins! Yes, I'm back again. Alas, it looks very likely this will be my last NaNo in Austin, possibly in Texas at all. It all depends on what happens with work, and I likely won't know anything more detailed until at least February, so we'll see. In the meantime, I'll be around to provide an example to others of how NOT to succeed in NaNo, as usual.

I've been doing NaNo since 2003, so I've done it six times, and only hit the 50k mark twice. Still, I have a ton of fun, and I do generally manage to get at least a little writing done, which is more than I can say for myself for the other 11 months of the year!

To MusicalMe, I say this: "More than I wrote last year" is a perfectly acceptable goal! Myself, I managed about 5k my first year, before I gave up in disgust. When I came back for another try the next year, I set my goal at 10k, double the previous year--and I more than doubled it, if only by a little. I did the same the third year, and finally, in the fourth year, my goal was actually 50k. It came hard--very, very hard--but with the support and encouragement of my fellow Penguins, I made it! So, remember, we're here for you, we've all got stories to tell and we'll all be there to give you a swift kick or a pat on the back when you need it.

About me, I'm only half an Austinite. I work in Austin, but live in Bastrop. Well ... a bit outside the city of Bastrop, but close enough for the post office. My work hours have once again changed, and it's highly unlikely I will be able to make any events on Saturdays or Sundays. However, that means I'll be free to attend pretty much anything on Thursdays and Fridays (including the lockdown). I will also once again host a Wednesday morning write-in at the Green Muse. More details forthcoming.

I have, as usual, absolutely no idea what I might be writing this year. I am often encouraged to continue the adventures of Choke, Hack, Cough, Die and their little sister, Darlin', but so far this year, I have absolutely no feel for them. That may change by November, or I may try something else. Or I might implode, you never can tell. My goal, however, is to hit 50k again, to make last year the fluke instead of the two years previous. We shall have to see.

In the meantime, and mostly out of curiosity, are there any others in the Bastrop area here? Send me a NaNoMail!

Hi, I'm Karen and this is my first NaNo attempt. I'm actually in Kyle but I was living in Austin the last six years and I know how much fun you guys are. You don't mind me gate crashing do you? :)

I have a few story ideas being considered but there is one that's persistently nagging me so that one will probably be it. It's an action/adventure about a mercenary group. I have brief bios for the main characters and most of them are being pretty talkative so I have great hope for them. I have about a paragraph worth of outline which usually works best. Just follow the story where ever it wants to go. Titles usually turn up when they're good and ready to and not before.

My word count goal is 50,000. If I write more I will be shocked. Happy but shocked.

I'm hoping to make it to some of the events despite the distance and not having transportation. It will all depend on how the stars align on the day.

I'm not currently employed but need to be soon. I'm hoping to still have time outside of work (fingers crossed I find some) for plenty of writing. I'll also be in training for the Capitol 10K but that should help the ideas not hinder them. Other than that my friends and family are pretty good at leaving me alone when I'm writing.

My user name? Hahahaha, I'm saving all my creativity for November. :D

Hello Penguins!
I am back, the perrenial lost penguin pretending all the way from Virginia that I am still in the promised land of Texas. This is my fifth NaNo, third since leaving The Republic. But I will always call Austin my NaNo home, since y'all are the ones who got me hooked on NaNo in the first place.

My plan for this year is to have no plan. I will use a random plot generator from the SeventhSanctum.com at midnight (or just before) and go from there. Working title: Random.

Sorry, airfare from Virginia to Texas will effectively guarantee that I will not attend any events. I always dream however that my employer will suddenly discover an urgent need for me to travel to Texas during November and that I can then find an excuse to wander down to Austin for a few hours...

Glad to be back in New Antarctica, if not in person, at least in virtual person!

Hello!!
I live in Kyle and have been here since the beginning of this year when my company moved me here. I thought about participating last year, but was too stifled with the "I have 3 kids, a job and too much to do!!". Ok. I still have 3 kids, a job and too much to do, but I have decided to do it anyway!!! In fact, my 13 year old will be doing it too (he is more prepared than I am!!)

I have my story (its a fantasy tale), some names and a working title. I even have the first 1/3 planned out but I hit a blank wall after that. I need a planning session!!!!

I am shooting for a minimum of 50,000 and have decided this is probably book one of 3 or 4.

I plan to attend the parties/write-ins - husband has already been put on alert. The only thing that might stop me is that I have to have foot surgery this month...:(

My hope is that I make it to the end of my story - my fear is the end isn't 50,000 words!! I have converted my walk-in closet to a writing space, complete with an overstuffed chair and ottoman, my heirloom bookshelf, my dragon/elf/castle statues and my smell-good candles. I am putting a sign on the door that says "leave mommy alone for two hours". That's my plan and I am sticking to it!

My user name is also going to be my pen name if I should actually get published....Tabitha A. Miller is the name of my daughter, the first initial of my oldest son and the first name of my youngest son. My real name had no zing - Brandi Schonberg....blah.......

I am sooo excited!! My son and I are raising money and hope to get to go to San Francisco for the Night of Writing Dangerously!!! Can't wait ti meet everyone!

Brandi

Howdy all! Welcome new folks, and welcome back to Wrimos returning for another year. It's exciting to see familiar user names (and soon faces!) and to have our hatchlings posting too.

Just a quick reply to folks wondering if they can come to our events. Of course! People attend from Fredericksburg, Marble Falls, Salado, G'town, Pflugerville, San Marcos, Kyle, Bastrop, and even other Texas regions. We usually have a few NaNo visitors from out of state. As I've probably mentioned too much already, please do follow the age guidelines for different events. Many are for 13-and over, and for the all-nighter you have to be at least 18.

We'll have a carpool thread for folks to offer or request rides. I can't say that anyone is coming in from Kyle - but you never know!

All NaNo participants are welcome to post on our forum, as long as they don't get - um - TOO rowdy or lead us too astray. But we loves us our distractions, yes, yes, we do!

Have you done NaNo before? Are you new to Austin, but not to NaNo?
Well, I've done Nanowrimo last year and I got my 50k words in between school. I've lived in Austin all my life and it's a great place to live. :D

Do you know what you’re going to write? Have you picked a genre? A character? A title? Anything?
I'm writing fantasy although I'm not sure exactly what. I have a character and title picked out and a general vague plot idea, but that's about it.

What’s your word count goal - are you trying for 50,000? Setting your sights higher or a little lower?
I'm going for 100,000 this year, which means I have to write double the amount I wrote last year. XD. It's also going to be a lot harder juggling school with Nano but there's a quote that says the best way to get something done is to give it to a busy person.

Will we see you in person at a write-in or party? (Sure hope so! )
Probably not, unfortunately.

What’s your greatest hope or fear for this November? Any ideas on how you’re going to manage your writing or that pesky real life stuff?
My greatest fear is basically balancing my writing with school. I figure I'll write a little before school and after school and get my words in.

How did you choose your user name?
I chose something that I liked and sounded fantasyish. That was about my only criteria for selection however. XD

Anything else?
I'm probably one of the younger Nanoers in the forums but I still enjoy writing and don't believe that age is a barrier in writing. That being said, I'd appreciate getting to know everyone else and getting critique on my writing.

I'm Deanna and I'm back for my fifth consecutive NaNo. I've made the 50K mark every year, although this will be my most challenging year to try it, as my work load has increased substantially this holiday season.

I will be at all the Austin Java write ins and whatever other ones I can squeeze into my schedule.

For those of you who love NaNo and want to try writing a screenplay in a month in April, I am the Austin ML for ScriptFrenzy. Feel free to ask me about it if you see me (you can't miss the pink hair.)

Hi everyone! My name is Sam, and this will be my 3rd NaNo, and hopefully my 3rd win! I grew up in Austin, but moved out in 2004. I was a member of the Asheville, NC, region for 2006 and 2007 (it seems like there are a lot of people here who missed 2008!), but now I'm unemployed so I moved back in with my folks while I'm looking for a new job. I don't know how long I'll be in Austin...it's not that I don't love you, but it'd be nice to get a job--and I'm currently in the interview process for a job on a cruise ship! Woohoo! Which would throw some difficulties in my way with writing a novel, but I'm determined. I do plan to be at as many events as I'm here for.

Anyway, my novel is about six people on a boat that travels the world. That story is intercut with the funeral of one of them in the "present day" as the four surviving deckhands see each other again for the first time. I'm looking forward to writing it. This is the first time I've done a NaNo with mainstream fiction--I'm a recovering urban fantasy writer.

This will be my 4th year (3 previous wins). I am not sure why I am here this year. I have nothing planned. Well, almost nothing. I have a word. One measly little word. And I am expected to somehow coax it into 50k? I'm thinking of writing it on a post-it note, sticking it to my monitor and chanting "Be fruitful and multiply" several times a day. But will that work if I only have one word?

Maybe I can come up with a second word before the end of October and add it to the post-it. On the 31st, I'll light a few scented candles on my desk, download some Barry White and head out for trick-or-treating with the kid. When I come out of my sugar induced coma the next morning, with any luck, a miracle will have happened. The two words would have succumbed to the suggestions of the velvet voice and some resemblance of a story beginning will be on my screen.

Yeah, right. Need to come up with Plan B.

I'm in Cedar Park and my screen name is simply the same one I use for another board (you have to use real names there). I keep things simple for my simple brain.

I too am in San Marcos and this is my first shot at this. I've got a few other friends who were doing it so I decided to jump off the bridge with them. :D

this will be my 7th atttempt (only won once, my first time, in 2002, only had complete and utter failures ever since). i'm looking forward to seeing how far i get this time. i'm going to be doing a novelization of a comic i want to make, so it might not be that hard, since i have everything scripted/outlined/summarized. i'm also not going to take this venture seriously and will be ignoring all of the classic novel writing rules (such as don't use exposition and show not tell).

Have you done NaNo before? Are you new to Austin, but not to NaNo?

This is my seventh year doing NaNo...and hopefully, my seventh win. I'm a native Austinite and one of the guys organizing the Midnight Write. Admittedly, I'm organizing it on the Dragon's Lair end of things. (It was the 2007 Midnight Write that landed me the job there...right when I really needed one.)

Do you know what you’re going to write? Have you picked a genre? A character? A title? Anything?

I'm writing a prequel to a story I've been noodling for a fair few years now. I needed to untangle the backstory - so what better way than to sit down and write it as a story? I'm pretty excited about this, because although I know a few things that have to happen, letting Katheryn's background develop organically, through writing (and writing I'm not forcing myself to keep serious) promises to create some interesting developments.

The genre is firmly space opera, but I don't have a title yet.

What’s your word count goal - are you trying for 50,000? Setting your sights higher or a little lower?

I always aim higher than 50K, but I almost never give myself a number to reach beyond that. One year, unemployed and not really looking for a job, I broke 100K, but I don't see that happening again.

Though, it'd be a helluva lotta fun to try.

Will we see you in person at a write-in or party? (Sure hope so! )

Well, I'll be there at the Midnight Write for sure! But every year, I make all kinds of grand plans to hit write-ins and events, and I never quite seem to make it. I hope to break that pattern this year and make it to several events. Every time I have made it, it's been a lot of fun!

What’s your greatest hope or fear for this November? Any ideas on how you’re going to manage your writing or that pesky real life stuff?

My greatest hope is to break 100K. My greatest fear...is to fail because of my fibromyalgia. My fatigue is worse than it ever has been, and I'm not making much progress in getting it under control. I have no idea how much of a problem it will be in November, but I will admit it's a bit intimidating to think about writing 2000 words (or thereabouts) a day while dealing with this.

How did you choose your user name?

My user name was just a word that sounded cool in my head and it's stuck with me for a decade. It's what I go by almost everywhere on the interwebs, and has kinda become part of my identity.

Anything else?

This is going to be my first NaNo with my netbook - which means, my first NaNo with a portable computer with more than 20 minutes of battery! I'm looking forward to the increased mobility...I have to wonder if that's going to help or hurt my word count.

* Have you done NaNo before? Are you new to Austin, but not to NaNo?
I did nano in 05 and failed, did it in 06 and 07 and won, and then in 08 I had a bad case of Undergraduate Thesis which I wrote instead of doing Nano. And now I'm back!!!

* Do you know what you’re going to write? Have you picked a genre? A character? A title? Anything?
I HAVE DECIDED NOTHING

* What’s your word count goal - are you trying for 50,000? Setting your sights higher or a little lower?
I 'm happy with 50,000

* Will we see you in person at a write-in or party? (Sure hope so! )
I'll be at the midnight kickoff party!!!

* What’s your greatest hope or fear for this November? Any ideas on how you’re going to manage your writing or that pesky real life stuff?
Now that I've graduated from college, I am TOTALLY EXCITED about having so much free time with which to be forced to write! (So far since graduating I've been watching about a season of a television show every other week. That's a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Office, Arrested Development, etc., yo!)

* How did you choose your user name?
It's the dorkiest thing ever. The first character I ever made for my Harry Potter Online Role Playing Game (Yes, go ahead, laugh!) was named Morgan Madding, and I've been using that a my internet alias ever since. (That'd be seven or so years. Yes, I still play that same character on that same site.)

* Anything else?
I have a bachelor's degree in writing!!!!!!!!!! I just earned it, so I'm proud.

Yes, 7 times, won 6 of those times. Have lived in the Austin area for 17 years.

* Do you know what you’re going to write? Have you picked a genre? A character? A title? Anything?
Haven't quite decided what I'm going to write, but I've been doing a trilogy - series (this year will be #4) off and on since 2004, so I'm tempted to go back to that, but I'm going to give new ideas a chance to bloom before I decide. I have ideas for where the series can go, so it's tempting just to fall back on that.... If I do that, I will probably aim for at least 60K because writing may go faster since I know the characters so well.

* What’s your word count goal - are you trying for 50,000? Setting your sights higher or a little lower?
At least 55-60 if I do the series. I got to 65K last year. Probably at least 55K if I do a new project.

* Will we see you in person at a write-in or party? (Sure hope so! )
I hope so. I at least want to try to get to the planning session at the Pflugerville Library and a couple of north end things. (Maybe even make another appearance at pie party, if there is one....)

* What’s your greatest hope or fear for this November? Any ideas on how you’re going to manage your writing or that pesky real life stuff?
I have an extremely supportive husband who understands that this is what I do every November. My "BFF" from grade school (doesn't live in Austin) is attempting her first NaNo this year, so I'm going to cheer her on!

* How did you choose your user name?
I was born in the Midwest United States in November. I used the name originally as part of a MUD/RPG in college.

* Anything else?
My birthday is in November! : )
